CONSORT 2025 statement: updated guideline for reporting randomized trials: a Korean translation
Measurement of purpose in life among Arabic-speaking adolescents: psychometric properties of an Arabic-language version of the Claremont purpose scale (CPS)
Background: Purpose in life is considered a protective factor related to one's ability to thrive, supporting positive development and overall psychological wellbeing of the adolescent. The main goal of our study is to adapt and validate the Claremont purpose scale (CPS) into the Arabic language, expanding its applicability to Arabic-speaking contexts. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study was collected via a Google Form link during November 2023. Lebanese adolescents aged 14 to 18 years (N = 793, 62.4% females, mean age of 16.08 ± 1.74 years) were recruited using an online questionnaire and a snowball sampling technique. Results: The fit of the three-factor structure of CPS scores was satisfactory as indicated by the Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Internal reliability was excellent (α = 0.86; ω = 0.87). Measurement invariance across sex groups was established at the metric, configural, and scalar levels. There was no significant difference between male and female respondents in terms of CPS scores. Finally, CPS total scores were significantly correlated with greater depression-happiness (r = 0.43; p < 0.001), higher wellbeing (r = 0.51; p < 0.001), and lower irritability (r = –.66; p < 0.001), attesting to concurrent validity. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the CPS in its Arabic version is a valid and reliable measure allowing to detect the sense of purpose in Arabic-speaking adolescents, at least from Lebanon. The new validated scale has potential for future practitioners and researchers who would ought to work on ways of improving the psychological functioning of adolescents drawn from an Arab culture
A neuroeconomic theory of obsessive-compulsive disorder
While there are many studies on the neural bases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there is a dire need for a neurocomputational framework to explain its symptoms. To this end, we use the Expected Value of Control (EVC) theory to conceptualize the information processing deficits underlying OCD. Specifically, we argue that when experiencing obsessions, weak cognitive control is favored due to the affective cost of disregarding anxiety-provoking obsessions (akin to ignoring a fire alarm). This affective cost leads to the overvaluation of the cost of cognitive control (deeming it expensive), favoring automatic responses in the form of compulsions. We also exercise other ways by which OCD symptoms can be explained within the same theoretical framework. We ground our EVC-based neuroeconomic account in different neural systems implicated in OCD, including the orbitofrontal cortex, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and basal ganglia, which refer to different EVC constituents. Finally, we argue that input from the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis to dACC introduces the key affective cost information to the estimation of EVC.</p
How self-construal and ad appeal shape the evaluation of sustainable luxury products: the interplay of self, pride, and gratitude
PurposeThis study investigates the interplay among self-construal, ad appeals, environmental concern and consumer evaluations of sustainable luxury products. It examines how pride (aligned with independent self-construal) and gratitude (aligned with interdependent self-construal) influence consumer evaluations, with a specific focus on the moderating role of environmental concern.Design/methodology/approachThis research includes two experimental studies. Study 1 (N = 316) used a 2 × 2 design to examine the interaction between ad appeal (pride vs gratitude) and self-construal (independent vs interdependent) on sustainable luxury product evaluations through processing fluency. Study 2 (N = 552) employed a 2 × 2 × 2 design to explore the moderating role of environmental concern (low vs high) in the relationship between the interaction of ad appeal and self-construal on sustainable luxury product evaluations.FindingsThe findings reveal that ad appeals aligned with consumers’ self-construal enhance processing fluency, leading to more favorable evaluations of sustainable luxury products. This effect is amplified when environmental concern is high but attenuated when environmental concern is low.Originality/valueThis research highlights the importance of tailoring advertising messages to consumers’ self-construal and accounting for their environmental concern. These insights are valuable for marketers aiming to enhance advertising strategies for sustainable luxury products
Social networks and communities of practice during study abroad: affordances for quality interactions
This study explored the social networks and communities of practice experienced by six Japanese university students on a short-term English language learning study abroad sojourn in Australia. Our aim was to understand the student-appraised quality of the interactions afforded by these networks and communities and to uncover the criteria underpinning their appraisals
Navigating Life-Course Transitions Through Tourism: A Dual Pathway Framework of Senior Wellbeing and Resilience
Seniors are particularly susceptible to mental health challenges when navigating life-course transitions, such as retirement or bereavement. Despite this, the potential of tourism to build resilience and enhance the wellbeing of seniors remains underexplored and conceptually underdeveloped. Drawing on positive psychology, this research critically examines how wellbeing derived from tourism contributes to seniors’ resilience against life-course adversities. Implementing a sequential two-phased research design combining biographical interviews with focus groups, guided by autobiographical sketches, this research unveils the compensatory and protective pathways through which each dimension of senior tourists’ wellbeing aids them in navigating life-course transitions. The manuscript proposes a dual pathway framework of senior tourist wellbeing and resilience. Complementing this, the manuscript innovates by presenting tourism-based interventions designed to enhance seniors’ resilience, aligning with the global healthy aging agenda purported by the United Nations. Future research should examine how tourism-based interventions mitigate the adverse impacts of navigating life-course adversities

Omnivore, vegan and vegetarian diet quality associations with depressive symptoms: A comparative cross-sectional analysis of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health
Background:Depressive symptoms are experienced by >350 million people globally. Research suggests that a diet rich in plant foods could be protective against depressive symptoms, but vegans and vegetarians who eat a predominant plant-based diet are known to have higher depressive symptoms than omnivores. Methods:This study aims to explore a secondary analysis of the association between diet quality and depressive symptoms in women born between 1973 and 1978 who follow vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore diets from the Australian Longitudinal Study of Women's Health at baseline (1996) and at three time points (2000, 2003 and 2009).Results:After controlling for covarying factors, there was a significant association between diet quality and depressive symptoms in both the plant-based and omnivore groups at both time points F(9, 4851) = 106.90, p < .001. There was no significant difference between diet quality and depressive symptoms between diet type. Conclusions:Despite diet type (plant-based or omnivore), adhering to a high-quality diet may decrease depressive symptoms and a low-quality diet may increase depressive symptoms in Australian women.Limitations:Caution should be exercised when interpreting these results due to the small sample sizes and small resulting coefficients, there is uncertainty that coefficients this small can be associated with any meaningful change in an individual being treated for depressive symptoms in a clinical setting
Pre-cut construction systems: John Dalton’s ‘budget houses’ in Queensland
Commissioned by Reverand John and Maureen Strugnell to design their home in Pullenvale, Brisbane, John Dalton Architect elected to use the Lockwood system, a proprietary engineered building system by the New Zealand based Lockwood Group, utilizing Western Red Cedar imported from Canada. How did the Lockwood system, designed in 1953 by émigré Dutchman Johannes La Grouw for New Zealand conditions, became a viable option in sub-tropical Brisbane, Australia, a region with its own timber framing tradition derived ironically from a discontinued pre-cut house system? This paper describes a set of market forces – freer trade settings between New Zealand and Australia harnessed by a timber industry forced to re-structure by an inflationary business climate – and their intersection with local debate around an authentic modernism. By selecting Western Red Cedar in the context of this debate Dalton knowingly aligned himself with the work of West Coast Regionalist architects and maybe Auckland based Group Architects. Shared is an expression of tongue and groove boards. Intrinsic to pre-cut timber house systems, tongue and groove boards result from the mechanization of log cabin construction, and it is that most humble of settler structures that becomes an aesthetic reference. Discussion around Dalton’s Strugnell House (1971), and the earlier Salter House (1970) for Lockwood Systems’ Brisbane franchise owner Peter Salter, provides an opportunity to trace through timber supply networks in Australian and New Zealand to describe how a material sourced in Canada and incorporated into a proprietary system delivered ‘authentic’ and environmentally tuned modernist homes in Brisbane
