Information Aggregation in Markets with Analysts, Experts, and Chatbots
The present paper shows that it can be advantageous for traders to publish their information on the true value of an asset even if they (i) cannot build a position in the asset prior to the publication of their information and (ii) cannot charge for the provision of information. The model also shows that the informational content of prices is U-shaped in the number of traders who publish their information. Put differently, information aggregation works best if either no trader, or if every trader publishes his information. Small groups of distinguished experts are, on the contrary, an obstacle to information aggregation. The model\u27s key assumption is that the perception/interpretation of a given piece of published information differs slightly across traders.10 pages, no figure
On the Quantum Theory of Molecules: Rigour, Idealization, and Uncertainty
Philosophers have claimed that: (a) the Born-Oppenheimer approximation methods for solving molecular Schrödinger equations violate the Heisenberg uncertainty relations; therefore (b) so-called `quantum chemistry\u27 is not fully quantum; and so (c) chemistry does not reduce to physics. This paper analyses the reasoning behind Born-Oppenheimer methods and shows that they are internally consistent and fully quantum mechanical, contrary to (a)-(c). Our analysis addresses important issues of mathematical rigour, physical idealisation, reduction, and classicality in the quantum theory of molecules, and we propose an agenda for the philosophy of quantum chemistry more solidly grounded in scientific practice
Tailoring Charge Donor-Acceptor Interaction in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals through Ligand Exchange
The surface ligands in colloidal metal halide perovskites influence not only their intrinsic optoelectronic properties but also their interaction with other materials and molecules. We explore donor-acceptor interactions of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals with TiO2 nanoparticles and nanotubes by replacing long-chain oleylamine ligands with short-chain butylamines. Through post-synthesis ligand exchange, we functionalize the nanocrystals with butylamine ligands while maintaining their intrinsic properties. In solution, butylamine-capped nanocrystals exhibit reduced photoluminescence intensity with increasing TiO2 concentration but without any change in photoluminescence lifetime. Intriguingly, the Stern-Volmer plot depicts different slopes at low and high TiO2 concentrations, suggesting mixed static and sphere-of-action quenching interactions. Oleylamine-capped nanocrystals in solution, on the other hand, show no interaction with TiO2, as indicated by consistent photoluminescence intensities and lifetimes before and after TiO2 addition. In films, both types exhibit decreased photoluminescence lifetime with TiO2, indicating enhanced donor-acceptor interactions, which are discussed in terms of trap state modification and electron transfer. TiO2 nanotubes enhance nonradiative recombination more in butylamine-capped CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals, emphasizing the role of ligand chain length.30 pages, 7 figure
Colloidal quasi-2D Methylammonium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanostructures with Tunable Shape and High Chemical Stability
Control over the lateral dimensions of colloidal nanostructures is a complex task which requires a deep understanding of the formation mechanism and reactivity in the corresponding systems. As a result, it provides a well-founded insight to the physical and chemical properties of these materials. In this work, we demonstrate the preparation of quasi-2D methylammonium lead bromide nanostripes and discuss the influence of some specific parameters on the morphology and stability of this material. The variation in the amount of the main ligand dodecylamine gives a large range of structures beginning with 3D brick-like particles at low concentrations, nanostripes at elevated and ultimately nanosheets at large concentrations. The amount of the co-ligand trioctylphosphine can alter the width of the nanostripe shape to a certain degree. The thickness can be adjusted by the amount of the second precursor methylammonium bromide. Additionally, insights are given for the suggested formation mechanism of these anisotropic structures as well as for stability against moisture at ambient conditions in comparison with differently synthesized nanosheet samples.18 pages, 5 figure
Global weak solutions with higher regularity to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations under Dirichlet boundary conditions
In this manuscript, we aim to establish global existence of weak solutions with higher regularity to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations under no-slip boundary conditions. Though Lions\cite{L1} and Feireisl\cite{F1} have established global weak solutions with finite energy under Dirichelet boundary conditions by making use of so called effective viscous flux and oscillation defect measure,Hoff has investigated global weak solutions with higher regularity in \cite{H1,Hof2} when the domain is either whole space or half space with Navier-slip boundary conditions, yet the existence theory of global weak solution with higher regularity under Dirichlet boundary conditions remains unknown. In this paper we prove that the system will admit at least one global weak solutions with higher regularity as long as the initial energy is suitably small when the domain is a 2D solid disc. This is achieved by exploiting the structure of the exact Green function of the disc to decompose the effective viscous flux into three parts, which corresponds to the pressure term, boundary term and the remaining term respectively. In order to control the boundary term, one of the key observations is to use the geometry of the domain which sucessfully to bound the integral of the effective viscous flux where norm is always unbounded.30 page
Optimal Classification under Performative Distribution Shift
Performative learning addresses the increasingly pervasive situations in which algorithmic decisions may induce changes in the data distribution as a consequence of their public deployment. We propose a novel view in which these performative effects are modelled as push-forward measures. This general framework encompasses existing models and enables novel performative gradient estimation methods, leading to more efficient and scalable learning strategies. For distribution shifts, unlike previous models which require full specification of the data distribution, we only assume knowledge of the shift operator that represents the performative changes. This approach can also be integrated into various change-of-variablebased models, such as VAEs or normalizing flows. Focusing on classification with a linear-in-parameters performative effect, we prove the convexity of the performative risk under a new set of assumptions. Notably, we do not limit the strength of performative effects but rather their direction, requiring only that classification becomes harder when deploying more accurate models. In this case, we also establish a connection with adversarially robust classification by reformulating the minimization of the performative risk as a min-max variational problem. Finally, we illustrate our approach on synthetic and real datasets.38th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems, Dec 2024, Vancouver (Canada), Canad
Explainable cognitive decline detection in free dialogues with a Machine Learning approach based on pre-trained Large Language Models
Cognitive and neurological impairments are very common, but only a small proportion of affected individuals are diagnosed and treated, partly because of the high costs associated with frequent screening. Detecting pre-illness stages and analyzing the progression of neurological disorders through effective and efficient intelligent systems can be beneficial for timely diagnosis and early intervention. We propose using Large Language Models to extract features from free dialogues to detect cognitive decline. These features comprise high-level reasoning content-independent features (such as comprehension, decreased awareness, increased distraction, and memory problems). Our solution comprises (i) preprocessing, (ii) feature engineering via Natural Language Processing techniques and prompt engineering, (iii) feature analysis and selection to optimize performance, and (iv) classification, supported by automatic explainability. We also explore how to improve Chatgpt\u27s direct cognitive impairment prediction capabilities using the best features in our models. Evaluation metrics obtained endorse the effectiveness of a mixed approach combining feature extraction with Chatgpt and a specialized Machine Learning model to detect cognitive decline within free-form conversational dialogues with older adults. Ultimately, our work may facilitate the development of an inexpensive, non-invasive, and rapid means of detecting and explaining cognitive decline
Hafnia-based Phase-Change Ferroelectric Steep-Switching FETs on a 2-D MoS platform
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors integrated on 2D semiconducting platforms are extremely relevant for low power electronics. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel phase-change ferroelectric field effect transistor (PCFE-FET) for steep switching applications. Our gate stack is engineered as a ferroelectric Lanthanum doped hafnium oxide (LHO) proximity coupled with Mott insulator TiO(N) and is integrated onto a 2D MoS channel. The interplay of partial polarization switching in the ferroelectric LHO layer and reversible field-tunable metal-insulator transition (MIT) in TiO(N) layer concomitantly triggers polar to non-polar phase transition in the LHO layer between 200 and 220 K. This results in distinctive step-like features in the channel current during DC measurements, and random current fluctuations in high-speed measurements with slim anticlockwise hysteresis. Our devices show subthreshold slopes as steep as 25 mV/dec at 210 K, breaking the Boltzmann limit. Our gate stack is also potentially tunable for operation at temperatures of interest, presenting innovative gate stack engineering approaches for low-power computing solutions
Scalable Efficient Training of Large Language Models with Low-dimensional Projected Attention
Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of large language models (LLMs) simultaneously is a critical yet challenging research goal. In this paper, we find that low-rank pre-training, normally considered as efficient methods that will compromise performance, can be scalably effective when reduced parameters are precisely targeted. Specifically, applying the low-dimensional module only to the attention layer -- resolves this issue and enhances both effectiveness and efficiency. We refer to this structure as Low-dimensional Projected Attention (LPA) and provide an explanatory analysis. Through extensive experimentation at parameter scales of 130M, 370M, and scaling up to 3B, we have validated the effectiveness and scalability of LPA. Our results show that LPA model can save up to 12.4% in time while achieving an approximate 5% improvement in test perplexity (ppl) and on downstream tasks compared with the vanilla Transformer.Accepted to EMNLP 2024 (Main Conference
Real-time and Downtime-tolerant Fault Diagnosis for Railway Turnout Machines (RTMs) Empowered with Cloud-Edge Pipeline Parallelism
Railway Turnout Machines (RTMs) are mission-critical components of the railway transportation infrastructure, responsible for directing trains onto desired tracks. For safety assurance applications, especially in early-warning scenarios, RTM faults are expected to be detected as early as possible on a continuous 7x24 basis. However, limited emphasis has been placed on distributed model inference frameworks that can meet the inference latency and reliability requirements of such mission critical fault diagnosis systems. In this paper, an edge-cloud collaborative early-warning system is proposed to enable real-time and downtime-tolerant fault diagnosis of RTMs, providing a new paradigm for the deployment of models in safety-critical scenarios. Firstly, a modular fault diagnosis model is designed specifically for distributed deployment, which utilizes a hierarchical architecture consisting of the prior knowledge module, subordinate classifiers, and a fusion layer for enhanced accuracy and parallelism. Then, a cloud-edge collaborative framework leveraging pipeline parallelism, namely CEC-PA, is developed to minimize the overhead resulting from distributed task execution and context exchange by strategically partitioning and offloading model components across cloud and edge. Additionally, an election consensus mechanism is implemented within CEC-PA to ensure system robustness during coordinator node downtime. Comparative experiments and ablation studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed fault diagnosis approach. Our ensemble-based fault diagnosis model achieves a remarkable 97.4% accuracy on a real-world dataset collected by Nanjing Metro in Jiangsu Province, China. Meanwhile, CEC-PA demonstrates superior recovery proficiency during node disruptions and speed-up ranging from 1.98x to 7.93x in total inference time compared to its counterparts
