STREAMING
Sculpture by Christy Rupp
Understood as one of the early pioneers in the field of ecological art activism, the artist,
activist and thought-leader Christy Rupp (American, b. 1949) has an international
reputation. Streaming features a survey of Rupp’s wall installations and free-standing
sculpture, which chronicle the ongoing tension between natural systems and the
environment in transition, and call our attention to our interconnectedness with non-
humans and habitat – transmuting detritus gathered from the waste stream through
sculpture to reveal what is hidden away from common view and understanding.
Informed by science and the historical representation of natural history, the artwork in
this exhibition examines the way we frame our opinions of nature, using irony and wit to
represent the human impact on our natural habitat.

Considerada una de las precursoras del activismo artístico ecológico, la artista, activista
y líder intelectual Christy Rupp (estadounidense, nacida en 1949) goza de una
reputación internacional. En movimiento presenta una selección de los detallados
collages, las instalaciones de pared y las esculturas independientes de la artista que
describen la tensión actual entre los sistemas naturales y los cambios en el medio
ambiente. Rupp nos hará reflexionar sobre nuestra conexión con los seres no humanos
y el hábitat mediante la transformación de desperdicios procedentes de la basura en
collages y esculturas que revelan lo que escapa a la vista y a la comprensión general.
Las obras de arte de esta exposición, basadas en la ciencia y en la representación
histórica de la historia natural, examinan nuestra concepción de la naturaleza,
recurriendo a la ironía y al ingenio para representar el impacto del ser humano en
nuestro hábitat natural.

Plankton, tiny organisms that drift with the 
ocean currents, are a vital part of marine food 
webs, constituting the principal diet of marine 
life including whales, but their existence – and 
that of the many fish and aquatic animals that 
feed upon them – are threatened by many 
factors including warming temperatures,  
acidification, ocean dumping, microplastics, 
and algal blooms, to name a few.
The series title Petroplankton plays on 
phytoplankton (the photosynthesizing algae 
that form the first step in the marine food 
chain), with a reference to the petroleum- 
based origins of these plastic components.
How many single-use plastics can you identify 
inside these sculptures? Plastic pollution is a 
major disruptor of ocean environments, making 
up an estimated 80% of all marine waste.
