Exploring the Motivations and Challenges in Student Instrumental Engagement: A Study in Initiation, Persistence, and Attrition
No full textThis dissertation investigates the factors influencing student participation in instrumental music programs within the Northeast Coastal Public Schools (NCPS). The study addresses gaps in existing research by examining the motivations and challenges associated with students’ initiation, persistence, and attrition of instrumental music education, particularly during the transitional periods between elementary and middle school, and middle and high school. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through surveys of current and former students and parents alongside focus group discussions.The study finds that initial engagement in instrumental music is largely driven by personal interest, familial encouragement, and a desire to explore music. Long term participation is closely linked to parental support and positive student-teacher relationships. However, challenges contributing to attrition include competition from other extracurricular activities, the requirements to choose between instrumental music and other programs (such as chorus) in middle school, inconsistent elementary lesson schedules, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Issues of equity and access to instruments was also raised as a concern.The dissertation highlights the need for improved communication between teachers and parents, a reassessment of the elementary instrumental program structure, and strategies that allow students to engage in multiple musical pursuits. Despite limitations in sample size and demographic diversity, the findings provide important insights for NCPS and similar districts to enhance student retention in instrumental music programs. The research offers recommendations to foster a more inclusive, supportive environment, with the goal of ensuring more students have access to the benefits of instrumental music education
