No full textThis is a wooden statue of a Kayan woman practicing the tradition of wearing brass neck rings. This practice gives the illusion that they are stretching their necks, giving rise to the slang term giraffe women. However, the neck is not stretched but rather the weight of the brass rings (reaching over 20 pounds) push down on the wearer’s collarbone collapsing it and eventually forcing the ribs and the clavicle to descend about 45 degrees. this is what gives the appearance of a stretched neck.
