Nutrient content of fresh and nutrient retention in cooked Solanum nigrum Linn. leaves and green berries
At present, the demand for nutraceuticals in lifestyle diseases is increasing due to its low side effects. Many of the vegetables which we include in the diet itself possess nutraceutical properties besides its culinary purposes. Many such plants are still unfamiliar to the common man due to lack of awareness about their therapeutic potentials. Solanum nigrum Linn. is a plant which belongs to the family Solanacea and possess nutraceutical properties. Nutrient retention of vegetables subjected to different cooking methods varies. The present study aimed to analyse the nutrient content and estimate the percentage of nutrient retention in Solanum nigrum Linn. leaves and green berries subjected to different cooking methods. Fresh leaves and green berries were harvested from the green house in which cultivation was done and were cooked by boiling, pressure cooking, steaming, sautéing and microwave. Nutrients in both fresh and cooked leaves and berries were analyzed using standard procedures using Millipore water. The percentage of nutrient retention in each cooked sample was calculated using USDA true retention formula. Findings revealed that among the cooked leaves, the steamed leaves possessed more carbohydrates and proteins while in case of green berries, more crude fibre and carbohydrates was seen. Besides these, a significant amount of iron, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin C contents were present in steamed leaves and green berries when compared with other cooking methods. Similar results were observed in case of percentage of nutrient retention also. From the results, it can be concluded that, steaming is the best method of cooking to retain more nutrients in Solanum nigrum Linn. leaves and green berries. Since the fresh leaves and green berries is normally not consumed by humans, steaming may be considered as the best method for human consumption to avail the maximum nutritional and therapeutic benefits of the leaves and green berries
Anti- hyperglycemic activity of polyherbal formulation (Herbinsulplus) in experimental diabetes and its effects on key metabolic enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not produce or properly utilize insulin, causes disturbances in carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism. In spite of the presence of series of known anti-diabetic medicine in the pharmaceutical market, remedies from medicinal plants are used with success to treat this disease. The investigation was undertaken to study the effect of polyherbal formulation on changes in Body weight, Plasma glucose, RBC, WBC, HB, Platelets, Hepatic glucokinase & hexokinase, Glucose-6-phosphate and Glycogen content. In the current study, diabetes mellitus was induced by alloxan monohydrate at a dose of 150 mg/kg i.p to rats. A significant increase was observed in plasma glucose level in alloxan induced diabetic rats, whereas treatment with Glipizide (10mg/kg), polyherbal formulation (herbinsulplus) at two different doses (120mg/kg and 240mg/kg) showed significant antihyperglycemic activity in mild hyperglycemia. The administration of polyherbal formulation (herbinsulplus) at two doses showed an increase in body weight in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Treatment with polyherbal formulation (herbinsul plus) at two doses prevented this alteration in glycogen content of liver tissue, but could not normalize the content of glycogen of the non-diabetic control. The groups treated with polyherbal formulation (herbinsul plus) (120mg/kg and 240mg/kg) and Glipizide (10mg/kg) showed greater persistence of islets of Langerhans and lesser degree of necrotic changes as compared to the untreated alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In conclusion, HerbinsulPlus exhibited significant anti-hyperglycemic activity in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats and showed improvement in carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes as well as regeneration of β-cells of pancreas and so might be of value in diabetes treatment
Theoretical estimate of the probability for macromole formation
We estimate the polymerization probability of a macromolecule, where the macromolecule is made of distinct monomers; and there are different values of the fugacity for the addition of the monomers in the chain to form an infinitely long linear macromolecule of distinct monomers. The lattice model of the random walk has been used to mimic the conformations of an ideal chain in two and three dimensions, and this ideal chain is the macromolecules of distinct monomers. It has been shown through analytical estimates that the flexible macromolecules may be easily formed than the stiff macromolecules for both two and three dimensional cases. In the case of stiff chain, the ratio of the critical value of monomer fugacity is nothing but the log-log ratio of the Boltzmann’s weight corresponding to the monomers affinity corresponding to its conjugate monomer pair; and it is due to a fact that the stiff chain has small value of the entropy
A Study on organoleptic evaluation and acceptability of traditional tribal therapeutic recipes of Assam for gastro intestinal disorders.
Assam, a state with a blend of culture, heritage, faith and belief of numerous ethnic tribes with a distinct food culture has once been a cradle of therapeutic cuisines. Urbanization and westernization has resulted in a drastic shift of eating habits of people of Assam leading to spare usage of recipes that have potential therapeutic values .Reintroducing the forgotten therapeutic recipes into the tribal communities of Assam is the need of the day. A total of 50 tribal women (purposive sampling) above the age group of 60 years from Sadiya in Assam were interviewed to collect the original traditional therapeutic recipes of Assam. A total of 120 traditional therapeutic tribal recipes were collected ,documented and classified for 13 different disease conditions namely Gastrointestinal diseases(43), Degenerative diseases(15), Infectious diseases(21), Respiratory diseases(14), Liver disease(8), Renal disorder(3), Cardiovascular Disease(3), Reproductive problems(5), Nutritional deficiency(20), Sleeping disorder(2), Vision problem(2), Blood toxicity(2) and Others (1). The classified recipes were standardized and tested for its organoleptic qualities by a semi trained panel of 10 members using a 9 point hedonic scale and it was found to be acceptable for all sensory characteristic indicating the grater scope of its consumption by a different population across the nation for therapeutic uses
Study On the nutrient analysis of flaxseeds and its effect on glycemic response
The consequences of having raised blood glucose levels have exhibited profound challenges in the health outcome of millions worldwide. Although there is an intense physiological impact of diabetes, it presents an elevated risk to a myriad of comorbidities like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome etc. Incorporation of dietary components high in fibre, antioxidants and functional foods can help improve glycemic responses. Flax seeds are high in fibre, polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), alpha linoleic acid, flavones, minerals like phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. The present study attempts to evaluate the effect of flaxseed incorporated recipe on the glycemic responses of subjects with elevated blood sugar levels. The study also comprises an analysis of the mineral and fibre content of flax seeds available in the local supplies
Influence of substrate temperature on structure, morphology and optical properties of spray deposited ZnO thin films
In present article ZnO thin films were deposited for five different substrate temperatures (150-350 oC) using simple spray technique. The deposited films have been characterized using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopy and effect of substrate temperature on structure, morphology, and optical properties have been studied. Crystallite size was estimated from using Lorentz Fit of XRD data. The crystallite size was in the 20 to 26.32 nm range. The SEM of (ZnO 300 ) film sample shows whole surface was uniformly coated with schematically arranged network of ZnO wires of average diameter 566 nm. Purity of the deposited sample was investigated by using Energ Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX). All the ZnO films exhibit 70 to 80% transmittance and 3.23 to 3.26 eV optical band gap.

Euphorbia Nivulia is thorny, xerophytic, succulent plant belong to spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Ultrasonic studies provide valuable information about the nature of molecular interaction in binary or ternary liquid mixture. For these purpose Ultrasonic velocity, density, viscosity measured for pure liquid and its mixture with leaves extract of Euphorbia Nivulia. The acoustic parameter have been calculated from experimental data to analyse certain physiochemical properties of plant extract
Mixtures of Normal Distributions: Application to Diving Suit Fitting
In this paper, a mixture of normal distributions is performed to analyze the characteristics of population data in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to accommodate the diving suits fitting for consumers. It is not easy to collect consumers’ data since it takes time and effort as well as cost a lot. For such a business, the order quantity is financially critical because diving suits sizes are different from a location to another, which based on population data. In fact, the business cannot rely on one factor, whether the weight or height of the consumer to find the best fit size, both are needed. Thus, a random sample represents the whole population of the city of Jeddah with acceptable error is generated. Then a mixture distribution was applied for the generated data of all factors (weight & height) to solved the issues and improved the order quantity to serve the consumers better as well as minimize cost and increase the profit of the business
Biogenic synthesis of gold nanoparticles using Haematocarpus validus fruit ethanol extract and their antioxidant activity
In order to obtain environmentally friendly nanoparticles for the biological applications, this paper explores the green route for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles via sonic bath method using Haematocarpus validus fruit extract as reducing, capping and stabilizing agent. The phytochemical screening of ethanol extract reveals secondary metabolites like anthocyanins, polyphenol, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins. The prepared gold nanoparticles (HVGNP) were analysed using UV, FTIR, XRD, EDX and FESEM spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity of synthesized HVGNP measured by the DPPH method reveals the synthesized gold nanoparticles appreciable antioxidant activity
Impact of spider mite feeding on vegetable crops
Agriculture plays an important role to determine the economy of Kerala. Being primarily an agriculturalstate, contribution of Kerala to the vegetable crop industry is a crucial one. However, despite the rich diversity ofour vegetable crops, knowledge on their faunal composition, particularly of spider mites as pests and other relateddetails remains very much limited. In recent years due to random use of chlorinated hydrocarbons for control ofgeneral pests, which in turn kill their natural enemies, and because of using high yielding varieties and improvedagricultural practices, many mite species which were of less importance or of no value at all during the past haveassumed the status of major pests. These, among other factors have further aggravated the situation of the problemof spider mites as pests.The plant feeding mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) has piercing and sucking type of mouth parts with whichit pierces the leaf tissue and sucks the plant sap. The point of suction is marked by the appearance of white spotswhich gradually coalesce to form chlorotic patches, necrotic patches etc. Spider mite feeding cause various typesof direct damage like loss of chlorophyll, appearance of striplings or bronzing of foliage, stunting of growth,formation of galls and erineal patches thereby causing an array of deformities and reduction of yield. The intensityof damage ranging from simple mechanical injury to complex physiological alterations of the plant tissues wouldlead to collapse of the photosynthetic machinery of the plant. Apart from direct damages, many are known to actas vectors of plant viral diseases causing more potential loss to growers. In many instances, lack of informationabout the correct identity of spider mites, their biology and ecology caused serious consequences to agriculture.In view of their importance in agriculture, the present study is thought to be highly warranted, as it isenvisaged with a view to provide information on the impact of feeding of the spider mite
