Autonomous harvesting via hierarchical reinforcement learning in dynamic environments
A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Geospatial Surveying Engineering from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.Smart farming not only requires geospatial navigation but also uses various microprocessors and sensors to perform functions such as controlling temperature and irrigation systems. Advanced phenotyping modalities such as IoT and digital twin technologies revamped agriculture productivity to an extent hitherto unprecedented. However, matching crop cultivation and harvesting technology has yet to be further advanced to take advantage of data-driven crop production. Farming areas are often unstructured with dynamic objects such as human workers and farming machines. Therefore, a smart harvesting robot is in need of automatic navigation and obstacle avoidance. Due to conflicting objectives of goal-reaching and obstacle-avoidance, especially in a dynamic environment, harvesting is a challenging task for a robotic system. In this thesis, a novel Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning architecture is proposed, which is a robust multitask-capable AI model for an autonomous mobile manipulator to achieve both terrain coverage while assuring obstacle avoidance with dynamic objects. It is assumed that the manipulator is equipped with sensitive skin for omnidirectional sensitivity. The proposed Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning architecture is modeled with both Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm. As a result, two different hierarchical architectures are developed as Hierarchical Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (HDDPG) and Hierarchical Proximal Policy Optimization (HPPO) algorithms to autonomously manage two separate agents for both goal-reaching and obstacle-avoidance objectives. Transfer learning is adopted to assess if the trained models were overfit or underfit as well as for learning generalized policy. The algorithms were evaluated in a simulated environment by collecting fallen fruits in a crowded orchard farm environment with a variety of dynamic obstacles after being taught in a simple environment with fewer constraints. The metric used for this mission includes percent harvesting and the number of goal touch, the number of obstacle touch, navigation distance, and navigation time. HDDPG outperformed the remaining algorithms by 70% in terms of total average rewards and minimum pixel distance travel, whereas HPPO achieved the highest number of fruit collections, DDPG and PPO were unable to complete the test environment due to local minimum. Module 20: Using Language
Conversations are dynamic interactions between two or more people (Garrod & Pickering, 2004; Pickering & Garrod, 2004). The important thing to mention is that conversation is more than the act of speaking. Each person brings their own knowledge, and conversations are much easier to process if participants bring in shared knowledge. In this way, participants are responsible of how they bring in new knowledge. Grice (1975) proposed a basic principle of conversation and four "conversational maxims." His cooperative principle states that the speaker and listener agree that the person speaking should strive to make statements that further the agreed goals of conversation. The four maxims state the way of how to achieve this principle.
1. Quantity: The speaker should try to be informative, no over-/underinformation.
2. Quality: Do not say things which you believe to be false or lack evidence of.
3. Manner: Avoiding being obscure or ambiguous.
4. Relevance: Stay on topic of the exchange.
An example of a rule of conversation incorporating three of those maxims is the given-new-contract. It states that the speaker should construct sentences so that they include given and new information. Consequences of not following this rule were demonstrated by Haviland and Clark (1974) by presenting pairs of sentences (either following or ignoring the given-new-contract) and measuring the time participants needed until they fully understood the sentence. They found that participants needed longer in pairs of the type:
"We checked the picnic supplies. The beer was warm."
Rather than:
"We got some beer out of the trunk. The beer was warm."
The reason that it took longer to comprehend the second sentence of the first pair is that inferencing has to be done (beer has not been mentioned as being part of the picnic supplies)
The influence of disordered eating and social media's portrayals of pregnancy on young women's attitudes toward pregnancy
Background Given the heightened emphasis on physical appearance and the prevalence of social media in young women, they are particularly vulnerable to experiencing negative body image and disordered eating. Therefore, modified social media portrayals of pregnancy could cause young women to have negative attitudes toward a potential pregnancy and subsequently not properly utilize care and resources. The present study examined the influence of disordered eating and modified portrayals of pregnancy on young women’s attitudes toward a potential pregnancy and various feelings associated with pregnancy.
Methods The sample consisted of 154 women aged 18–30, who were given the Eating-Attitudes Test-26, randomly shown either modified or unmodified social media portrayals of pregnancy, then given the Attitudes Toward Potential Pregnancy Scale and the Gestational Weight Gain Psychosocial Risk Assessment Tool.
Results A series of hierarchal regressions revealed that there were no significant main effects or interactions for young women’s attitudes toward potential pregnancy. However, women who viewed modified portrayals of pregnancy had higher self-efficacy, and women with higher levels of disordered eating had lower self-efficacy, more positive attitudes toward gestational weight gain, and lower current body image satisfaction.
Conclusions These results highlight the myriad of different attitudes that young women have toward a potential pregnancy and how these attitudes are influenced by disordered eating and social media. Our findings can be used for educating caregivers and implementing intervention strategies for women.

Plain English summary Young women are more likely to have a negative body image and an unhealthy relationship with food because they are more focused on their physical appearance, especially with the rise of social media. If young women with these struggles see edited representations of pregnancy, they can develop a negative attitude about becoming pregnant in the future. This study examined how unhealthy eating habits and highly edited pictures of pregnant women impact young women’s attitudes toward a potential pregnancy. Our participants answered questions designed to see if they possess unhealthy eating thoughts and behaviors, then they were randomly shown either highly edited or not highly edited pictures of pregnant women from social media. Then, they answered questions about their attitude toward a potential pregnancy. We found that women with particularly unhealthy relationships with food were less confident about maintaining healthy eating habits throughout pregnancy. However, we also found that women who viewed the highly edited pictures were more confident about maintaining healthy eating habits throughout pregnancy. We can use these results to educate caregivers and help women get better care

Probably everybody has had experiences like the one described above. Even though, at first glance, there is nothing exciting happening in this everyday situation, a lot of what Perry just did or thought is highly interesting particularly for researchers and students in the field of Cognitive Psychology
