When the program wrapped up in April 2023, 57,500hadbeendisbursedto44faculty,andthetextbooksin17courseshadbeeneliminated,resultinginstudentsavingsofover57,500 had been disbursed to 44 faculty, and the textbooks in 17 courses had been eliminated, resulting in student savings of over 90,000 per semester

This study investigates these experiences to close the literature gap and enhance the scholarly conversation about the issue. Using a type of community-based participatory research called photovoice, participants could use photographs to explain their experiences with healthcare in South Texas as a transgender/non-binary individual.     Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a breach of human rights with a global impact (World Health Organization, 2017). Globally, more than 95 million children experience sexual abuse yearly (Barth et al., 2013). According to a review of six studies on the overall prevalence rate of CSA, it is estimated that 7-12% of children are sexually abused in the United States (Townsend & Rheingold, 2013). Survivors of CSA experience a long-term impact, including feelings of hopelessness and low self-esteem, affecting their ability to function daily. Due to the detrimental effect of CSA on survivors’ hope and self-esteem perceptions, there is a need for a treatment intervention to improve CSA survivors’ hope and self-esteem. Studies have indicated the effectiveness and benefits of positive self-affirmations (Düring & Jessop, 2015; Sherman & Cohen, 2014; Zhu & Yzer, 2021). However, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based positive self-affirmations on CSA survivors’ self-esteem and hope. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the degree to which CBT-based positive self-affirmations were effective in helping CSA survivors increase their perceptions of hope and self-esteem. I conducted a single case research design (SCRD, specifically, the A-B design) with multiple baselines. This study was conducted over a 9-week, including a baseline phase (three weeks) and a treatment phase (six weeks). During the baseline and treatment phases, data was collected through the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) and Herth hope index (HHI), including the initial assessment of the RSES and HHI. Data were analyzed using six variables (level, trend, variability, overlap, immediacy, and consistency), and the effect size was calculated using a percentage exceeding the mean (PEM) and Tau-U. I used SCRD to evaluate the degree to which CBT-based positive self-affirmations helped CSA survivors increase their perceptions of hope and self-esteem. I selected SCRD because of its ability to assess interventions’ effectiveness with small sample sizes. Participants were five females and one male, ages 24 to 46 years (N = 6), who met the study criteria and consented to participate in this study. The results indicate that CBT-based positive self-affirmations were effective in helping three participants (Amber, Clara, and Remy) increase their hope perceptions, and three participants (Amber, Eve, and Remy) increase their self-esteem perceptions with statistically significant improvements. All six participants’ ratings on the RSES and HHI illustrate that the treatment effect of CBT-based positive self-affirmations ranged from very effective to debatably effective (PEM > 0.50). The Tau-U value for all six participants in their RSES revealed debatably to very large effect sizes based on the comparison of baseline and treatment phases (τU > 0.60) while the Tau-U value for five (Amber, Clara, Fairlight, Jane, and Remy) out of six participants in their HHI showed moderate to very large effect sizes based on the comparison of baseline and treatment phases (τU > 0.50). This study supports that CBT-based positive self-affirmations could be an effective intervention for CSA survivors. Findings from other studies also support the effectiveness of CBT and positive self-affirmations (Bagley & Diambra, 2016; Harris et al., 2019; Lätth et al., 2022; O’Cleirigh et al., 2019; Silverman et al., 2013). This study also added to the existing literature by providing an effective way to help survivors of CSA improve their self-esteem and hope and cope with their traumatic symptoms.     Microbial diversity of bleached nurdles in the NorthWest Gulf of Mexico

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Marine BiologyNurdles are the raw material in the manufacture of plastic products. They are mass produced and transported worldwide, but accidental and negligent spills pollute marine environments. In the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), a citizen science initiative, the Nurdle Patrol, revealed that 20 of the highest nurdle-polluted beaches are found in Texas. Microorganisms, including potentially pathogenic bacteria, rapidly colonize nurdles. The purpose of this study was to broaden the understanding of nurdle-bacterial coupling through the following objectives: 1) characterize the microbial diversity of nurdles on a recreational beach compared to a natural substrate and 2) isolate potentially pathogenic members of the nurdle community and further analyze those isolates through whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and antimicrobial resistome analysis. Results show that the nurdles were colonized by a distinct (Faith’s phylogenetic distance, P < 0.001) and more uniform microbial community than beach sand. The nurdle community was dominated by Proteobacteria (69.5%) and Bacteroidota (21.7%) at the phylum level, and Rhodobacteraceae (26.2%) at the family level. Culturable members of the nurdle community included potentially pathogenic Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus paralicheniformis. Isolates possessed antimicrobial resistance genes (e.g., ATP-binding cassette (ABC) antibiotic efflux pumps and class A Bacillus cereus Bc beta-lactamases), and two B. paralicheniformis isolates appeared to be multidrug resistant (i.e., peptide, macrolide, and penam resistant). Results demonstrate that nurdles were colonized by a distinct community compared to a natural substrate. Additionally, nurdles supported the growth of potentially pathogenic Bacillus species with the genetic potential for antimicrobial resistance. Overall, these results establish a baseline knowledge of nurdle microbial diversity in the northwest GoM.Marine BiologyCollege of Scienc
