Module 7: Top-Down Processing and Visual Perception Gestalt Principles of Perception In the early part of the 20th century, Max Wertheimer (1912) published a paper demonstrating that individuals perceived motion in rapidly flickering static images—an insight that came to him as he used a child’s toy tachistoscope. Wertheimer, and his assistants Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka, who later became his partners, believed that perception involved more than simply combining sensory stimuli (i.e., bottom-up processing). This belief led to a new movement within the field of psychology known as Gestalt psychology. The word gestalt literally means form or pattern, but its use reflects the idea that the whole is different from the sum of its parts. In other words, the brain creates a perception that is more than simply the sum of available sensory inputs, and it does so in predictable ways. Gestalt psychologists translated these predictable ways into principles by which we organize sensory information. In other words, there are predicable top-down processing effects for how we interpret ambiguous stimuli. As a result, Gestalt psychology has been extremely influential in the area of sensation and perception (Rock & Palmer, 1990)

Towards long-term monitoring of plastic pollution in the Matagorda Bay systems: Quantitative analysis and FTIR characterization of macroplastics

    Get PDF
Department of Physical & Environmental SciencesMarine environments are constantly subjected to the threat of microplastic pollution due to anthropogenic activities Texas coastlines are increasingly polluted with industrial and domestic wastes Microplastics are known to adsorb and transport toxic pollutants including metals such as mercury, within the water column thus becoming a major risk to marine life This study is one of the projects funded by Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust aimed toward the long term assessment and remediation of Matagorda Bay from decades of industrial pollution We carried out surface extraction of plastic particles/items along the shorelines in 12 sites across the Bay, processed and characterized the plastics using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy The overall result will help us better understand how plastic influences the biodistribution and bioavailability of other toxic pollutants in this Bay and how this affects marine life and its environments. The project was funded by Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust

Service-learning in counselor education: A qualitative inquiry on core counselor education faculty lived experiences developing and enhancing student multicultural competency and social justice advocacy skills in CACREP-accredited programs

A dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in COUNSELOR EDUCATION from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas.Service-learning is an experiential pedagogical approach that incorporates course content with applied learning. As a teaching method utilized as part of student personal and professional development, it involves work with clients and communities to address identified issues. Seminal and contemporary literature related to service-learning indicates how the approach is relevant to all involved based on the inclusion of meaningful shared experiences that furthers societal growth, and social progress. When included in counselor education, students can enhance and apply skills related to serving clients, communities, and populations they may work with as clinicians. Literature on service-learning in counselor education indicates that this pedagogy also enhances student multicultural competency (MCC) and social justice advocacy (SJA) skills. With MCC and SJA being prevalent within the service-learning literature, there is a need for a clearer understanding of how the approach is utilized in counselor education. This study is a qualitative inquiry that includes a phenomenological research methodology to answer the research question: What are the lived experiences of core counselor education faculty who have taught service- learning courses in CACREP-accredited programs to develop and enhance student multicultural competence and social justice advocacy skills? It examines the lived experiences to provide further insights, research implications, and recommendations for future research, the profession, and faculty who may want to incorporate service-learning as part of counselor training. Findings from this inquiry include three themes, and three subthemes, that are defined and explained with significant statements from five participants.Counseling & Educational PsychologyCollege of Education and Human Developmen
