Use of Standardized Discharge Education Program (SDEP) and gollow-up phone calls to reduce heart failure readmissions
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice.Improved coordination and collaboration to ensure continuous care for the chronically ill is needed within rural communities for the improved health benefit of rural patients. A gap exists between current discharge teaching and post-discharge follow-up for patients diagnosed with heart failure. The purpose of the project was to decrease heart failure hospital readmissions in adults 65 years of age and older and increase the patient follow-up visit rate with primary care providers after hospital discharge. Patients were educated on the purpose of the project and texted four scheduled weekly texts containing a video link for heart failure specific self-care management educational sessions, lasting 5-6 minutes, and were encouraged to schedule a follow-up visit with their primary care provider within a week of receiving the final educational text. The impact of the standardized discharge education (SDEP) resulted in a reduction in hospital readmission rates of 100% (n = 7) from the last quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023 at the privately owned nurse practitioner clinic. At the end of the 12-week initiative, all participating patients (n = 7, 100%) made follow-up appointments with the primary care provider. The results of this project indicate a nurse-led SDEP can increase patient understanding of heart failure and self-care management, thus reducing 30-day hospital readmission rates. Follow-up phone calls remind patients to follow-up with their primary care provider and offered an opportunity for patients to ask clarifying questions. Earlier post discharge visits with the primary care provider can result in earlier intervention, lowering the risk of emergency room visits and hospital readmissions.Nursing PracticeCollege of Nursing and Health Scienc
Talk is cheap: Direct evidence of conservation-based changes in angler behavior
Post-release mortality threatens shark populations already imperiled by overfishing, capture stress, and a changing climate. Few studies have quantified post-release mortality for sharks captured in land-based recreational fisheries. From 2018 to 2021, a land-based shark post-release mortality study was conducted and identified water temperature and species-specific behavior as contributing factors to post-release mortality. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effectiveness of disseminating the recommendation for best practices to recreational shark anglers and to determine if this information influenced angler behavior. Awareness of our post-release mortality study influenced an angler's likely release behavior, with an increase in sharks landed in the water and corresponding decrease of sharks landed on dry sand. This study demonstrated direct evidence of conservation-based changes in angler behavior following effective research communication and involvement of anglers in research. Outreach and engagement initiatives aimed at providing best handling practices to recreational anglers should be easily digestible, widely available, and an important component of future research

Religiosity and risk: Association of Judeo-Christian ethicality with a sustainable business environment
Prior research has examined the relationship of religiosity to aspects of business risks, notably, the ethical environment in which business firms operate. Religiosity is connected to economic factors and societal factors. This study examines the relationship of religion-based ethics, specifically Judeo-Christian ethicality, in a country (measured by Judeo-Christian presence as a proportion of the population) to economic freedom, economic activity, gender equality, social progress, and corruption. Modern business firms, in efforts to embrace diversity, accommodate cultural factors such as religiosity, particularly so in multinational operations where diverse religions will be encountered. Findings show that Judeo-Christian ethicality has a positive relationship to factors connected to a society’s sustainable business culture—that is, more economic freedom, higher economic activity, improved gender equality, better social progress, and lower corruption. This research received no external funding
Leadership unscripted: Portraits of female crisis leadership
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. This research afforded three female PK-12 educational leaders space in which to examine, deconstruct, reflect, and build upon sensemaking to?understand how they led their campus out of a crisis, how healing from a crisis happened for the leader, and how they led their school community. Three portraits were used to highlight these female PK-12 educational leaders’ experiences to examine contexts, narrative, practices, and consequences of crisis leadership. The research used two interconnected theoretical frames: feminist standpoint theory (Harding, 1996) and sensemaking (Weick, 1993; 2009). Instead of accepting the adage that effective crisis female leadership can be explained by the traditional lens of a leader’s tactile and relational approaches to preparedness and response (Weeks et al., 2013), a portraiture methodology was used (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997) to illuminate the authenticity of the leaders’ actions and goodness that arose out of lived crisis realities of three female PK-12 educational leaders as they led through crises. The purpose of this study was to explore the intersection of sensemaking, crisis leadership, and leadership authenticity as shared through stories and conversations of three female PK-12?educational leaders. The secondary purpose of the study was to expand upon the space within a privileged setting that has been historically viewed through a male perspective by examining the impact of posttraumatic growth leadership development in women leading through a crisis.? The intended audience for this research is educational leaders, specifically female leaders and leadership preparation program faculty. The portraits presented in this study highlighted the strengths and moral/spiritual compasses these female leaders used to navigate crises. Although Liberty, Karina, and Bella faced many challenges during their crises, they faced them with courage—they used different strategies to overcome the crises with the support of the people in their lives, and they displayed resilient leadership skills in performing their duties as a leader. Most leaders deal with crises at some point in their career. This research is significant in that it may help to prevent the isolation that is often felt by leaders dealing with crises.Educational Leadership, Curriculum & InstructionCollege of Education and Human Developmen

Synthesis of aspartic acid-based bifurcated tripeptide surfactants
Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences, College of ScienceAmino acid-based surfactants (AABS) are amphipathic molecules composed of an amino acid-based polar headgroup and nonpolar hydrocarbon chain. Surfactants, the truncated name for surface-active agents, are molecules that decrease surface tension. It is this property, along with their amphipathic structure, that imbues surfactants with useful properties, such as encapsulating other compounds and emulsifying insoluble phases. AABS are of particular interest, as they incorporate amino acids, which are the building blocks of life. The incorporation of amino acids as the polar headgroup thus improves bioavailability and biodegradability, thereby increasing the applications of this subset of surfactants. The objective of this study is to synthesize and characterize a group of novel tripeptide bifurcated AABS with aspartic acid as the central amino acid at the polar headgroup. This research is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant #505048
