Writing on the island
Welcome to Writing on the Island, an open educational resource textbook created for TAMUCC students by TAMUCC faculty. While there are a lot of “paid textbook” options available, one of our primary goals was offering a textbook with no additional cost to students. That does not mean that this is the bargain-bin version of a textbook, but a collaboration and collection of resources that can be revised and updated without additional cost. This means that this textbook will only keep getting better, with you, the student, at the center of this OER (Open Educational Resource) endeavor. If you are reading this, your instructor probably assigned you this textbook and you are dreading yet another boring reading experience. While I cannot promise that this book will be as exciting as any of your other favorite reads, I can assure you that a lot of care went into creating a book with you in mind. Here are some key features of this textbook and how to use them: 1. Some text will have embedded links that connect you to other readings or resources or other areas in the textbook. Feel free to click any link and explore as you read for a more immersive and comprehensive experience. 2. Section 1.5 has reading strategies to employ as you go, so skipping ahead may benefit you, especially if you are unfamiliar with navigating academic texts. 3. You or your instructor may choose to jump around when reading or utilizing this textbook, and that is perfectly fine. Some sections work well as stand-alone sections, and several will give brief overviews of some larger concepts in case you need a review or were not assigned the section on the larger concept. 4. Some sections have end-of-the-section questions or activities that your instructors may assign, but even if they do not, you can still look over the questions to help reflect on the readings. 5. The end of this book has some resources that may benefit you early on. We put them at the end of the textbook, since not every instructor may choose to use them, and not every student may want or need them, but we recommend that you investigate them before getting too far into the course. a. Microsoft Office 365 Resources and FeaturesWelcome to the Island University! The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi First-Year Writing Program coordinates ENGL 0101, 1301, and 1302, to provide the best instruction in writing that we can. This instruction is meant to prepare you for your years in college and in your future careers and life paths. At TAMU-CC, we have a long history of teaching writing in ways that are informed by the national scholarly conversation of writing studies. The excellence of this program is evident in the best practices we use and bring to the classroom, in our major, minor, and certificates, and in the research and scholarship of our faculty. In addition, it is evident in this textbook, which is updated with the latest theories of writing, learning, and tackles questions of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI). Our classroom practices are informed by research on how people write, how they learn, and what they need to be flexible, adept writers ready to take on new challenges. Since 1994, the First-Year Writing Program has worked with First-Year Seminar and the First-Year Learning Communities Program to teach writing in ways that connects to majors, meets the needs of first-year students, and coordinates with the demands of other first-year classes. As a program, we are primarily attempting to help you: Understand that writing, language, and rhetoric are all multifaceted and evolving, and Be able to use writing and language in ways that will help you achieve your goals. Those of us who teach Writing and Rhetoric I and II worked together to construct this book both out of original material we wrote and by bringing in content from other creative commons projects. We hope it is helpful and useful to you! Go Islanders

Twitter economic uncertainty and herding behavior in ESG markets
Attention to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing has grown in recent years. Even after the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) global pandemic, there has been a rise in financial instruments that are structured according to certain prescribed “sustainable finance” objectives. From a risk management perspective, and as we continue to see a rise in inflows into such instruments, it is important to appreciate that ESG markets will have a growing influence on our financial system and its development. In light of this, and using a sample of some of the most common and popular US-based ESG index funds, this study explores the extent to which herding behaviors are present in such markets. From a regulatory point of view, such behaviors are important to identify, given that they can lead to excess price volatility, bubbles, and other such market-destabilizing phenomena. In addition, this study builds a framework for exploring whether Twitter-based economic uncertainty, which is arguably a forward-looking indicator of investors’ expectations, can exacerbate herding behaviors in ESG markets. Overall, this study shows the following: (i) herding behaviors are present in ESG markets; (ii) rises in Twitter economic uncertainty can potentially exacerbate such herding; (iii) although ESG funds, like traditional asset classes, generally show a negative risk–return tradeoff, this can be driven by changes in Twitter economic uncertainty. This research received no external funding
Examining the changes in success rates of Texas basic peace officer trainees on the state licensing examination
The purpose of this study was to determine if there has been a change to the scores on the Texas State Peace Officer Licensing Examination over a given time, and if been a so, identify subjects where scores improved or declined. By recognizing stagnation or declination in test scores, interventions can be designed to enhance the adult learning experience for peace officer candidates. To determine if a change over time occurred, I utilized a non-experimental, longitudinal, descriptive quantitative analysis research design. My results showed that there was a change in 8 of 23 topics investigated. 7 topics showed a decline in pass rate over the study period and 1 topic showed an increase in pass rate over the study period. The study suggests that topics showing a decline in test scores for academy students correspond with changes in delivery methods brought about by staff changes and the global pandemic. It further suggests that increases in test scores for academy students correspond with increases in curricular hours and added topic emphasis.Educational Leadership, Curriculum & InstructionCollege of Education and Human Developmen
