Assessing the financial condition of municipalities in Nepal

    No full text
The research issue centers on examining the solvency of urban municipalities in Nepal, focusing on their ability to meet long-term financial obligations. The main aim of the study is to assess the financial condition of municipalities in the context of Nepal. A descriptive research design was employed to assess the financial condition of municipalities. The study targeted only the urban municipalities of Nepal. The study comprises two years of data from 2019/20 and 2020/21. The sample consisted of 37 urban municipalities representing different types in different geographical locations representing all seven provinces and all ecological zones in Nepal.  The analysis of the financial condition of local urban governments in Nepal across two fiscal years (2019/20 and 2020/21) reveals no significant differences in LGFCI based on municipal type (f(2,72)=0.166, p>0.05) or ecological zone (f(2,72)=0.229, p>0.05). In FY 2019/20, 5 local governments were classified as having a good financial condition, 25 as average, and 7 as poor. In FY 2020/21, the numbers dropped to 3 in good condition, 29 in average, and 5 in poor condition. There was limited movement in financial status between the two years, with 7 local governments shifting, and most remained in the average category. This suggests a need for improved financial management in local governments.  In conclusion, the financial condition of local urban governments in Nepal, based on LGFCI, shows no significant difference by municipal type or ecological zone. Most local governments are classified as having an average financial condition, with only a few in good or poor financial status. Over the two fiscal years, few local governments showed changes in their financial status, highlighting the need for better financial management practices to improve stability. The results have policy implications for strengthening fiscal federalism in Nepal

Factors affecting travel intention and purchase behavior of airline passengers: the mediating role of promotional discounts in airline tickets

    No full text
This study examines the impact of social media exposure to promotional discounts on the travel intentions and purchasing behaviours of Millennials and Generation X airline consumers in the National Capital Region (NCR), Philippines, as social media and technology increasingly serve as vital instruments in the airline industry\u27s marketing and promotional sales strategies. Due to the existence of studies on this topic elsewhere, there is a paucity of research and statistics available to reflect the current state of the Philippine aviation business. Considering that airlines are gradually rebounding from the challenges posed by the early pandemic and the tourism business is currently thriving, the researchers found it compelling and recognised the potential for more investigation on this topic. The researchers conducted an analysis of data from 390 respondents using PLS-SEM, revealing that social media exposure does not directly affect travel intentions, although both brand image and promotional discounts do have an influence. Travel intentions serve as significant indicators of purchasing behaviour. Promotional discounts act as an essential intermediary between social media visibility and brand perception regarding travel intentions. These findings underscore the significance of integrating Promotional Discounts into social media and branding efforts to effectively enhance customer Travel Intention. Scholars and researchers may significantly benefit from the conceptual framework and findings of the present study. Additional investigation into the interrelations among the elements may enhance the economic resilience of the tourism and airline industries during a pandemic. The findings indicate that promotional discounts serve as a mediator; therefore, marketers and decision-makers in the tourism sector should explore strategies to enhance their advertising and marketing approaches to boost travel intentions and foster business growth

Good financial behavior helps individuals manage their spending, savings, and investments wisely, so that they can achieve their short-term and long-term financial goals. This research makes a theoretical contribution by supporting the theory of Planned Behavior and for educational institutions, non-governmental organizations and other related parties can take the initiative to provide training related to financial literacy. It is hoped that future research can add new variables to influence financial behavior

Democratising Technical Analysis: How Large Language Models Support Retail Breakout Strategies Under Random Walk Constraints

    No full text
This study examines whether Large Language Models (LLMs) can support momentum-based breakout strategies for retail investors by analysing technical charts and validating statistical patterns. We analysed 3,621 price charts (2023–2025) to assess LLMs’ ability to identify trading setups and deviations from random walk behaviour. 13,624 tests were run on 1,204 trades using various statistical tests. While 70% of patterns conformed to random walk behaviour in the short term (7–15 days), momentum signals rose to 26.42% over longer periods (50–250 days). Complex prompting produced both higher random walk classification (72.41% vs. 69.29%) and better returns than single-shot prompting. Incorporating Gamma Exposure (GEX) improved caution but reduced return rates. Discrepancies of up to 20% between JavaScript and Python implementations underscored LLMs’ current limitations in statistical precision. Overall, LLMs may democratise technical analysis but still require human oversight, structured prompting, and validation through traditional methods

The study explores contributory factors that make a fundamental contribution within the built environment pertaining to the management of the cognitive perceptions and attitude of risk with its concomitant insights, contributions and expectations. The built environment infrastructure is a fundamental component of economic prosperity as the research focuses on the construction of national roads and the associated risks, both internal and external, to primary and secondary stakeholders. The research purpose is to illuminate those factors within the risk management discipline which are critical from the prism of the employees and other indirect contracting personnel who are the main contributors within the high-risk environment of the built environment. The study employed the interpretivist philosophy, which is synonymous with the inductive approach of the qualitative methodology. The purposive sampling technique was adopted to solicit the expertise, insights, and experiences of approximately twenty respondents who held management and supervisory portfolios in the organisation. The interview channel was the preferred research instrument used to collect and contribute towards the extrapolation of data from the study respondents. The findings in the study illuminate the significance of the prioritisation of the culture, behaviour and actionable tendencies that seek to eliminate and mitigate the risk permutations in these perilous and often life-threatening safety and hazardous construction sites. The study concluded by acknowledging the organization-wide responsibility and compliance with the manageable risk appetite and also illuminated the significance of monitoring and evaluating the perceptions and attitudes of personnel involved in these precarious and yet fundamental contributors of economic prosperity pertaining to infrastructure improvement, development and modernisation

This qualitative study examines significant educational challenges encountered by HIV/AIDS-infected rural female learners with physical disabilities in Zimbabwe amidst the severe impacts of El Niño-induced droughts. To capture nuanced perspectives of this marginalised group, researchers selected 16 participants based on specific criteria, including gender. The data collection process comprised two separate focus group discussions: one involving learners with disabilities and the other involving adult participants. This strategic approach seeks to reduce power imbalances and facilitate the expression of individual narratives by learners. The thematic analysis of the data identified two significant findings. Initially, individuals with physical disabilities and HIV/AIDS faced significant obstacles in obtaining educational resources, exacerbated by the intersectional effects of their disabilities, health conditions, and environmental challenges. Female learners encountered additional gender-related challenges, such as social stigma, insufficient family support, and heightened caregiving responsibilities at home, which further impeded their educational achievement and overall well-being. This study recommends the development of inclusive and comprehensive support programs that address the needs of learners with physical disabilities and HIV/AIDS, ensuring access to healthcare, assistive technologies, and tailored educational accommodations. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should implement policies that offer flexible learning options and resource allocation for HIV/AIDS-affected rural female learners with disabilities during El Niño droughts, thereby ensuring their sustained access to education

The purpose of the study was to explore the challenges and strategies of cultivating and promoting inclusivity and diversity in the energy sector. Grounded in the interpretivist research paradigm, a qualitative approach was adopted specifically using descriptive multiple case study design. In-depth interviews were conducted from sixteen purposively selected participants from the energy industry in Chipinge district, Zimbabwe. Data was analyzed using the thematic data analysis technique.  The study found out that the work environment in the energy industry was partially inclusive. There is evidence of both success stories and challenges with regards to inclusivity in the energy sector. The main challenges faced by the energy sector in promoting inclusivity include resource inadequacies, unconscious biases, resistance to change, communication barriers, tokenism, lack of knowledge and commitment from managers, strategic misalignment, policy deficiency and gender disparities in leadership roles. The strategies that can be employed to cultivate an inclusive work environment are the development of comprehensive policies, cultural transformation through management training, deliberate inclusion in procurement and infrastructure design, regular employee surveys, inclusive leadership programs, and mentorship initiatives. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on fostering inclusivity in the workplace by equipping all stakeholders with full knowledge and understanding of inclusive workplace dynamics. The study also contributes to the body of knowledge by shedding light on the challenges faced by the energy sector and strategies for accelerating the embracing of inclusivity in the energy sector. Furthermore, the study adds to the underexplored discourse of diversity management in Southern Africa and brings a grounded qualitative voice to the broader literature

High-frequency data offers unparalleled insights into market dynamics, facilitating the analysis of statistical properties, dynamic correlations, and scaling behaviours with a precision previously unattainable. These Statistical Properties are essential framework for understanding and modelling the interactions between global financial markets over time. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic conditional correlations and scaling behaviour of high-frequency data from January,1 2010 to December 31, 2020. Using the S&P 500, FTSE 100, Nikkei 225, HKEX and DAX as sampled financial markets, the results revealed significant differences in correlation patterns across the markets, as well as fractal-like scaling behaviour. The relationship between the S&P 500-FTSE 100 and S&P 500-DAX supports trend-following strategies, while the Nikkei 225-HKEX and Nikkei 225-FTSE 100 may be closer to random-walk behaviour. This study advances the frontier of knowledge on high-frequency data and offers insights into the temporal relationships and scaling properties between financial markets
