    The Villains in Hardy’s Novels

    Get PDF
The villains cannot be the hero in Thomas Hardy’s novels. They are, however, endowed the important role to influence greatly on the life of the heroine. The prototype of the villains is Troy, who deserts Fanny and marries Bathsheba, and leaves his wife after the deaths of Fanny and her child. Unfortunately, he is shot by Boldwood. Troy’s inheritors―Fitzpiers, Wildeve, and Alec―have common characteristics. All of them are sexually very attractive men. As they are philanderers, the women loved by them are deserted in the end. Without working hard, they indulge in gambling or romantic adventures with married women. They will not face any hardships, but escape from the realities, leaving their lands and their family. Although they win the heroine’s love, their ends except Fitzpiers are miserable deaths. The villains are negative characters who are not investigated into their psychological problems by Hardy, which makes them unable to be a hero.departmental bulletin pape

The effect of wild rooibos tea on autonomic nervous function

    Get PDF
The leaves of rooibos, a plant which only grows in the Republic of South Africa, are used to prepare a non-caffeine herb tea having pharmacological activities. We investigated the effect of rooibos tea on the autonomic nervous function and subjective mood. The subjects, 22 healthy adult females, were given rooibos tea and the following physiological parameters were measured, blood pressure, heart rate at low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF), and salivary amylase. The profi le of mood states (POMS) test was obtained to analyze the psychological condition, and the Uchida-Kraepelin test was used to load stress for 30 minutes. One control group was given plain hot water and the other, green tea (gyokuro). Rooibos tea significantly reduced salivary amylase activity (p<0.01), and alleviated “Depression-Dejection” in POMS. This suggested that rooibos tea has a relaxation effect towards stress. Analysis of the scent component of rooibos tea leaves by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) revealed the presence of guaiacol and geranylacetone.departmental bulletin pape
