A review of the literature on factors and reasons why some pregnant women do not have prenatal care

The concerning number of pregnant women with no prenatal care has recently become a social problem. The unpreparedness of a mother for the upcoming delivery of her child does not only affect her, but the unborn child as well. In addition, this situation of unpreparedness also creates a huge burden for the medical facility that accepts the pregnant woman. In Osaka, a survey revealed that the number of pregnant women with no prenatal care peaked at 307 women in the year 2012, but declined thereafter. However, a survey in 2017 indicated there were still 191 cases of women without prenatal care, demonstrating the continued need for measures to prevent women from being in that situation. For this purpose, we searched the Japan Medical Abstracts Society (Ichushi) web database for literatureover the past 30 years with regard to our topic, and used the keywords “pregnant women with no prenatal care,” and analyzed the background factors that caused women to forego procuring prenatal care. The results of our study showed four common reasons why women do not avail prenatal care. At 37.1%, the most common reason of the four, was “economic reasons.” This was followed by “unaware of pregnancy” at 10.2%, and “unable to consult with anyone” at 6.3%, and lastly by “busy” at 4.6%. It must be noted that the literature of the past 5 years has shown that “economic reasons” is already declining as a significant reason, while cases where complex home environment, which include the reasons of “unaware of pregnancy” and “unable to consult with anyone” have started to increase. It cannot be denied that women are aware of the existence of public subsidies for pregnancy medical checkups, which is why the factor of “economic reasons” has started decreasing. However, it is apparent that women not receiving prenatal care for other reasons still continue to exist. It is therefore now clear that measures should be taken to address not only the economic state of women and its effect on their pregnancies, but also the need for provision of greater assistance to pregnant women with complex home environments.departmental bulletin pape

Health education for Kindergarten Children by Nursing Students -Focusing on Understanding of Nursing Students-

    Get PDF
As part of their pediatric nurse practical training, students conducted health education for kindergarteners at a kindergarten. After the training, students and kindergarten teachers completed a questionnaire on health education. The overall recovery rate for the questionnaire was 84%. There was a large significant difference between the awareness of the students and that of the kindergarten teachers, particularly regarding three survey items on their understanding of educational methods suitable for the children’s development. The students could obtain a real understanding of the importance of recognizing and supporting individuality of each child based on interactions with that child. This suggests the need to devise teaching methods and instructional arrangements to improve students’ understanding of the children.departmental bulletin pape

Reminiscing on the history of shoka and douyo

    Get PDF
Shoka is a song composed in Japan from the Meiji Period to the end of World WarⅡfor the music education of children in elementary school. Douyo is a song for children composed by poets and musicians with new movement in the Taisho Era (1912 to 1926). These songs are very familiar to Japanese people who have sung them since their childhood. For this study, ten songs were selected and traced. Some songs were eliminated from authorized music textbooks after World WarⅡ because they were infl uenced by militarism. However, many of the songs have been sung since the Meiji Period. Tracing the history of a song shows its close relationship with world movement and culture even if it is only a children’s song. It also reveals the efforts of those writing the lyrics and composing the songs.departmental bulletin pape

Factors affecting self-choice and self-determination of the elderly- Report on joint research projects on nursing care and human rights -

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that make it difficult for the elderly to express their opinions based on their understanding of the revised long-term care insurance services as well as their own manner of self-expression. An interview survey of 19 persons requiring long-term care revealed that the elderly prioritized relationships with relatives rather than expressing their own hopes or intentions, were highly dependent, and did not complain about their inability to express self-choice and self-decision. Dependency was also found in relationships with care workers. The findings suggested that rather than self-selection based on dependence, support should be given to enable to self-selection and decision-making by the elderly themselves based on understanding of the system.departmental bulletin pape
