    A Vessel of Light (Creative)

This label invites you to look closely, and allows your eyes to wander. Look not for harmony, but for discovery. Here sits a small vase with a round body and a narrow lip. Copper and green patches cover the surface. A short foot keeps it steady. The fired glaze makes a smooth skin. Thin bands and specks are visible in the light. What stories rest in this container before the photo was taken? Was it made for flowers, or simply to feel good in the hand? The marks show more than decoration. They show touch, heat and time. There should not be a harmony to viewing this picture. The eyes are drawn to parts of the object like flashes of light, guided only by curiosity. I kept the streaks of light in the photo to show the curve against a dark background. Much of the scene is dark, so the imperfections stand out. The bright areas mark the rim, the shoulder, and the foot. Notice the color changes and the edges of the highlights. What details stand out to you?https://crossworks.holycross.edu/photographing_antiquity/1064/thumbnail.jp

Beneath the Cross: A History of A History highlights Sarah Campbell’s journey as an author of two publications about the Jesuit Cemetery at the College of the Holy Cross. This lecture will focus on Campbell’s writing process, which involved expanding a small collection of notes about key figures laid to rest in the Jesuit Cemetery into both a full- fledged book celebrating the College’s 175th Anniversary and a peer-reviewed journal article.https://crossworks.holycross.edu/aoth/1024/thumbnail.jp

Vanguard for a New Age: Artivism through Jazz by Rhiannon Hurst builds upon New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets By Women Composers curated by Grammy Award Winning Composer and Performer, Terri Lyne Carrington. Rhiannon’s project amplifies and brings into action the book\u27s foundation by exploring Jazz without patriarchy through the lives and works of female composers from New Standards. The project will include conducting interviews with women and non-binary individuals about their lived experiences in Jazz. The research of the female composers from New Standards and the interviews bridge past to present, culminating in a written thesis focusing on Artivism (Art Activism) across Jazz history. Rhiannon will actualize her research through a recorded album of their compositions by a band of all female and non-binary musicians, teaching inclusive music fundamentals to underserved children in the Worcester community, and presenting a final performance that integrates history and musicology through the lens of Artivism
