Final report.; Sponsoring agency: Ohio Department of Transportation, Office of Statewide Planning & Research; Contract or grant no.: 38587; "August 2024."; "PID: 136690."; "U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration."; Additional information provided in email: PID 118510, SJN 136690.; "Performing organization name ... University of Cincinnati, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management"--unnumbered page 2.; "Prepared in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Transportation and DriveOhio"--unnumbered page 3Final report (95 pages) -- [Fact sheet] (2 unnumbered pages)This report summarizes the results of the Student Transportation Advancement Research (STAR) project aimed to explore and expand up the connected and autonomous vehicle education (CAVe)-in-a-box tool. This project focused on the development of educational resources for middle school and high school educators and their students for the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-integrated curricula. Specifically, the research team explored connected and automated vehicles (CAV) and the various engineering systems and technologies used in this field of study, as well as new applications to solve civil engineering problems. Partnering with Ohio schools and educators in the physical sciences, the research team build age-appropriate resources supplemented by innovative activities, projects, and games to effectively demonstrate these new technologies, culminating in the inaugural ENG2YOU Future Engineers Camp hosted at the University of Cincinnati during the Summer of 2023. This cross-disciplined engineering camp served as a rallying event for students who spent the day exploring new technologies, learning more about different engineering disciplines, collaborating with other students from across the region, and networking with young engineering professionals. The camp included parallel training for chaperoning educators, a university tour, competitions between schools and student teams, an AV car demonstration, and the official unveiling and exhibition of the scaled CAV system prototype developed by the research team. Whereas existing, comparable resources are limited with respect to audience and application, this project aimed to meet the needs, excite the interests, and encourage the potential of younger students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds. Moreover, while reliance on and applications to computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering are more obvious, this project offered exciting new possibilities to the design, construction, and maintenance of safe, sustainable, and smart infrastructure appropriate to transportation engineering. The results evidence signs of improved student familiarity with connected and/or autonomous vehicles, new interest in careers in engineering and transportation, retained vocabulary related to CAV concepts, and sustained student engagement opportunity at the local level. The resulting curriculum will be incorporated into the 2024-2025 edition of the DriveOhio K-12 Educator Toolkit
