Daydreaming as spontaneous immersive imagination: A phenomenological analysis

    Get PDF
Research on the specific features of daydreaming compared with mind-wandering and night dreaming is a neglected topic in the philosophy of mind and the cognitive neuroscience of spontaneous thought. The extant research either conflates daydreaming with mind-wandering (whether understood as task-unrelated thought, unguided attention, or disunified thought), characterizes daydreaming as opposed to mind-wandering (Dorsch, 2015), or takes daydreaming to encompass any and all “imagined events” (Newby-Clark & Thavendran, 2018). These dueling definitions obstruct future research on spontaneous thought, and are insufficiently precise to guide empirical studies. They also fail to illuminate the phenomenal core of daydreaming, namely, its dreamlike qualities. Although daydreaming is related to both mind-wandering and narrative imagination, it is not reducible to either. We argue that daydreams are experiences of spontaneous, immersive imagination in the waking state. The main task of our investigation is to distinguish daydreaming, conceptually and phenomenologically, from mind-wandering, on the one hand, and night dreaming, on the other. Although daydream experiences can vary widely, we distinguish prototypical experiences of daydreaming from adjacent imaginative activity, including fleeting imagery and “focused daydreaming,” or crafted visualization. We consider our phenomenological analysis as preparatory work for conceptually distinguishing different spontaneous and imaginative states so that they can be investigated accordingly with questionnaires and qualitative methods. We argue that precision about the phenomenal character of daydreaming can guide neurophenomenological investigations, help delimit studies on individual variance in daydreaming features, and identify differences among daydreaming, mind-wandering, and night dreaming conceptually and phenomenologically, and possibly eventually in terms of neural correlates

Prospects for epistemic generationism about memory

    Get PDF
A source of epistemic justification can be either preservative or generative, in that it can either just preserve justification that was provided by some other source or generate justification on its own. This paper asks what is required for generationism about memory to be true and argues that there are rather demanding conditions that a case of memory justification needs to satisfy in order to count as epistemically generative in a substantive sense. By considering a parallel argument for epistemically generative cases of imagination and drawing from empirical data on event completion, we argue that there are such cases of memory justification because the way in which memory processes fill in the content of event memories suggests that memory is fit to provide justification about past events that is not due to a source other than memory

“My Life Has Ended”: Exploring the Refugee Protection Process and How it Affects Future Orientation in Refugees

    Get PDF
Much of refugee protection focuses on the legal aspects within the international refugee protection regime, which arguably results in less attention being paid to the more practical aspects to the realisation of that protection including the processes the refugees have to undergo as well as its impacts. As a cornerstone of the international refugee protection regime, non-refoulement (the forcible return of people to countries where they face persecution) is also a jus cogens (peremptory norm from which no derogation is permitted) principle. While crucial in and of itself, a meaningful protection regime should ideally result in further non-violation of refugees’ human rights including the prevention of refugees being revictimised, particularly when undergoing processes intended in securing their protection. Through refugee narratives, this article takes us on a journey in exploring some of the ways in which the protection regime may contribute to harming refugees. Further, based on refugee testimonies, this article sheds light on the probable impacts to refugees’ future orientation, an outcome of having undergone the protection processes as they take the perilous journey from flight to resettlement. More critically, this article aims to open the discussion further with a view to improve protection outcomes and prevent revictimisation of the refugees themselves as they navigate these various processes

Una disputa de cos present. Controvèrsies en la mort de Josep Maria de Sagarra (1894–1961)

This article analyzes the different reactions that followed the death of the writer Josep Maria de Sagarra in 1961, one of the most popular authors in 20th-century Catalan culture, for his poetic and narrative work, journalism, and especially theater. In the context of the Franco dictatorship, Sagarra’s funeral became a large-scale political act, organized and used by the authorities to show their capacity to integrate an author who had written all of his significant work in the Catalan language. Sagarra lived between two worlds, with some links to the cultural resistance, but publicly signified by his willingness to adapt to the official sphere. For this reason, the Francoist authorities took a great interest in capitalizing on the funeral, which in turn left clandestine Catalanism without a civic-political reference. The article details the clear awareness of the official initiative, widely disseminated through the press, as well as the reactions of the opposition sectors, in restricted-circulation publications and on exile platforms. These controversies about Sagarra’s civic and political role were only on a few occasions translated to the evaluation of his work. This article analyzes the different reactions that followed the death of the writer Josep Maria de Sagarra in 1961, one of the most popular authors in 20th-century Catalan culture, for his poetic and narrative work, journalism, and especially theater. The treatment of the deaths of Maria Aurèlia Capmany and Montserrat Roig both in the media and in the various commemorative events and initiatives organised in the months and years that followed generate rich and nuanced understanding of the public weight of these two women writers as well as providing insights into approaches to literary afterlives and commemoration in the Catalan cultural scene of the 1990s. This article is based on careful scrutiny of the various texts and discourses produced in memory of two emblematic women writers and public figures who themselves recognised the political and ethical importance of such practices of commemoration. It is followed by reproduction of an article written by Roig herself in memory of Capmany shortly before her own passing. Teaching Value-Loaded Critical Thinking in Philosophy Education

    Get PDF
Value-loaded critical thinking refers to a combination of critical thinking, moral value development and reflection. It is important to teach value-loaded critical thinking in secondary education and philosophy seems the pre-eminent subject to do so. This article describes the theoretical foundations of value-loaded critical thinking, its educational objectives, and what is known about effective teaching strategies. Value-loaded critical thinking is best taught in teacher-led philosophical dialogues. Four design principles summarize effective teaching strategies for teaching value-loaded critical thinking in dialogue: teachers should (1) explicitly address moral values in dialogue; (2) apply moral values to engaging or realistic examples; (3) promote critical reasoning about moral values; and (4) provide opportunities for reflection

Abstract: This article outlines the origins of the academic journal Fremdsprachen und Hochschule(FuH) and its development in the early phase of the Association of University Language Centres(AKS) in Germany. It examines the decision-making processes regarding topics, formats and intendedtarget groups. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, based on a corpus of AKS textsand documents and an expert interview. The results show that academic publishing has been crucial in establishing the identity of the AKSand how it has contributed significantly to establishing the association during its early years. Bypublishing research-based professional reflections, concepts, studies and practical experiences,FuH has taken a pioneering role in the field of language teaching research. It combines practical, academic and language policy aspects for its main target group in language centres, and thoseinvolved in university language teaching and beyond
