Industry Trends in the Buildings Sector and Implications for Workforce Education
This presentation, provided by the Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center, is from the BEST Center's 2023 Annual Institute. This discussion provides "... a timely overview of industry and workforce trends in the closely linked sectors of building operations and Building Automation Systems." Presenters provide industry perspective on conditions of the industry, training gaps, and future projections. The discussion also highlights "technical advances and labor shortages in the BAS sector."This video runs 1:01:36 minutes in length
Implementing a Block-level Microgrid: The Intersection of Utility Policy, People, Tech and Economics
This presentation, provided by the Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center, is from the BEST Center's 2023 Annual Institute. This presentation is about the Ecoblock research project and "... developing a prototype EcoBlock in order to demonstrate the social, legal, financial and technical feasibility of renovating a residential block with efficiency, electrification, and shared ownership of a community solar microgrid." This presentation covers "... the process of working with PG&E to design the microgrid, helping the block residents form a governance structure to co-own the systems, prioritizing efficient retrofits, and figuring out how to pay for it all."This video runs 33:11 minutes in length
Municipal Solid Waste-to-Energy: Traditional Ecology and Environmental Justice
The Bioenergy Research and Education Bridge Program (BRIDGES) creates case study curriculum. BRIDGES is "focused on topical, authentic case study scenarios in the bioenergy field." The cases studies explore "... solutions for a more secure energy future using bioenergy technologies while addressing cultural responsiveness and issues surrounding diversity."This case study, from the U.S. Department of Energy, introduces "the challenges of managing municipal solid waste, opportunities for turning these products into usable energy sources, and exciting careers in the bioenergy field." During the activity, students are introduced to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho. Students assume the role of a chemical engineer at Idaho National Laboratory and assist the Tribal Youth Council in finding sustainable waste management solutions. The activity is designed for high school, community college, technical institute, or university courses and can be taught in-person or online.A .zip file includes all case study materials, such as a fact sheet, instructor guide, and supplemental materials. Users may download the materials for one or all four case studies
Recruiting Strategies Best Practices
In this video from Florida Advanced Technological Education Center for Manufacturing (FLATE), Michael Emigh highlights best practices for the recruitment and retention of students in manufacturing programs. Student numbers, social media, servant leadership, tips for success, and other topics are covered. The video recording runs 57:55 minutes in length
Compressors and Compressor Control (Part 1 of 2)
This video, published by Columbia Gorge Community College, is the first part of a two part lecture that provides a broad overview of pneumatic compressors and compressor control. In this part of the lecture, instructor Jim Pytel discusses the reciprocating piston compressor, the rotary vane compressor, the rotary screw compressor, and the scroll compressor. Extra attention is paid to the reciprocating piston compressor's two phases: suction and compression. This video runs 7:56 minutes in length. The second part of the lecture is available to view separately
Pneumatic Flow Control Methods (Part 2 of 2)
This video, published by Columbia Gorge Community College, is the second part of a two part lecture that examines meter-in and meter-out extension and contraction in pneumatic control. During the video, instructor Jim Pytel discusses applications of the methods featured in Pneumatic Flow Control Methods Part 1, including scenarios to practice determining whether meter-in or meter-out is more appropriate. This video runs 7:32 in length. The first part of the lecture is available to view separately
Flow Cytometry, Cell Therapy, and CGT Credentials
This webinar, published by InnovATEBIO, features two talks: one from Savita Prabhakar on a cell therapy and flow cytometry course included in the biotechnology program at Frederick Community College, and another from Lori Kelman on a certificate in Cell and Gene Therapy at Montgomery College. The biotechnology program at Frederick Community College provides specialized training to prepare students for employment in cell therapy. Savita goes over the program's goals and efforts to enroll more traditional and non-traditional students. Lori Kelman describes the different classes that form the CGT certificate at Montgomery College alongside the program's goals and recruitment efforts. This video runs 55:44 minutes in length
