Pseudo-Participation in Sustainable Development Programs: A Critical Reflection on Indonesian Local Cases

It is expected that the central government promotes sustainable development goals (SDGs) to enhance social participation and inclusivity in creating sustainable livelihoods at the village level. Although the Indonesian government has implemented policies to increase stakeholder awareness, there are still restrictions on inclusive participation, limiting the democratic process. This paper aims to analyse the promotion of SDGs in Terong Dlingo Village, Bantul Regency, Indonesia, focusing on regulatory aspects and social participation. The research adopts a case study approach using qualitative methods, including observations and in-depth interviews with local practitioners. The findings reveal that the SDGs village program is largely influenced by a top-down approach, despite efforts made by individuals, families, neighbourhoods, and other elements through surveys conducted on SDGs villages. In response, the researchers suggest that greater efforts are needed to effectively socialise and supervise the program to raise awareness among the local population regarding the benefits of SDGs village programs. It is recommended that an effective socialisation and communication strategy be implemented to encourage continuous local participation in this program

INTEGRATION OF DA'WAH AND LOCAL CULTURE:: An Analysis Of The Ritual Of Wiwit Mbako In Temanggung

This paper explores the integration of Islamic da'wah with local culture through the Wiwit Mbako ritual, a traditional agricultural ceremony practiced in Temanggung, Central Java. The central research question investigates how Islamic values are communicated and embodied within this cultural tradition, particularly in the context of rural agrarian communities. Employing a qualitative approach, the study analyzes the Wiwit Mbako ritual as both a cultural and religious practice, focusing on key elements such as prayers (doa), communal meals (selamatan), and social gatherings (gotong royong). Through these ritualistic components, the paper examines how Islamic teachings—such as gratitude, trust in Allah, and communal solidarity—are contextualized and disseminated within a familiar, culturally resonant framework. The findings highlight the dual role of the Wiwit Mbako ceremony, which not only serves as an expression of thanksgiving for a successful tobacco harvest but also as a medium for Islamic da'wah, promoting social harmony and religious devotion. The paper concludes that the Wiwit Mbako ritual not only reaffirms the community's dependence on divine will but also strengthens the role of da'wah by blending Islamic messages with local customs, thereby enhancing their relevance and impact within an agrarian society. This fusion of religion and culture underscores the adaptability of Islamic da'wah in rural Indonesia, making it a vital tool for preserving both cultural identity and religious values

Enhancing production activities in Desa Kolot, Cikalong Tasikmalaya is achieved through mutually beneficial partnerships among traders, exemplifying a community-driven empowerment model. This approach is introduced as a response to counter the negative perceptions associated with interventionist empowerment strategies implemented by head of village. The objective of this research is to uncover the interconnected pattern involving traders with ample capital collaborating with those lacking financial resources. Employing a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, the data analysis utilizes the patron-client theory. The study identifies the effectiveness of an empowerment model that optimizes the local potential of traditional snack production, deeply rooted in the community’s traditions. The empowerment mechanism is executed through voluntary connections established between major traders providing capital and smaller traders contributing culinary products. Small traders, as beneficiaries, get provision of materials, production tools, and skill enhancements offered by larger traders. Similarly, major traders benefit by gaining access to a market for the product of culinary, thereby expanding their customer base. These personal, voluntary, and tradition-bound relationships reflect dyadic connections characterized by an imbalance, potentially leading to domination and exploitation
