The “Kewpie Doll” was a mass produced doll by the K and K Toy Company who founded Cameo Dolls in the United States of America. “Kewpie Dolls” are dolls with closed mouths, side glancing eyes, and topknot hairdos. Similar to other massed produced dolls made for African-American children, this doll exhibits the same features as the original white “Kewpie Doll” but with darkened skin. This Porcelain Victorian period doll was created in the 1980’s. In the 1980’s there was a movement to create dolls that reflected the complex images of the African American community. This doll has a combination of features that may be found in a person from both the African and European Diasporas. The doll maintains the hair and clothing style that would have been found during the Victorian period of 1837-1901 but wears modern makeup. She is of a dark brown complexion, has dark red full lips, flowing black hair, and a medium body frame.
