The Selected Language Styles of African Americans in an Urban Environment

    Get PDF
The overall scope of this research is to define and explain the different styles of African American English. What are they and how do they affect the American society? The means by which many African Americans communicate is different from what American deems as standard American English (SAE). To this date, the voice of Black America has been categorizes as Black Dialect, African American Vernacular English, and Black English. Only until recently has the Black voice been regarded as Ebonics. Where did these language styles originate and why do we continue to speak it? Of course, there is nothing wrong with the language, but true enough there is a time and place for its use. For centuries, African Americans have had their own language, and, since its inception, has been passed down form generation to generation. Many authors have research and determined that his type of language is a form of slave talk. During slavery, Blacks had to have a way of communicating with each other so that the Massah could not understand what they were discussing. Thus, a type of dialect was created. Is this dialect of English something about which all should be concerned or is it just a generational product

Knowledge, Attitudes and Behavior of African American Undergraduate College Students Concerning Primary Preventative Health

    Get PDF
African Americans\u27 knowledge about primary preventive health and their attitudes toward primary preventive health influence their health behavior. Primary preventive health behavior is also affected by the individuals\u27 definition of health and the significance they ascribe to their health status. Attitudes toward primary preventive health determine whether health assessment is important in preventing disease. African Americans have a myriad of views about health and general well being. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between primary preventive health knowledge, primary preventive health attitudes and primary preventive health behavior in African American undergraduate students. A survey will be conducted to measure these aspects of primary preventive health. The population of the study will consist of 100 African American undergraduate students from Langston University, age eighteen and older

Effects of the Media on Parents and Teachers in Regard to Reading Aloud to Children

    Get PDF
Reading aloud to children has always been a part of classroom instruction, but it has been neglected in recent years because of time constraints in the classroom due to the requirement for accountability, competency testing, and other demands on time. The media, however, point out that reading aloud to children as young as one year of age will increase vocabulary, improve listening skills, and enhance ability to comprehend. It would appear that many parents and teachers hear the message but do not take this advice seriously. The purpose of this study is to establish whether the media has influenced the decisions of parents and teachers to read aloud to elementary grade children

An Analysis of the Calcium and Iron Intake of Langston University\u27s Track and Basketball Athletes

    Get PDF
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA\u27s ) reflect that the average healthy American aged 18-24 years should consume 1,200 mg of calcium daily and 10-12 mg and 15 mg of iron for men and women respectively. These RDA\u27s have not been adjusted for those persons involved in endurance sports. Studies by Telford (1992) and Clarkson (1992) show that endurance athletes suffer from calcium and iron deficiencies. There is a general assumption that athletic coaches are more concerned with the weigh in of 4 athletes than overall nutrient requirements. Positive nutrition education should be part of the overall training of athletes. Also, studies show that if individuals are well trained in what can be harmful to his or her body and what is helpful to the body, the general population will undergo behavior modification to prevent a deficiency conditions to worsen (Solomon, 1996). The general assumption is that once an individual knows what to feed the body that person will be conscious about the food he or she chooses. There are many in-depth studies that have assessed deficiencies and eating habits among collegiate endurance athletes; however, only a few of those have aimed to institute correctional processes for such deficiencies among college athletes. For this reason, these studies are all the more important. The purpose of this study is to determine the average daily intake of calcium and iron of Langston University track and basketball athletes and determine if they are at risk for nutrient-deficiency diseases. It is hoped that there will be follow up studies regarding nutrient intake and nutritional knowledge of both athletes and coaches and that the outcome of this study will alert university officials to the importance of implementing nutrition education as an overall part of athletic training. It is also hoped that the coaches will work closely with athletes to help them consider the ramifications of poor nutritional knowledge and misinformation. It is further hoped that as a result of this study Langston University track and basketball athletes will become enthusiastic about improving their overall health by making wise choices. The results will help in formulating further research in this area

An Examination of Ronald Edmonds\u27 Effective Schools Theory Applied to Various Grades in Two Demographically Different Oklahoma City Elementary Schools

    Get PDF
Effective schools research has been a key to the improvement of education for many urban school children, especially in large cities such as New York City and Chicago, Illinois. This research has revealed many different ideologies on helping a child learn, helping teachers teach, and giving administrators the tools to handle their schools more efficiently. Effective schools research also addresses parents and their involvement in the school system. One researcher who constantly pushed Effective Schools research is Dr. Ronald R. Edmonds. Edmonds, along with many other researchers helped to restructure the urban area schools in New York City and Michigan School systems. As a result, many school systems across the United 4 States have adopted a number of the ideas and methods that Edmonds and his counterparts have set into motion. This paper will attempt to examine two Oklahoma City elementary schools and apply the criteria of Edmonds\u27 Effective School research to school in the northeast and northwest Oklahoma City areas. Through interviews and observations of teachers and administrators and the observation of specific grade levels, it will be determined if Edmonds\u27 Effective School research theory is being used in these two demographically different Oklahoma City elementary schools and if the research is being used, to what extent

Impact of the Adoption of New Technology (FACNET) on a Minority-Owned Small Business in Colorado

    Get PDF
FACNET is a computer network that moves Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) from the Department of Defense (DoD) and federal buying sites to and from the certified Value Added Network (VAN). This study is conducted to answer the following questions about the use FACNET by XYZ Communications:1) Has FACNET helped reduce the cost of paper used in the business? 2) Has FACNET helped reduce the cost of long distance calls (telephone and fax) in the business? 3) Has FACNET helped reduce the cost of traveling expenses (hotel and transportation) in the business? 4)Has FACNET helped the business to conduct in a more efficient manner

The Determination of the Crystal Structure of 2-Methyl-2Methylacrylyl-Cyclohexanone- (1,5)-Diaxaspiro Mononeopentyl by X-Ray Christallography

    Get PDF
Cyclohexanone, the central component of the compound 2-methyl-2-methylacrylylcyclohexanone-( l,5)-diaxaspiro mononeopentyl (see figure on page 2), serves as a solvent for oil in piston type aircraft and in natural and vinyl resins. It is used in the production of crude rubber, waxes, fats, shellac and DDT and other pesticides. Cyclohexanone also is a part of the production of adipic acid, which is used to prepare nylon and is used to prepare cyclohexanone resins via condensation to enhance the adhesive properties of products like floor paints. Cyclohexanones are among the most accessible hydroaromatic derivatives and serve as the initial materials for the preparation of other compounds. Consequently, their preparation and properties have been extensively studied. The purpose of determining the crystal structure of 2- methyl-2-methylacrylyl-cyclohexanone-(l,5)-diaxaspiro mononeopentyl is to determine the influence of the spiro group on the cyclohexanone conformation and the positions (equatorial or axial) of the methyl and acrylyl groups. Cyclohexanones and subsequent derivatives can be prepared by various methods including the catalytic hydrogenation of phenols and dialkylanilines and the reduction of phenols with lithium dissolved in low-molecular weight amines. They are also prepared by the oxidation with alkaline permanganate or chromic acid or the catalytic (Cu or Ni) dehydrogenation of cyclohexanols or the oxidation of cyclohexene by reaction with palladium chloride in an aqueous acid
