    Using limits to Growth Modeling Software in an Environmental Physical Science Lab

    Although teaching of environmental physics and energy-related topics has increased in the last several years, only a small portion of that has been for non-science majors. Environmental physical science can be used to teach physics to non-science majors by applying learned physics concepts to current issues of interest such as climate change, population growth, sustainability, and renewable energy. The combination of the subject of the environment and a more student-centered learning environment improves the learning experience of the student. It increases the understanding non-science students have for physics. Teaching a physical science class with emphasis on the environment requires labs that engage the students. This lab, in particular, is intended as a final lab in the semester, which shows the students that all the environmental topics are intertwined and influence each other. It ties population growth, climate change, and resource use to show the effects they have on the economy, pollution, ecological footprint, and the welfare of humanity as a whole

    Looking Beyond the Dyad: How Transformational Leadership Affects Leader–Member Exchange Quality and Outcomes

    Despite the attention given to leadership and its understanding, the overwhelming number of approaches remain focused on one specific theory, resulting in minimal integration across theoretical borders. A leadership typology combining aspects of transformational leadership (TFL) with leader–member exchange (LMX) theory is presented in order to focus attention on the relationship between TFL behaviors and LMX outcomes. The typology demonstrates that LMX outcomes are contingent on context and develop within a richer pattern of behaviors, perceptions, and interactions than typically captured by a focus on dyadic interactions alone. LMX success thus can be seen as the result of a process that co-evolves on the basis of interactions between leaders and followers by means of specific practices and perceptions

    Wives’ empowerment and corporate financial risk in Chinese family firms

    We investigate the economic empowerment of founders’ wives in public Chinese family firms. We show that female cofounders hold higher voting rights when their firms are headquartered in regions where gender stereotypes rooted in local social norms are less prevalent. We also find that firms whose female cofounders wield greater influence, through higher voting rights and more leadership roles, retain more cash, use lower financial leverage, and have lower earnings risk. Our findings have implications on the extension of wives’ marital power in the household to corporate decision-making, as well as on gender difference in the context of risk preference

    Using Song to Teach Sight Words

    This research is about how a group of seven kindergarten classes used a short and straightforward song to recognize the following six common kindergarten sight words: on, off, up, us, no, & go. As a current music educator and former middle grades English teacher, I wanted to create an opportunity to establish cross-curricular connections in my music classroom. For this specific experiment, seven different classes, including General Education, Self-Contained Special Education, and English Language Learning classes, were selected. They were taught these six sight word songs through the “Sight Word Song.” I selected the sight words specifically because the students had not learned them previously in their homeroom classes; in theory, the selected sight words should have been unknown. Each class completed pretests and post-tests to show their growth and retention of the sight words learned using the “Sight Word Song.” All seven classes showed increased growth from their initial pretest to the final post-test. The student’s success is a result of having learned the “Sight Word Song.

    Shifting the Focus of Mental Health onto Graduate Students

    The transition from undergraduate to graduate school has the potential to increase demands among students surrounding coursework as well as fiscal responsibilities. The increased demand has the potential to alter the student’s physical activity which can negatively affect mental health. Physical exercise has the potential to reduce depression as well as negative mood symptoms, such as stress. Exercising also allows for boosting energy, improvement of sleep quality, and relaxation quality. The purpose of this research study was to examine the mental health of the graduate participants prior and after a two-week exercise regimen. The presented study focused on a two-week exercise period, assessing mental health via survey as well as possible barriers to exercise within the participants in Milledgeville, GA. It was hypothesized that the graduate students, who participated in the study were to have decreased levels of depression after completion of the physical activity regimen. A survey was created and analyzed to gather and report information surrounding mental health and physical activity. The survey included questions regarding demographics, a depression questionnaire from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) as well as barrier topics. A single-sample t test was utilized to compare the mean of the given Beck Depression score from pre-participation to post-participation. The findings from the study showed a 42.42% decrease in depressive symptoms throughout the two-week period. However, due to low participation, the results were found non-significant. The limitation of the study was due to the low sample size, therefore future studies would call for a larger sample size to meet the power needs for meaningful results. This study has given the opportunity for research to shift focus from undergraduate college students to graduate students to improve the focus of mental health disorders as well as physical activity

    Effect of Nest Box Temperature Mitigation Treatments on Nest Success and Nestling Condition in a Southeastern Population of Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis)

    Understanding behavioral responses of wildlife to climate change will be important as global temperatures continue to rise. Effects of rising temperatures may impact many species, including those that breed in seemingly protected nests, such as cavity nesting birds. Variations in nest cavity microclimate during the early development of secondary cavity nesting passerines may affect the growth of offspring and impact nesting success and survival. We examined the effect of two heat mitigation treatments (white exterior, n=11, and an internal foil heat shield, n=16) and nest box opening orientation (north, south, east, west) on internal nest box temperatures and the effect of internal nest box temperature on nest success and nestling development in a population of Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) at a restored grassland in central Georgia. We predicted that nest boxes receiving a heat treatment would experience cooler internal temperatures and fledge more offspring of higher body condition compared to control next boxes (n=23). Nest boxes were checked approximately every 3 to 4 days between April and mid-August 2020 and 2021 to record nesting activity and nestling measurements (tarsus and weight). Internal nest box temperature was recorded hourly between April 1st and June 28th using remote data loggers installed on the inside wall of each box. We calculated the maximum daily, minimum nightly and overall averages per nesting attempt and examined the relations of each variable with nestling weight and tarsus length to test the effect of temperature on nest success. White paint applied to the exterior of nest boxes was effective in producing cooler thermal environments compared to control and foil boxes. However, both painted nest boxes and boxes that experienced cooler nightly low temperatures were less likely to be successful. This study highlight the importance of investigating species-specific responses to increasing temperatures before implementing wide-scale habitat modifications

    In this literature review, I reflect on the strategies that are available to every middle school chorus teacher, and what they should use when struggling with recruiting new students as well as retaining students throughout a middle school choral program. Recruitment and retention are not uncommon topics among music educators, and it is important to understand which strategies would work best for each program. When recruiting students to join chorus, it is imperative to focus on relationships with administration, parents, feeder schools, the community, and students. These strategies align with retaining students in the program as well since they work together throughout the year. It is essential to grow these relationships and adapt repertoire and curriculum to each group of students taught. In conclusion by using these strategies, middle school chorus teachers can grow their program and gain support from the school

    Tracking the Source of Helicobacter pylori in Watersheds of San Juan, Puerto Rico

    Helicobacter pylori is a pathogenic bacterium that infects more than half of the world’s population. The large number of H. pylori infections in Puerto Rico could be related to the waterborne transmission of the pathogen. While the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) system is home to over three million people, water quality studies in this area of Puerto Rico are lacking. The goal of this study is to determine seasonal and yearly (2020-2021) shifts and relationships between the presence of H. pylori and host-specific (human and dog) Bacteroides in streams that flow through the northern coastal zone of Puerto Rico and streams that drain into the SBJE waters using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) methods and microbial source tracking (MST) techniques. The 16s rRNA gene fragment of H. pylori was detected in twenty-nine (16.86%) of the 172 water samples collected over the two-year period with higher detection rates in the wet seasons (17.65%) than the dry seasons (16.09%). Microbial source tracking of human- and dog-specific Bacteroides in H. pylori positive samples over the two-year period resulted in equal detection rates (51.72%) of both host sources. Human- and dog-specific Bacteroides were detected in eighty-three (48.26%) and seventy-six (44.19%) of the 172 samples collected, respectively. A total of eleven samples were positive for all three markers (H. pylori, human, dog). Five of these samples were collected during the 2020 sampling event from two sample sites at subbasin Juan Méndez and one sample site from the Blasina, Rio Piedras Norte, and Dona Ana subbasins. The remaining six samples were collected during the 2021 sampling event from two sample sites located at the Dona Ana subbasin, and one sample site from subbasins Juan Méndez, Río Herrera, Blasina, and Río Canovanillas
