Untitled: Detail 2 2022 Thread on painted board My work consists of three, large scale, thread pieces that depict light overcoming darkness. I use the layering of dark and light string on gesso board to create contrast, texture, depth, and liveliness within each piece. As communicated in my work, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness is overcome.https://kb.gcsu.edu/abundance/1029/thumbnail.jp

Potential’s Perspective Detail 2 Dimensions variable Dimensions variable2022 By using printmaking as well as digital printing, I will compare people to keys and containers. In combining these themes, I have created three strong black and white images along with a colored pattern. The three images will be printed onto paper using linoleum blocks and print screens, then framed and mounted atop sheets of personally designed wallpaper. I plan to print on repositionable paper for the wallpaper on the central wall and below the windows. On the outer walls, I will digitally print my pattern onto thin and flowy paper which will cascade down onto the floor of MoFA.https://kb.gcsu.edu/abundance/1004/thumbnail.jp

Reclamation: The Crown of African American Identity

    Get PDF
African American voices have been the main sources of influence on society and culture. For this reason, it is important that African Americans speak up and reclaim their voices. Not only are their voices important, but the stories that lie behind the voices are what need to be amplified. With the application of postcolonial theory, this thesis takes modern stories located in North America depicting racist behavior towards African Americans from the year 1970 to present-day New York City in order to fully amplify the process of social struggle. As these narratives are passed down through generations serving as a platform for understanding their identity, the realization of reclamation is present within the African American community. Reclamation is the reclaiming of one’s identity and true state of being. This thesis argues that African Americans reject the colonization mindset and reclaim their identity of voice and culture through verbal and nonverbal communication. With the assistance of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk and Regina Taylor’s Crowns, we are given permission to view through the lens of reclamation and identity in order to fully understand what it means for African Americans to reclaim identity and culture

Implementing an Evidence-Based Preceptor Program to Improve the Orientation Process

This Quality Improvement project conducted at a 245-bed acute care hospital in the southeastern United States, aimed to develop an evidence-based preceptor program to improve retention rates. Specific goals were to create a positive experience for preceptors and preceptees by improving the training, support, and recognition. Secondary goal was to increase the number of trained preceptors. The training focused on safe practice, employee satisfaction, and self-efficacy. Retention data supplied by HR for 2020 showed increasing trend of nursing turnover with a 33% total nursing turnover, and 50.25% turnover rate for nurses with less than three years of experience. A 2019 Stay Survey administered to all newly employed nurses, graded attitudes regarding the facility on a 5-point Likert scale, with 1 indicating strongly disagree, 2 indicating disagree, 3 indicating neither disagree or agree, 4 indicating agree, and 5 indicating strongly agree. Analysis of data revealed scores below the benchmark (M 4.0) in a number of critical areas: intent to stay (M 3.21), job expectations, ability to perform integral work functions, and nursing satisfaction. During the initial implementation, 10 preceptor-preceptee pairs participated and evaluated the effect of the program on self-efficacy, intent to stay and preceptor experience and engagement. The results showed no statistically significant difference pre and post intervention in any category except preceptor intent to stay, which decreased from baseline (M 13, SD 13.4) to 1-month post (M 6.74, SD 4.7) (Z = -2.04, p = .041). Preceptee intent to stay (in years) did indicate clinical significance with an increase from baseline (M 7.8) to 1-month post (M 9.1). After participating in the program and finishing the orientation project, it appears that preceptees intent to stay increased by slightly more than 1 year, which may be attributed to participation in the program, or the preceptee’s comfort level and assimilation in the organization. This project was implemented during the rapidly rising Covid Omicron variant (October to December 2021) which placed significant strain on the healthcare system. Preceptors and preceptees reported high total self-efficacy scores at baseline and 1-month. All preceptors reported a desire and sense of duty to continue precepting

High-frequency accelerometer recording of key predatory behaviors in vipers: validation and case study with Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus)

High-frequency accelerometer recording of key predatory behaviors in vipers: validation and case study with Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) Morgan Thompson, Richard H. Adams, Anna F. Tipton, and Dominic L. DeSantis Tri-axial accelerometers (ACTs) are becoming increasingly common in studies of animal behavior wherein direct observation of subjects in nature is constrained or impossible. ACTs are small (\u3c 1 g) piezo-electric (spring-like) sensors that measure three-dimensional acceleration (upward, downward, and side-to-side) derived from subject motion. When leveraged with advanced machine learning techniques, these data can enable precise automated classification of a wide range of movement-mediated behaviors. Until recently, ACTs were largely reserved for larger-bodied organisms or those most amenable to the temporary external attachment of devices. Ongoing ACT miniaturization has now expanded the breadth of organisms amenable to these methods. This project aims to expand on a recently developed framework for ACT monitoring in wild-ranging snakes, a group that has been mostly overlooked in biologging applications. We are currently conducting extensive captive validation trials for robust model training and testing to enable classification of predatory behaviors, including striking and ingestion of prey items, in Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus). Following captive validation, we will translate this method to the field with a population of C. horridus in the lower Piedmont of middle Georgia to evaluate the efficacy of externally attached ACTs for remote and continuous monitoring of predatory behaviors by wild-ranging vipers. We envision validation of this technique carrying significant conservation and management implications; real-time monitoring of foraging efficiency in the field opens the door to improved interpretation of the causes and consequences of variation in individual behavior and performance, and its ultimate effects on population trajectories

Who moves in vulnerable Caribbean neighborhoods? Positive deviance for physical activity: Findings from the Jamaica health and Lifestyle Survey 2017 (JHLS III)

    No full text
Decreased physical activity (PA) has been associated with residents living in neighborhoods perceived as being disordered or having high crime levels. What is unknown are the characteristics of individuals who engage in moderate to vigorous levels of PA (MVPA) despite living in these vulnerable neighborhoods, or who may be referred to as positive deviants (PD). We examined the factors associated with PD for PA among Jamaicans. Between 2016 and 2017 the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey, a cross-sectional nationally representative survey (n = 2807), was conducted on individuals aged 15 years and older. Regression analyses were performed to identify associations with PD, defined using engagement in MVPA among persons living in vulnerable neighborhoods (N = 1710). Being female (odds ratio [OR]a = 0.64 (0.48, 0.86); p = 0.003), obese while living in an urban area (ORa = 0.39; 95 % CI = 0.26, 0.59; p \u3c 0.0001), unemployed (ORa = 0.53; 95 % CI = 0.39, 0.73; p \u3c 0.0001), or a student (ORa = 0.62; 95 % CI = 0.39, 0.98); p = 0.041) was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of PD, while having a personal medical history of at least one chronic disease significantly increased likelihood (ORa = 1.43; 95 % CI = 1.08, 1.90; p = 0.014). Taking a PD approach may be one angle to consider in trying to determine what is working and for whom, so that this may be harnessed in policy, prevention and intervention programming to increase PA

Looking good by doing good: CEO attractiveness and corporate philanthropy

    No full text
We investigate the effect of male corporate managers\u27 physical appearance—classified into unattractive, average-looking, and attractive—on the philanthropic decisions of Chinese listed firms. We find that compared to average-looking managers, those who rated as attractive do not engage more actively in corporate donations. On the contrary, the probability of donating is approximately 5% higher for unattractive managers than for average-looking managers; further, unattractive managers donate 95% more in charitable giving. To explain these findings, we propose a psychological channel through which physical appearance may influence male managers\u27 charitable donations: Because altruistic behaviors may aggrandize individuals, managers conscious of deficits in their own physical attractiveness may engage in prosocial behavior to increase their attractiveness in the eyes of others. We find consistent evidence that the effect of managers\u27 unattractiveness on philanthropic decisions is stronger in firms with weaker corporate governance; further, we find that the positive impact of corporate donation on financial performance observed in firms led by attractive and average-looking managers is substantially weaker in those firms led by unattractive managers

Close Major-merger Pairs at z = 0: Bulge-to-total Ratio and Star Formation Enhancement

    No full text
We present a study of the bulge-to-total ratio (B/T) of a Ks-band-selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIR), based on two-dimensional decompositions of SDSS r-band images with galfit. We investigate the dependence of the interaction-induced specific star formation rate enhancement (sSFRenh) on the B/T ratio, and the effects of this dependence on the differences between star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in spiral+spiral (S+S) and spiral+elliptical (S+E) pairs. Of all the 132 spiral galaxies in H-KPAIR, the 44 in S+E pairs show higher B/T than those in the 44 S+S pairs, with means of B/T = 0.35 ± 0.05 and B/T = 0.26 ± 0.03, respectively. There is a strong negative dependence of sSFRenh on the B/T ratio, and only paired SFGs with B/T \u3c 0.3 show significant (\u3e5σ) enhancement. Paired SFGs in S+S pairs show a similar trend, and many disky SFGs (B/T \u3c 0.1) in S+S pairs have strong sSFR enhancements (sSFRenh \u3e 0.7 dex). For SFGs in S+E pairs, the sSFR has no clear B/T dependence, nor any significant enhancement in any B/T bin. Disky SFGs in S+S pairs show significant (\u3e4σ) enhancement in molecular gas content ( M H 2 / M star ), while SFGs in S+E pairs have no such enhancement in any B/T bin. No significant enhancement of the total gas content (M gas/M star) is found in any B/T bin for paired galaxies. The star formation efficiency of either the total gas (SFEgas = SFR/M gas) or molecular gas ( SFE H 2 = SFR / M H 2 ) does not depend on the B/T ratio. The only significant (\u3e 4σ) SFE enhancement found for paired SFGs is the SFEgas for disky SFGs in S+S pairs

Detection of Campylobacter jejuni Presence in Trinidad’s Aquatic Environments

    No full text
Water quality is a growing concern throughout the developing world and the effects of water pollution can be both harmful and costly. Increasing levels of fecal pollution and associated waterborne pathogens pose a potential economic constraint and hardship for Caribbean islands as their economies primarily depend on a thriving coastal tourism industry. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter jejuni, a pathogenic bacterium that is known to cause gastroenteritis in humans, on the island of Trinidad, where fecal contamination at public beaches is not routinely monitored. A total of 58 water samples were collected from 35 sampling sites, including 23 marine and 12 freshwater locations. DNA was extracted from each sample and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis using endpoint assays was used to test for the presence of Campylobacter jejuni. C. jejuni was detected in over 41% of the sites using the cpn60 target gene. The high incidence of fecal pollution and pathogenic bacteria at the public beaches represents a serious public health risk on the island and highlights the challenges facing developing countries that rely on tourism
