Investigating Diatom Community Dynamics in Tobler Creek: A Recovering Agricultural Stream on Milledgeville’s Beloved Andalusia Farm
No full textProtecting the biological and ecological integrity is one of the major goals of the Clean Water Act. Agricultural processes can degrade stream ecosystem health by introducing nutrients, causing tolerant taxa to proliferate and outcompete sensitive taxa. Reference streams serve as comparisons to streams with questionable ecological status, with reference criteria being set based off of the 25th percentile of streams per ecoregion. Middle Georgia falls within region IV and ecoregion IX, with criteria set for total phosphorus and total nitrogen as 0.037 mg/L and 0.69 mg/L, respectively. Diatoms, a group of algae with cell walls composed of glass, serve as sensitive bioindicators which respond to varying environmental conditions. In this study, our study site is Tobler Creek, on the site of Andalusia Farm. Andalusia Farm served as a 41- hectares cotton plantation to cattle farm to hay farm and finally was donated as a museum in 1980. In 2022, it was declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Parks Services. Based on water quality monitoring in 2011, Tobler Creek did not meet reference criteria for nutrients, but did in 2022. Diatom community metrics showed significant increase in water quality in response to nutrient recovery. Additionally, diatom-specific metrics indicated increase of tolerant taxa to degradation driven by sedimentation. While limiting nutrients can improve trophic status of a stream, other factors like soil erosion can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems

We establish a more general result holds with the condition |an| = 1 relaxed but with finitely many exceptions. A proof is given showing that also, in some sense, the more general result is best possible

Leucothoe mucifibrosa sp. nov., collected from Belize, may represent a member of the “Paraleucothoe” group with a specific sponge host preference. Leucothoe darthvaderi sp. nov., collected from South Florida, is part of the Leucothoe spinicarpa species complex and has demonstrated a shift in host preference over time, possibly associated with environmental perturbances

We consider both the cases of white noise and colored noise. Our results extend the main results in Foondun [12] to fractional Laplacian as well as higher dimensional cases
Restraining the Senses and Relations of Care
No full textThis article puts late Vedic ritual and the renouncer and householder traditions of early South Asia into dialogue in a new way, by thinking about restraining the senses through the etic lens of regimes of care. Guiding questions in this study are: (1) How do regimes of care help us understand the conceptual interface of violence, restraint, purity and community? (2) How do shifting relations of care help us understand conceptual change over time? Finally, (3) how does conceptual change help us speculate productively about changes in relations of care? The clear thematic bifurcation in the texts will recapitulate what Nathan McGovern has termed a ‘broad, trans-sectarian tension between renunciate and householder lifestyles’
The effects of baby massage on physical development of infant
No full textStudies have shown that baby massage help infants and children grow up healthier physically and mentally. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of baby massage on infants\u27 body weight, length, head circumference, chest circumference, food intake, and excretion. The subjects of this study were healthy infants of age 0 to 18 months recruited from the daycare center. A total of 30 participants were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, with 15 infants, respectively. The parents of the experimental group took an baby massage course for one hour each week for four consecutive weeks, and the parents performed baby massages for their infants during the study period, while the parents of the control group did not receive any course and thus did not massage their infants. The researchers measured the height, weight, head circumferences, and bust circumferences of the participating infants. The parents were asked to fill out the questionnaire and to provide their baby\u27s physical condition before the first week and after the end of the fourth week of the massage. After the baby massage period, the average daily intake of non-staple foods in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group, but no significant differences were found in the weight, length, head, and bust circumferences, average daily milk intake, number of urination and stool
Secure Communication with Physical Layer Coding Scheme
No full textFor a secure communication, it enables the destination could successfully release the authentic information from the sender. At the meantime, a secure system protects the transmitted information from the eavesdroppers. Traditionally, the encryption, authorization and authentication schemes could be employed for protecting the eavesdroppers. However, the unexpected attacks have been continuously developed. It could not be avoided for the undesired attacks. According to Shannon\u27s perfect communication, there exists an error-free cryptogram that could protect for the attacker. Hence, based on the secrecy rate, it is expected that the secure communication could be practical with physical-layer coding scheme. Besides, the coding scheme is not only to obtain a critical level of security, but also to achieve a lower decoding error. For a security concern, increasing the secrecy rate leads a higher level of security ability. However, it might suffer the system performance without bandwidth efficiency. Hence, the tradeoff between the security level and coding rate is important to lead a secure communication
Navigating the Interdisciplinary Archipelago: The Scholarship of Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning

Theoretical explorations of the relationship of the disciplines to interdisciplinarity are crucial to the scholarship of inter-disciplinary teaching and learning, because, as Newell has pointed out, the traditional disciplines are the foundation of interdisciplinary work. The literature on effective interdisciplinary teaching focuses in part on how much preparation in the disciplines is necessary before both faculty and students alike engage in interdisciplinary work. Many authors also emphasize interdisciplinary teaching as an effective form of faculty development and have also not neglected the crucial role of institutional reform that must often accompany implementation of interdisciplinary programs. Like the scholarship of teaching, a dedicated corps of enthusiastic practitioners who were both promoting new ideas and simultaneously developing a set of shared practices and perspectives created interdisciplinary studies programs
