Confirming a strong disconnection between academe and the health care institutions in terms of quantity and content of research

    Get PDF
As there is a disparity in creation of research in the academe and utilization of research knowledge, the necessity to ascertain the phenomenon is warranted as the professional practice is being challenged. Hence, this descriptive qualitative research aims to confirm the strong disconnection that exists between the health research production in the academe and the research utilization by the health care institutions in terms of both quantity and content of the researches. I revealed that the development of the research agenda serve as the foundation crucial in the transfer of knowledge. In addition, the production of research in the academe varies with the utilization among health care professionals in the health care institution. The variation can be described in terms of the quantity and content of research from the academe which can be further explained to the fact that students are producing researches purely for academic purposes only to finish a degree without aiming for utilization. Also, most research information they utilized come from sources other than what the graduate- students in the academe are producing. Thus, this research primarily confirms the strong disconnection that exists between the health production in the higher education institutions and the research utilization by the health care professionals in the health care institutions

    Philosophical bases of research methods

    Get PDF
This narrative review examined the philosophical bases of research methods in terms of: (1) ontology; (2) epistemology; (3) axiology; and (3) methodology. It explored the diversities and similarities between paradigms. Three search strategies were observed including: (1) data search for published research; (2) public engine and manual search; and (3) stakeholders input. Subthemes under ontological assumptions are: (1) singular vs. plural reality; (2) empirical vs. subjective reality; (3) scientific vs. sensuous reality; (4) when the singularity and plurality of reality converge; (5) definitive vs. subjective truth; (6) continuum versus polarity; (7) what really is real; (8) truth, reality and knowledge; and (9) seeing the truth and reality of an objective/subjective from a different perspective. Subthemes under axiological assumptions are: (1) fact-value divide/dichotomy; and (2) ethics. Subthemes under methodological assumptions are: (1) scientific versus naturalism: hard versus soft science; (2) convergence and divergence; (3) linearity is only in the books and not practice; (4) hard or easy; (5) theory, frameworks and literature review; (6) nonstatistical approaches in positivistic approaches; and (7) complementarity. The focus of the lens is guided by philosophical stances. Each paradigm seeks truth, reality and knowledge. Though quantitative inquiry claimed objectivity and qualitative inquiry claim subjectivity, both unconsciously observe the same processes. The division is a continuum that delights its deficiencies. It is when divergence coverges

Evaluation on compensation packages of employees in the tourism sector

    Get PDF
The retention of the employees depends on the quality of the employees’ compensation. However, there are factors affecting the retention of the employees such as the culture of the company and especially the labor relation between the employees and the employers and the compensation package as well. The motivation of employee can be determined by their performance through giving recognition and any other form like benefits and incentives or insurances. The method we used in this study is quantitative, because it involves the collection of numerical data in order to explain, predict and control the current event, condition or situation. This study was conducted within the tourism sector in Cebu City. The study being conducted reveals that employees were just contented of their compensation package though it’s just limited according to their existence. Such as the culture of the company and especially the labor relation between the employees and employers as well. The motive in the tourism sector has cheaper and less benefits. This study aims to further explain the compensation packages offered in the tourism sector and some issues related to compensation packages. We, the researchers would like to provide, through this study about the information of the compensation packages that would lead to realization of their own stand in terms about compensation packages in tourism sector. This study is very important and can help to the tourism graduates. This would help them analyze the benefit package when entering into the world of tourism sector

    Intelligence and video games

    Get PDF
This study aims to determine describe the perceived relationship between video games and intelligence among the selected individuals. The study makes use of the video game “BRAIN AGE” as one of the tools of the research. Responses of the informants showed that video games can slightly contribute to mental development and a new theory was developed the “Dublin game attention theory” where as a person grows older his time to attention span for playing video games becomes more shorter but does not necessarily reflect a loss of interest in the gaming hobby

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the content of the selected Cebuano folklore which primarily depicts the original values of the Filipinos. This study used the interpretative-appreciative-analytical method in examining the values delineated in Cebuano Folklore. The tools used for interpretation and analysis were gathered from selected areas in Cebu. The study identified the common Filipino values that reflect the ideal way on how Filipinos value family, community, and profession. These original values are strongly intuited and expectedly gleaned in the four categories of folklore being studied such as: (a) folktales; (b) folksongs; (c) riddles; and (d) sayuings/proverbs

Inhibitory activity of Plumeria rubra (Kalachuchi), Ipomea quatica (Kangkong), Mimosa pudica (Makahiya), Euphorbia hirta (Gatas-Gatas) and Coleus aromaticus (Oregano) plant extracts against Staphylococcus aureus coagulase production

    Get PDF
The leaf extracts of P. rubra (Kalachuchi), I. aquatica (Kangkong), M. pudica (Makahiya), E. hirta (Gatas-Gatas), and C. aromaticus (Oregano) were screened for inhibitory activity against coagulase production of S. aureus. The Tube Coagulase Test and Colony Count were used for the inhibitory assay. The E. hirta (Gatas-Gatas), and C. aromaticus (Oregano) were found to have inhibitory activity against S. aureus coagulase production both having a mean grade level of 1 and a mean colony count of 193.33 and 229.67, respectively. However, the in vitro tests conducted do not, in any way, stimulate the complexity of the human body. Instead, these results warrant the E. hirta (Gatas-Gatas) and C. aromaticus (Oregano) plant extracts to further anti-coagulase investigation

Extent of knowledge on falls by staff nurses in Baguio-Benguet healthcare settings

    Get PDF
The study aimed to determine the extent of knowledge on falls by staff nurses in Baguio- Benguet health care settings. As a descriptive type of research, it necessitates a structured type of questionnaire as data gathering tool. The researchers surveyed 120 staff nurses as respondents using the nonprobability convenience sampling method and the analysis make use of means and t-test. Through this study, the researchers were able to formulate a module on falls, its prevention and management in order to enrich the knowledge of the staff nurses regarding falls. In addition, the researchers recommend that there ought to be a manual about fall prevention and management programs in every hospital. &nbsp

Tourist arrivals and climate risk indices

    Get PDF
The study demonstrates the use of methods associated with fractal statistics in the analysis of data roughness of the climate risk condition measured by a Global Climate Risk Index among countries in the world as this induce a subsequent ruggedness in the number of international tourist arrivals in the different countries. Results reveal that there is a considerable amount of unevenness in the climate risk conditions of the countries studied and that such irregularities occur more apparently in the less stable and more risky nations. This finding implies that the weather patterns situation of a country, specifically climate risk condition, has considerable effects on international tourist arrival. Current findings lend support that changing climate and weather patterns at tourist destinations and tourist generating countries can significantly affect the tourists travel decisions. Theoretical implications of the study are discussed later in the study

The study used descriptive method which is designed and enabled the researches to describe or present the picture of  phenomena under investigation. Descriptive research focuses on individual subjects and goes into great dept and detail in describing them that contains knowledge about past or present activities of producing or using a service but does not much help for modifying it to correspond better to latest requirement. The findings of the study show that the SSG office of the University of the Visayas should restore a structural organization and functions based on the proposal for improvement and should align with the philosophy and mission of the institution.
