Combination of the Modified Loop Technique and De Vega Annuloplasty in Dogs with Mitral Regurgitation
Background: Detailed surgical techniques for treating canine mitral regurgitation have not been previously reported. Method: This case series included six consecutive client-owned dogs with mitral regurgitation. All dogs underwent a combined protocol, including the modified loop technique and De Vega annuloplasty (MODEL surgery), in 2021. Artificial loops covering 80% of the length of the strut chordae tendineae were used for chordal replacement. Mitral annuloplasty was subjectively performed, targeting the circumference of the septal leaflet. Results: The breeds were Chihuahua-mixed breed, Spitz, Pomeranian, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Chihuahua, with average ages and weights of 11.4 ± 2.3 years and 5.49 ± 2.98 kg, respectively. The aortic cross-clamp, pumping, and surgery times were 64.0 ± 7.5 min, 168.5 ± 39.1 min, and 321.0 ± 53.1 min, respectively. After MODEL surgery, left atrial-to-aortic ratios significantly decreased from 2.20 ± 0.18 to 1.26 ± 0.22 (p < 0.01), and left ventricular end-diastolic internal diameter normalized to body weight significantly decreased from 2.03 ± 0.26 to 1.48 ± 0.20 (p < 0.01). In all cases, the clinical signs disappeared or improved significantly. Conclusions: MODEL surgery increased mitral valve coaptation, normalized heart sizes, and significantly improved clinical signs in dogs with mitral regurgitation.journal articl
Opinions of Teacher Training Course Students about Participatory Technology Assessment
市民参加型テクノロジー・アセスメント(市民参加型手法)に対して人々がどのような 意識を持つかについて,以前に相模原市民を対象とした調査結果を報告した(福井 2012)。さらに,学生(社会学部)に対する調査も後に行い,前者と比較しながら報告した(福井 2015)。これら一連の意識調査に関連して,教職課程の学生に対する調査も行っていたものの,結果について未報告であったため,本稿において報告を行った。回答者の属性や総数が異なるにもかかわらず,概ね3回の調査結果で同様の傾向が得られたということが確認できた。安易な一般化は慎むべきだが,異なる調査結果で概ね同様の傾向が得られたことから,市民参加型テクノロジー・アセスメントに関する人々の意識について,本稿及び上記の報告結果は,国内の多くの人々の意識を概ね捉えていると推察できる。journal articl
A cat with myelodysplastic syndrome by administration of the methylation inhibitor Azacytidine
A 5-year-old female cat with nonregenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), since peripheral blood and bone marrow (BM) examination revealed various dysplasias and a blast ratio of 19%. Chemotherapy with azacytidine (AZA; 70-35 mg/m2, 3-5 days, three cycles) and treatment with prednisolone, antibiotics, and vitamin K2, and blood transfusion were performed. On day 106, blast cells and dysplasia had decreased in the BM, and the cat remained alive for at least 1,474 days. This report is the first on feline MDS treated with AZA, suggesting appropriate drug dosage, interval and effective combination should be investigated and the pharmacological and cell biological mechanisms needs to be elucidated in the future.journal articl
Spillover and spillback risks of ectoparasites by an invasive squirrel Callosciurus erythraeus in Kanto region of Japan
Invasive organisms can alter host-parasite relationships in a given ecosystem by spreading exotic parasites and/or becoming a new reservoir for native ones. Since these problems affect management programs of the invasive host organisms, it is necessary to monitor them individually. The Pallas's squirrel Callosciurus erythraeus is an invasive arboreal mammal introduced into Japan that threatens to exacerbate ecological and public health problems by spreading native and exotic parasites. However, only limited surveys have been available especially for ectoparasites, using the traditional combing method in which the possibility of oversight is inherent. Here, we evaluated the ectoparasite occurrences in Kanto region of Japan, using the whole-shaving method as an alternative approach. As a result of examining 52 hosts from two invaded districts (Yokohama and Yokosuka), chigger mites (Leptotrombidium spp.) and fleas (Ceratophyllus anisus and Ceratophyllus indages indages) were newly recovered in addition to the previously reported tick (Haemaphysalis flava) and exotic lice (Enderleinellus kumadai and Neophaematoponis callosciuri). The parasite burdens were higher in Yokosuka and in male host individuals, affecting infracommunity richness and composition. Our findings on the variety of native and exotic ectoparasites, at higher abundances in some cases than previously known, may suggest that both the spillover and spillback risks need to be adjusted upwards.journal articl
Prediction of 24-h and 6-h Periods before Calving Using a Multimodal Tail-Attached Device Equipped with a Thermistor and 3-Axis Accelerometer through Supervised Machine Learning
In this study, we developed calving prediction models for 24-h and 6-h periods before calving using data on physiological (tail skin temperature) and behavioral (activity intensity, lying time, posture change, and tail raising) parameters obtained using a multimodal tail-attached device (tail sensor). The efficiencies of the models were validated under tethering (tie-stall) and untethering (free-stall and individual pen) conditions. Data were collected from 33 and 30 pregnant cattle under tethering and untethering conditions, respectively, from approximately 15 days before the expected calving date. Based on pre-calving changes, 40 features (8 physiological and 32 behavioral) were extracted from the sensor data, and one non-sensor-based feature (days to the expected calving date) was added to develop models using a support vector machine. Cross-validation showed that calving within the next 24 h under tethering and untethering conditions was predicted with a sensitivity of 97% and 93% and precision of 80% and 76%, respectively, while calving within the next 6 h was predicted with a sensitivity of 91% and 90% and precision of 88% and 90%, respectively. Calving prediction models based on the tail sensor data with supervised machine learning have the potential to achieve effective calving prediction, irrespective of the cattle housing conditions.journal articl
DNA Damage Response Regulation by Histone Ubiquitination
Cells are constantly exposed to numerous genotoxic stresses that induce DNA damage. DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are among the most serious damages and should be systematically repaired to preserve genomic integrity. The efficiency of repair is closely associated with chromatin structure, which is regulated by posttranslational modifications of histones, including ubiquitination. Recent evidence shows crosstalk between histone ubiquitination and DNA damage responses, suggesting an integrated model for the systematic regulation of DNA repair. There are two major pathways for DSB repair, viz., nonhomologous end joining and homologous recombination, and the choice of the pathway is partially controlled by posttranslational modifications of histones, including ubiquitination. Histone ubiquitination changes chromatin structure in the vicinity of DSBs and serves as a platform to select and recruit repair proteins; the removal of these modifications by deubiquitinating enzymes suppresses the recruitment of repair proteins and promotes the convergence of repair reactions. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the DNA damage response regulated by histone ubiquitination in response to DSBs.journal articl
Repeated-Dose Pharmacodynamics of Pimobendan in Healthy Cats
The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of repeated and multiple-dose pimobendan on cardiac systolic function and the correlations between changes in cardiac systolic function and plasma concentrations of pimobendan and O-desmethylpimobendan (ODMP). Five clinically healthy cats were subjected to four different medication protocols for 14 days, with a washout period of at least 1 month between each protocol. The protocols were pimobendan 0.5 mg/kg q12h (high dosage [HD] group); pimobendan 0.25 mg/kg q12h (standard dosage [SD] group); pimobendan 0.125 mg/kg q12h (low dosage group); and Biofermin R, one tablet q12h (placebo group). Echocardiography and measurement of plasma concentrations of pimobendan and ODMP were performed prior to medication administration (baseline) and 20, 40, 60, 120, 240, 360, and 480 min after administration, and the correlation between the changes in cardiac systolic function and plasma concentration of pimobendan, ODMP, or the sum of both were examined. The cardiac systolic function increased in the HD and SD groups, and there were significant correlations between the lateral peak systolic myocardial velocity (S′) changes and plasma pimobendan, plasma ODMP, and the sum of both. Repeated doses of pimobendan in healthy cats increased cardiac systolic function, and there were significant correlations between cardiac function and plasma concentrations of pimobendan and ODMP. Evaluation of the air sac volume of penguins with respiratory diseases using computed tomography
Captive penguins with respiratory diseases exhibit advanced pathological conditions upon the appearance of clinical signs. Therefore, the successful treatment of respiratory diseases remains difficult after the onset of clinical signs, leading to high mortality rates. In this study, we measured air sac volume using computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the respiratory condition of penguins. In a regular quarterly health checkup, blood samples were collected from 45 penguins housed at an aquarium in Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 12 penguins with abnormal blood parameters underwent CT. The air sac volumes were calculated in three-dimensional CT, and the scatter plots of the air sac volumes and body weights were analyzed. No correlation was found between the air sac volume and body weight in both the gentoo and king penguins. Two gentoo penguins with infiltration and one king penguin with multiple nodules on CT were tentatively diagnosed with aspergillosis and treated with oral administration of itraconazole. Follow-up CT examination was performed until the outcome: healed or died. The mean air sac volumes of the two gentoo penguins, which recovered after treatment, increased from 273.9 and 329.0 cm3 before healing to 449.0 and 424.6 cm3 after healing, respectively. Meanwhile, the air sac volume of the king penguin, which subsequently died, decreased from 1,556.9 to 920.6 cm3 despite treatment. Changes of the air sac volume in the same individual could be useful for evaluating the respiratory condition of penguins.journal articl
Detection of Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures in Dogs With a Seizure Detection System Established Using Acceleration Data and the Mahalanobis Distance: A Preliminary Study
Caregivers of dogs with epilepsy experience severe stress due to unpredictable seizures. Hence, they feel the need for a better management strategy. A seizure detection system (SDS), which can identify seizures and provide notifications to caregivers immediately, is required to address this issue. The current study aimed to establish a wearable automatic SDS using acceleration data and the Mahalanobis distance and to preliminarily investigate its feasibility among dogs. A generalized tonic–clonic seizure (GTCS) was targeted because it is the most common type of seizure and can have serious consequences (i.e., status epilepticus). This study comprised three phases. First, the reference datasets of epileptic and non-epileptic activities were established using acceleration data of GTCSs in 3 dogs and daily activities in 27 dogs. Second, the GTCS-detecting algorithm was created using the reference datasets and was validated using other acceleration data of GTCSs in 4 epileptic dogs and daily activities in 27 dogs. Third, a feasibility test of the SDS prototype was performed in three dogs with epilepsy. The algorithm was effective in identifying all acceleration data of GTCSs as seizures and all acceleration data of daily activities as non-seizure activities. Dogs with epilepsy were monitored with the prototype for 48–72 h, and three GTCSs were identified. The prototype detected all GTCSs accurately. A false positive finding was not obtained unless the accelerometer was displaced. Hence, a method that can detect epileptic seizures, particularly GTCSs, was established. Nevertheless, further large-scale studies must be conducted before the method can be commercialized.journal articl
Consideration of the Idea of Reverence for the Lives of Animals in the Philosophical Discourse in the Pre-modern Age2. On animals’ souls: Leibniz and the sentience of animals
Arguments developed in the previous discussion suggested the importance of ‘reverence for life’ in animal ethics. In the pre-modern age, natural science developed dramatically through experimental activities, and philosophers regarded reasoning, understanding, and the human mind as representing the most refined essence of human nature. Views on animals were not sophisticated, and cruel recreation using animals was commonly practiced. In that age, Leibniz, who opposed Descartes’ ideas, asserted the existence of monads or souls in ani¬mals. He did not regard animals as machine-like, inorganic living things. He described perceptions and souls that comprised the energy of life and proposed that these made animals what they were as living things. David Hume was a philosopher who recognized animals’ reason. He treated the issue of the relation between animals and humans earlier than utilitarian ideas of animal ethics of the 19th century. Hume clearly confirmed the sentience of animals and their rational essence in his discourses. Although the idea of animals’ souls did not spread, it was associated with the concept of animals’ sentience, which became an important aspect of animal ethics in a later age.
