The split N-fertilization with CAN in three or four doses was considered a measure to improve the nitrogen supply of winter wheat in the past and still is considered a guarantor for good yield and quality. The split N-fertilization with CAN is also recommended to synchronize and harmonize N-demand of the plants as well as soil N-content. The aim of the current study was to analyze simplified (reduced number of N-servings) CAN strategies to winter wheat and the necessity of split nitrogen servings in order to achieve yield and quality aims. This interest was occasioned by impressive results of experiments on farmers fields using simplified N- strategies with CAN. Simplified CAN fertilization strategies are able to produce high grain yield and protein contents with winter wheat when the N-supply is ensured. Therefore, the common split N-servings with CAN are not necessary. Simplified strategies with UAN seem to be possible, but this requires further research on application techniques to reduce NH3 losses. Simplified CAN fertilization strategies were tested based on modern wheat varieties and the high plasticity in the development of the yield compounds. Modern wheat varieties show low harvest-indices which is important to reduce the risk of lodging. Furthermore, these varieties are able to overcome omitted N-servings through remobilization of N in the plants. Suboptimal conditions during the development within one important growing stage can be compensated during later growing stages when the growing conditions are better. These properties in combination with a late first application (BBCH 29/31) of N turned out to be the gold standard in our experiments. Reduction processes during the tillering (BBCH 25/27) period when N is applied confirm these findings. In addition, the application date for the heading stages (BBCH 49/51) when temperatures are high and conditions very dry have to be considered. Simplified N-fertilization systems can also be applied on Luvisols if the soils are not long-term fertilized by liquid manure. The positive soil characteristics of these soils and the high soil-borne fertility support the approach with simplified CAN strategies. In this situation, N-leaching into deeper soil layers is not likely as high precipitation rates in a short time would be necessary to cause this. In fact, a long term liquid manure application with high rates is not necessary when simplified CAN treatments are applied. Moreover, high N amounts in soils caused by long term liquid manure applications are a risk for N-losses and environmental pollution. Notwithstanding the above, organic fertilizers like liquid manure show positive effects on the soil chemistry and the physical properties of the soil. It is important to apply a system to better include the N fertilization effect of liquid manure during the vegetation period. Additionally, simplified CAN fertilization reduces the work effort on the farms. Currently, especially for livestock farms, which rely on N-fertilization, simplified CAN treatments are a good alternative to the common practice. Whereupon on shallow or sandy soils the approach with simplified CAN treatments should be restricted since these soils mostly show low water holding capacities and high percolate water rates. Under suboptimal growing conditions with high precipitation rates simplified CAN treatments can be a risk for the environment and the groundwater. Apart from that, the volatile weather conditions are the most important factor for yield and quality outcome. Mild conditions during the early winter lead to prolonged growing of the plants. In spring the number of tillers per m-2 is already determinated. Therefore, a combination of N doses at the beginning of the growing season in order to promote the number of tillers doesn´t yield the aimed results. The properties of modern wheat cultivars, tested soils, weather conditions and constraints of simplified CAN treatments show the complexity of N fertilization of winter wheat. Standard measures like the common split CAN fertilization are neither wrong nor ideal to create high yield and protein contents with a minimum of input. The most important items for a successful wheat production are high knowledge and attention levels for the plants and growing conditions. Combining the fertilizer requirement calculation and the knowledge on the field yield potential, the yield and quality of winter wheat can be optimized with a minimum of input

Metabolic chamber studies on energy- and macronutrient metabolism : impact of meal skipping and energy flux

The classical concept of body weight regulation attributes the development of obesity to a chronically positive energy balance. There is, however, evidence indicating that beyond this basic concept, the effectiveness of body weight regulation is affected by the circadian regulation of metabolism and the level of energy flux (EF, level of energy balance). Meal skipping affects circadian regulation and might therefore also affect the regulation of body weight. In addition, an asymmetric regulation of body weight is hypothesized with improved effectiveness when EF is high (active lifestyle) and less effectiveness at a low EF (sedentary lifestyle). Metabolic chambers offer the opportunity to acquire short-term parameters of energy and macronutrient balance that precede long-term weight gain and therefore, can help to understand the impact of nutrition and physical activity interventions on body weight regulation. This thesis presents the implementation of a metabolic chamber system (Chapter II) and investigates the acute impact of meal skipping (Chapter III) and energy flux (Chapter IV) on energy and macronutrient metabolism by performing two well-controlled, cross-over intervention studies using metabolic chambers. The implementation of the metabolic chambers revealed, that thorough considerations must be made in terms of the metabolic chamber environment (room ventilation and position of analyzer unit), the additional devices (e.g. air conditioner) used as well as the study protocol, in order to obtain good data quality. The study on meal skipping includes 17 healthy participants who underwent 3 isocaloric 24-h interventions (55%, 30%, and 15% carbohydrate, fat and protein, respectively): a breakfast skipping day (BSD) and a dinner skipping day (DSD) separated by a conventional 3-meal-structure day (control). Energy and macronutrient balance were measured and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations, as well as 24-h glycemia and 24-h insulin secretion (C-peptide), were analyzed. When compared with the 3-meal control, 24-h energy expenditure was higher on DSD (DSD: +69 kcal/d; p < 0.05), but not on BSD. Whereas, fat oxidation increased on the BSD only (+13 g/d; p < 0.01). Spontaneous physical activity, 24-h glycemia, and 24-h insulin secretion did not differ between intervention days. The postprandial homeostasis model assessment index (+54%) and glucose concentrations after lunch (+46%) were, however, higher on the BSD than on the DSD (both p < 0.05). When compared with 3 meals/d, dinner skipping increased energy expenditure. In contrast, higher postprandial insulin concentrations and increased fat oxidation with breakfast skipping show the development of metabolic inflexibility in response to prolonged fasting that may in the long-term lead to impaired glucose homeostasis. The study on energy flux includes 16 healthy participants who underwent three 24-h interventions with different levels of EF: (i) low EF, physical activity level (PAL) = 1.3 1.4 (ii) medium EF, PAL = 1.5 1.6 and (iii) high EF, PAL = 1.7 1.8 each at energy balance (EB), caloric restriction (CR), and overfeeding (OF) (100%, 75% and 125% of individual energy requirement with 50% carbohydrate, 35% fat, 15% protein). Different levels of EF were accomplished by walking (4 km/h) on a treadmill (0, 165 and 330 min). Sleeping energy expenditure (SEE), 24-h macronutrient oxidation and relative macronutrient balance (oxidation relative to intake) were determined. During EB and OF, 24-h fat oxidation increased with higher EF. This resulted in a higher relative fat balance at medium EF (EB: +17%, OF: +14%) and high EF (EB: +23%, OF: +17%) compared to low EF (all p < 0.05). SEE during EB and OF was higher at medium (EB: +5 kcal/3h and OF: +12 kcal/3h) and high (EB: +7 kcal/3h and OF: +18 kcal/3h) EF compared to low EF (all, p < 0.05). In contrast, during CR 24-h fat oxidation was only higher at high EF compared to low EF and neither relative fat balance nor SEE differed between the EF levels. A higher EF might have beneficial effects on body weight regulation during short-term overfeeding and energy balance because it increased SEE and improved relative fat balance. However, during short-term caloric restriction, a higher EF had no impact on the regulation of energy or fat balance. Therefore, a high EF especially can attenuate the adverse effects of short-term overfeeding. Altogether, this thesis emphasizes the importance of physical activity in daily life and suggests that the adverse metabolic outcome of breakfast skipping (caused by a positive energy balance after lunch with a preceding prolonged fasting period) might be attenuated by a high EF.Das klassische Konzept der Regulation des Körpergewichtes begründet die Entwicklung von Adipositas mit einer chronisch positiven Energiebilanz. Der SEE während EB und OF war höher mit mittlerem (EB: +5 kcal/3h and OF: +12 kcal/3h) und hohem (EB: +7 kcal/3h and OF: +18 kcal/3h) EF verglichen mit niedrigem EF (alle p < 0.05).

Taking stock of what has been achieved in a particular research field, where a field currently stands, and where it might move to in the near future is an important undertaking. In this research brief, we present the results of a survey of 225 experienced entrepreneurship researchers who shared their insights on a) what topical areas are currently important in entrepreneurship research and b) what methods might be especially useful to provide interesting and relevant answers to old and new research questions. The results suggest no dramatic differences in the relevance of topics compared to our original survey conducted five years ago (Kuckertz 2013), but do indicate that the field is moving forward in terms of methods by embracing the gold standard of academic rigor inspired by the natural sciences (e.g., experimental designs) and by considering methods that make it possible to capture the complexity of entrepreneurial phenomena

Adaption and assessment of a UHF-RFID system for livestock management

A prerequisite for the implementation of concepts of precision livestock farming is data acquisition on the level of the individual animal, which is only possible on a large scale by applying electronic animal identification. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems in the ultra-high frequency range (UHF, 860 960 MHz) offer the possibility of simultaneous detection of transponders and a variably adjustable read range of more than 3 m. Until now, these systems were, however, only insufficiently adapted to the operating conditions in livestock farming. In collaboration with industry partners, passive UHF-RFID transponders for integration into ear tags for cattle and pigs and readers have been developed and tested. The objective of this thesis was the adaption and assessment of this UHF-RFID system for livestock farming. In particular, 1) the construction and test of a static test bench for UHF-RFID ear tags, 2) the development of a method of measuring the influence of ear tissue on the performance of UHF-RFID ear tags, and 3) the application and validation of the UHF-RFID system for monitoring of trough visits of growing-finishing pigs should be carried out. The experiments supported the selection and further development of UHF transponder ear tags and reader antennas for application in livestock farming. A suitable test method for UHF-RFID technology in the fields of research covered was established and applied for the first time. It repeatedly became clear during the experiments that the greatest challenge for the application of UHF transponders in ear tags is the reduction of the sensitivity against ear tissue. In addition to the monitoring of animal health with UHF-RFID, further research could be carried out regarding the positioning of animals for measurement of motion activity, the combination of transponders with sensors, for example, to measure body temperature, and the utilisation of the technology for implementation of the Internet of Things in food supply chains.

Social and positive sustainability performance measurement : theories, conceptual frameworks, and empirical insights

Over 30 years have passed since the World Commission on Environment and Development published its famous Brundtland report including its definition of sustainable development. Since then, sustainability performance measurement looking beyond traditional financial performance measurement is becoming increasingly important in academia, business practice, and regulation to assess and ultimately manage economic, ecological, and social benefits and damages of organizational behavior along corporate supply chains and product life cycles. However, two overarching critical shortcomings prevent sustainability performance measurement from becoming a truly holistic and relevant decision-supporting instrument. First, the field is characterized by differing levels of maturity in terms of measuring performance of the three triple bottom line sustainability dimensions. Unlike established approaches for measuring ecological performance (e.g., with environmental life cycle assessment; ELCA) and economic performance (e.g., with life cycle costing; LCC), measuring social performance (e.g., with social life cycle assessment; SLCA) is still at a developmental stage, because the field is understudied and fragmented, and lacks empirical experience. Thus, the field of sustainability performance measurement is imbalanced in terms of the integrated assessment of the three sustainability dimensions. Second, the field is characterized by a negative perspective and a focus on becoming less unsustainable instead of making positive progress to sustainable development. Current sustainability performance measurement approaches primarily assess negative burdens or footprints and their reduction during product life cycles and in supply chains (e.g., accidents and fatalities, carbon dioxide emissions, or total cost of ownership) and neglect capturing positive benefits occurring throughout product life cycles and corporate supply chains. A critical reason is that research lacks a fundamental understanding of the general construct of positive sustainability performance. Thus, the field of sustainability performance measurement is incomplete because it fails to characterize and assess the important positive perspective of sustainability-related value creation and positive contributions to sustainable development. Triggered by the overarching critical shortcomings, this dissertation aims at advancing the level of maturity of social performance measurement and at advancing the understanding of positive sustainability performance measurement to promote a more balanced and complete assessment of contributions to sustainable development. To achieve these overarching aims, this dissertation builds on a multitude of research methods (especially, systematic reviews of research and corporate practice, an extensive Delphi study, and qualitative interviews), a resulting richness of empirical data, and various theoretical reflections. This dissertation comprises five studies (i.e., two systematic literature reviews and three empirical papers based on multiple research methods and data sets). Together, the five studies highlight the trends, coherences, inconsistencies, and gaps in social and positive sustainability performance measurement. Furthermore, the studies establish and explain the interrelation between social and positive sustainability performance measurement, advance their conceptual and theoretical foundation, promote standardization by prioritizing relevant indicators, and suggest an approach to measure and evaluate positive contributions to sustainable development. The individual studies presented in this dissertation offer valuable findings for research and managerial practice in the field. Overall, this dissertation provides an important step to measure and ultimately manage social and positive sustainability performance. Thus, it establishes a foundation for the development of sustainable business practices that go beyond merely counteracting negative business outcomes toward actually delivering positive sustainability benefits for business and society.

Competitiveness at the country-sector level : new measures based on global value chains

We propose the so-called domestic embodied unit labor costs (EULC) at the country-sector level as a new cost-related basis for measures of international competitiveness. EULC take into account that a sectors labor costs constitute only a small share of its total cost which to a large extent consist of expenses for inter- mediate goods from other sectors. In line with a simple Leontief-type model, the proposed measure is constructed as a weighted average of unit labor costs of all do- mestic sectors contributing to the final goods of a specific sector. The contribution is expressed in value-added terms and takes global supply chains into account. We also show how EULC can be consistently calculated for sectoral aggregates such as the tradable goods sector. Based on EULC we propose the embodied real effec- tive exchange rate (EREER) at the country-sector level as a new competitiveness indicator where the relevance of trading partners is quantified by an appropriate value-added measure. The chosen value-added concept replaces gross exports tra- ditionally used as the weight basis in effective exchange rates. Using the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) we employ the proposed indicators to shed new light on changes in cost competitiveness at the sectoral level for Germany, and compare the empirical evidence with selected other euro area countries

The soil water regime is focus of various disciplines including agricultural sciences, hydrology, weather forecast and climate modelling. As an inherent part of land surface exchange processes, the dynamics of soil water content (SWC) is simulated in distributed hydrological models and land surface models (LSM). The accuracy of the simulated SWC directly influences the simulation outcome and its performance. Biases in modelled temporal SWC dynamics and its spatial distribution lead to errors in evapotranspiration, runoff, cloud and precipitation simulations. The main objective of my thesis was to study the factors that control the SWC dynamics and its spatial variability. Long-term measurements from the soil moisture networks Kraichgau (KR) and Swabian Alb (SA) provided the data basis of this study. SWC was sensed based on the Time Domain Transmission (TDT) technique. In each region, 21 measuring locations were distributed across three spatial domains: an inner domain 3 km × 3 km (5 stations), a middle 9 km × 9 km (8 stations), and an outer domain 27 km × 27 km (8 stations). The sizes of the three domains correspond with typical grid sizes of coupled atmosphere-LSM models. All stations were mounted on cropped agricultural sites. Each station was equipped with a TDT sensor, installed 15 cm deep into the soil, a rain gauge and a remote transfer unit. After adjusting the sensor networks, an in-situ field calibration was performed to derive pedotransfer and site-specific calibrations for TDT soil moisture sensors. The chemical and physical analysis of soil samples collected at each station revealed that soil bulk density influences in both regions the TDT readings. Moreover, the pedotransfer calibrations included electrical conductivity in KR and silt fraction and organic nitrogen content on SA. These variables are relatively easy to measure. Accordingly, the pedotransfer calibrations derived in this study are a quick possibility to calibrate TDT sensors in areas with similar soil properties as in KR and SA. Nevertheless, the site-specific calibrations performed the best and were therefore used for further data analysis. In the second study, a three-year record of SWC and rainfall was evaluated. The response of the regional mean (theta) of SWC to a rain event was influenced by the seasonal water balance (SWB). In KR, the relation was more pronounced for positive SWB and less for neutral and negative SWB. On SA, where SWB was highly positive in all three years, the response of theta to rainfall was always strong. At the seasonal scale, the relationship between the spatial standard deviation of SWC (sigma) and theta was investigated through sigma-theta phase-space diagrams. The results show that with decreasing SWC sigma-theta data pairs are approaching sigma at the permanent wilting point (sigma-thetawp). With increasing SWC, in contrast, sigma-theta data pairs are moving towards sigma at saturation (sigma-thetas). These two points were termed anchor points. The sigma-theta relationships formed combinations of concave and convex hyperbolas reflecting the variability of soil texture and depending on sigma in relation to the anchor points. At the event scale, hysteresis in the sigma-theta was observed. Most sigma-theta clockwise hysteresis cases occurred at an intermediate and intermediate/wet state of SWC. Among the factors that trigger the initiation of a sigma-theta hysteretic loop, the present study revealed the following: rainstorms with spatially highly variable intensities (threshold rainfall intensity of 1.1 ± 0.6 mm and 2.9 ± 2.8 mm for KR and SA, respectively), preferential flow and, possibly, hysteresis in soil water retention curves. Based on these results, the following hypothesis was formulated: sigma-theta phase space diagrams are useful to test whether hydrological models or land surface models (LSMs) capture the realistic range of spatial soil water variability. The concept was tested with the Noah-MP LSM. Observations obtained from KR and SA soil moisture networks over a three-year period from 2010 to 2012 were used to build up the sigma-theta phase-space. The study included two different setups used to compute the hydraulic conductivity and the diffusivity: 1) the default setting: the Clapp and Hornberger approach, and 2) the van Genuchten-Mualem functions. The default model parameterization was stepwise substituted with site-specific rainfall, soil texture, leaf area index (LAI) and green vegetation fraction (GVF) data. The atmospheric forcing was obtained from eddy covariance stations located in the regions. Although the model matched observed temporal theta dynamics fairly well for the loess soils of KR, it performed poorly in the case of the shallow, clayey and stony soils of SA. The best match was achieved with the van Genuchten-Mualem functions and site-specific rainfall, soil texture, GVF and LAI. Nevertheless, the Noah-MP LSM failed to represent the spatial variability of SWC. In most cases, the simulated sigma-theta data points were located below the bottom edge of the envelope, which indicates that the model smooths spatial variability of soil moisture. This smoothing can be mainly attributed to missing topography and terrain information, inadequate representation of the spatial variability of soil texture and hydraulic parameters, and the model assumption of a uniform root distribution

The size of the middle class and educational outcomes : theory and evidence from the Indian subcontinent

This paper proposes a stylised model to derive the effect of a sizeable middle class on average educational outcomes. Under reasonable assumptions, the model predicts that the spending share on education increases if the middle class becomes larger such that the size of the middle class has a positive impact on education. We test the relationship empirically by using village/neighbourhood level data from Indian household surveys. To tackle the issue of potential endogeneity of the middle class share of the population, we propose a novel instrument that relies on the fraction of the population belonging to the third (middle) caste (sudra). Using this IV strategy, our empirical results support a positive effect of a larger middle class on educational outcomes. Furthermore, we show that the share of the middle class is a more important determinant of female education than male education and that the effect of the middle class on education is more pronounced in rural areas

Organizational and leadership culture as a prerequisite for change management on the example of shopfloor-management

Suzaki 2010, S. 5 ff.; Peters 2009, S. 11). Businesses are at a crossroads between demographic, technological, economic, and social developments that lead to significant organizational challenges. In addition, companies not only operate in the domestic market, but are also largely exposed to international conditions. From the companys point of view, not only quality requirements are important factors, but also the ability to innovate. To meet these high standards, companies must have qualified specialists(Fischer et al. 2013, S. 57). Economic structural change, in particular the transformation of the present work society, is a special form of social change and is thus characterized by a certain relationship between structure and process, statics and dynamics. In production companies, concepts for lean management since the beginning of the 1980s have been discussed, focusing primarily on increasing productivity, reducing costs and general process optimization. Based on Japanese production methods of the automotive industry, new ways of organizing work have been developed, which not only involve employee involvement, but also that they independently deal with problem situations (Frerichs 2014, S. 15; Peters 2009, S. 15). The development stages range from the "Continuous Improvement Process" (CIP) to the Lean Enterprise, from the continuous improvement of individual processes to the ability of self-organization in companies. In this context, one speaks of integrated production systems, since not only individual company processes are changed, but also the management organization is included in the considerations. Nonetheless, one major point of criticism in the context of the optimization of production processes is that so far - as a significant aspect - the management system has received too little attention (Suzaki 2010, pp. 5 et seq., Peters 2009. Shopfloor Management (SFM) starts at this point. As a tool for change, it helps to "consistently and sustainably develop and optimize processes and processes at the place of added value" (Peters 2009, p. 11). Only a corresponding, dynamic organizational culture can ensure the sustainability of this change process (see Sackmann 2004, pp. 26-30). Organizations therefore face particular challenges, especially in terms of organizational and leadership culture. These massive changes in external and internal conditions place new demands on leadership, because general standard solutions are not very useful for a more complex work environment "(Steinkellner 2006, p. 88). In order to be able to handle this complexity, new management tools are needed that no longer see complexity as a flaw that one tries to get rid of by trivialization, routineization and bureaucratization (Steinkellner 2006, p. 88). In order to handle this complexity, new leadership tools are needed that no longer see complexity as a blemish trying to get rid of through trivialization, routineization and bureaucratization (Steinkellner 2006, p. 88). These circumstances result in complex challenges for companies that are far from having all the answers. The extent to which shopfloor management can contribute to optimizing the corporate and management culture and is able to increase the production efficiency of a company should be examined in this dissertation

Aspects of demand-side oriented insurance of volatile food prices in developing and emerging countries

The dissertation is concerned with the relation between formal and informal risk management in developing and emerging countries in the context of rainfall and food price variability. The dissertation contains three research projects. In order to systematize the literature on welfare effects of food price volatility and rainfall risks and the related coping strategies, a systematic review on the quantification of these two risk types has been performed. Many studies in the recent past have been published to quantify poverty effects of materialized risk such as drought events or the consequence of the 2008-09 food price crises in emerging and least developed countries. As agrarian economies in least developed countries heavily depend on the correct onset and amount of rainfall quantities, rainfall failures are likely to have adverse consequences for household income and its volatility. In addition, agrarian households in least developed countries are mostly net food consumers and thus highly dependent on the realization of food prices. The review systematizes the empirical evidence on adverse income effects of drought events and food price increases as well as it summarizes the risk management and coping strategies directly linked to these two shock types. A particular emphasis will be given to the stabilizing power of labor markets and adaptation through consumption responses. The second paper is concerned with informal risk management strategies taken out by agricultural households, in particular with the instrument of labor time allocation. Subsistence farmers in low income countries are confronted with multiple risks. In reaction to them, farm households have developed strategies to cope with yield risks to self-insure against these income shocks. Recent developments in global food markets have increased food price volatility, which, in particular, puts low-income households at risk. When small-scale farmers allocate their labor time over different income generating activities, they face the risk of uncertain purchasing power of income in the presence of food price variability. Thus, the paper analyzes the labor time allocation decision between self-employment and wage labor, taking into account the uncertain purchasing power of wages resulting from food price volatility and the farm production risk induced by rainfall variability. Using a panel structured household data set containing consumer-producer households in rural India, the labor time allocation decision between farming and labor market participation will be analyzed and the effect of production and food price uncertainty on labor time allocation will be estimated. The analysis reveals counterintuitive time allocation effects of risk. The third project is concerned with formal insurance demand by farm households and the interrelatedness between formal and informal risk provision. For this purpose, a data set for a weather index insurance demand product has been analyzed. Index based microinsurance as a tool to insure the income of agriculturally active households has triggered extensive discussions in the literature. Despite the convincing theoretical argumentation, the demand for these products stays behind expectations. Several studies revealed effects impacting the demand for index insurance, such as liquidity constraints, basis risk, lack of understanding and trust in insurers and products alike. This paper takes a different perspective and hypothesizes that low demand is due to heterogeneous risk exposure towards weather variability among potential insured resulting from informal risk management. The paper tests the impact of income heterogeneity as a measure of risk exposure on insurance demand and finds that risk exposure negatively affects insurance demand. In order to increase demand, it is concluded that product design should emphasize more the importance of income risk composition and exposure of potentially insured. The dissertation concludes with a critical discussion of how to reconcile formal and informal risk management practices and gives policy implications of how to innovate existing formal insurance products to increase demand.
