Bringing to Life Our Mission and Vision: the Role of Professional Development in Instructional Technology
Get PDFDespite improved access to digital tools and increased demand to prepare students for the 21st-century workforce, K-12 educators still have difficulty balancing technology, pedagogy, and content in the classroom. In the rural school district of Pleasant County, there is variation in the utilization of instructional technology to engage students as content creators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and communicators. This problem was substantiated as evidenced by the study of the Effective Learning Observation Tool, which identified the domain of engaging, learning-centered instruction as an area of opportunity for the district, with the lowest score in digital learning (Cognia, 2023). In this study, our team utilized the seven effective elements of professional learning to design a learning cohort and implement student-centered coaching cycles to impact teachers’ knowledge, skills, beliefs, and self-efficacy (Darling-Hammond et al., 2017).
This study aims to examine how student-centered coaching cycles, in addition to learning workshops, impacted teachers’ knowledge as defined by TPACK, self-efficacy, and the utilization of instructional technology tools in the classroom. Using a mixed-methods design, data points were collected from a pre-post survey, classroom work plans, and run charts during each coaching cycle with five different teachers. Teachers who participated in the coaching cycles in addition to the learning cohort showed a statistically significant growth in the areas of technological knowledge (TK), technological content knowledge (TCK), and technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), with greater growth across all domains of TPACK when compared with elementary eachers who did not participate in the cohort. Similarly, teachers participating in job-embedded coaching experienced greater gains in self-efficacy and instructional technology tool utilization as evidenced by larger effect sizes. These findings support the utilization of a student-centered coaching framework as a methodology for implementing job-embedded coaching for instructional technology. Additionally, this study provides evidence of effective, sustainable professional development practices to positively impact instructional technology usage in a rural district
Assessing Septic Service Availability and Pricing across Coastal South Carolina
No full textOnsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS), also known as septic systems, are widely used across the United States, particularly in rural and coastal areas that lack access to centralized sewer infrastructure. Regular maintenance, such as pump-outs, is essential for preserving system performance and protecting environmental health. This study examines the availability, pricing, and accessibility of septic services in coastal South Carolina, a region increasingly impacted by environmental pressures, including tidal flooding, rising sea levels, and frequent storms. Drawing on survey data from both septic service providers and users, we identify key barriers to effective septic system management. Our findings reveal that not all companies offer routine maintenance services, and service prices vary by region and system type. Spatial disparities in service availability are often linked to travel distances, potentially contributing to unequal access. From the user perspective, high costs and limited access to timely services remain significant concerns that hinder proper septic system upkeep

No full textThis study examines that does training volume affect the quality of life, emotional intelligence, and performance of shooting athletes with physical disabilities? Ninety participants were randomly assigned to three groups based on weekly shooting durations of 2, 4, and 6 hours, maintaining a 1:1 female-tomale ratio until the total sample size reached 90 (30 per group). Quality of life, emotional intelligence, and performance were measured using the WHOQOL-BREF, SSEIT, and the Navak analysis system with an electronic scoreboard, respectively. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient identified positive correlations between shooting hours and the variables. However, the Tukeys-b test revealed no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 for EI except for the Uncategorized subscale. One-Way ANOVA revealed significant differences between the groups, with more practice hours leading to better outcomes. The study concludes that increased air pistol shooting practice can enhance quality of life, emotional intelligence, and performance in young individuals with physical disabilities
Pathways to Leadership: How Meaningful Experiences Shape Motivation in 4-H Teen Leaders
No full textYouth leadership development is crucial for empowering young people to thrive and contribute to society. Research on 4-H has demonstrated significant leadership growth among program participants, with effects persisting into emerging adulthood. However, little is known about what specific experiences shape 4-H youth’s motivation to lead. This qualitative study explores meaningful experiences—vividly remembered moments with positive and enduring effects—that nurture leadership motivation among 4-H teen leaders. Seven emerging adults aged 18-21 with extensive leadership experience in Missouri 4-H programs participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Using a thematic analysis approach, we identified two categories of meaningful experiences, namely transformative moments and formative experiences. These experiences shaped leadership motivation in 4-H programs through four key mechanisms: inspiring vision, building confidence, fostering autonomy, and recognizing impact. This study uniquely introduces the manifestations of meaningful experiences through the recollections of 4-H youth, highlighting how seemingly small acts, as well as structured activities, can serve as catalysts for youth leadership development. Implications include the importance of creating relational spaces and opportunities that facilitate meaningful experiences by diversifying leadership opportunities, nurturing developmental relationships, and implementing and strengthening recognition platforms
