    Factors that affect students' decision to change their major to Management Information Systems in Gulf Regions

    This research paper studies the trend of declining student numbers in the information systems program. Many existing academic studies have found various reasons that have contributed towards this downward trend, mainly negative perception of job prospects, salary and negative images towards information systems. However, this trend often changes after a year or so in universities, as many students tend to change their majors to information systems, especially in gulf regions. The findings of this study depicts that there are positive and negative aspects that contributes to students’ change of majors, and these needs to be addressed by universities in order to bring in more students during the enrollment of the programs. Marketing and promotions are suggested, mainly to focus on providing information that is accessible and current, which could influence students’ decision making process

    The expansion in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field has not only been in excellence of interaction, it has also experienced different branching in computer arts. Instead of designing regular interfaces, the different research branches have had different focus on the concepts of multi-modality rather than uni-modality, pleasure, intelligent adaptive interfaces rather than command/action based ones, and finally active with human engagement rather than passive interfaces. One important area that contributes to creative practice in art is HCI, or interaction design in particular. An innovated framework for human computer interaction based on both pleasure and human engagement that exploit modern computer arts components and technologies is introduced. In designing for engagement, the artist needs to consider where they sit in this space and what kind of engagement or engagement process they are concerned with. On other designing issue many artwork consider pleasure as form of interaction with specific characteristics. Providing a context in which appropriate interaction design decisions can be made and the nature of the interactive experience must be addressed.&nbsp

    Analyzing the Domain of Analytics Research

    The field of analytics occupies a large spectrum of research and development across the disciplines of science and technology. The implications of the term ‘analytics’ and associated research are of great importance to both industry and academia. This term has a widespread usage in many contexts. Defining and elaborating analytics research more precisely is a step forward to accelerating/stimulating research in this area. In this article, we analyze and explore the domain of the definition of analytics research from the information systems viewpoint. This is achieved by investigating the literature on Information Systems in order to extract the actual usage of analytics in both academic and practice environments. We conclude that the scope of analytics embodies five components namely, Technology, Applications, Methods, Results, and descriptors. We offer some justifications to a claim that this definition has made business analytic research more focused and more productive.&nbsp

    The knowledge creation in Saudi Telecom Company: an exploratory study

    The study aimed to examining the knowledge generation process in Saudi companies, through the use of Nonaka and Takeuchi model, specifically in the Saudi Telecom Company. The researcher used the descriptive survey method as a method for the study, a questionnaire (prepared by the researcher) as a tool for the study that includes five main themes: socialization, externalization, internalization, combination and knowledge creation. The questionnaire has been electronically prepared and the electronic link has been sent via message center in the company to Community members who represent three categories in the senior management of STC, they are: Vice-President, General Manager and Director of Department. The study rrespondents consisted of (133) individuals of total (390). The most important findings of the study were: there is a support for the exchange of implicit knowledge among individuals, there is a need to support the documentation of implicit knowledge at individuals, there is a support for the integration of explicit knowledge with other explicit knowledge available and related to the purposes of work, there is a support to convert explicit knowledge to implicit knowledge, and the success of the company in generating Knowledge. The most important recommendations were: the need to support career recycling plans across different departments to further support the exchange of knowledge, supporting the practice groups and documenting their discussions in the work area, supporting archiving (the outcome of the meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, reports and others for reference if needed), and the need to take advantage of scientific research and published reports that serve the interests of the company. &nbsp

    Enhancing the segmentation of Arabic characters using baseline information

    Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system was present to provide an automatic recognition of large printed documents for archiving or processing which improves the interaction between human and machine in many applications. The proposed system was developed for Arabic language. Arabic language is written cursively and consists of 29 characters each with different shapes. The Arabic OCR (AOCR) system is divided into several steps: image acquisition, preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, recognition and post processing. Segmentation step segments the text into lines, then into glyphs and finally into characters. The most important and sensitive step is the character segmentation step which its result may affect the following steps and at the end the recognition rate. This study has concentrated on character segmentation by enhancing an already published algorithm in the literature. As a result, the new algorithm decreases the processing time and avoids the segmentation of descenders such as the letter Ra (ر) and End Ya shapes (ـي، ى، ئ)

    Phase transitions’ in time series for arriving and household domestic tourism statistics

    The normalized time series over arriving and household domestic statistics for different types of expenditures (package tours, accommodation, food-beverage, health, tour services, GSM roaming, clothes-shoes, souvenirs, carpets-rugs) in the period 2003-2016 in Turkey touristic sector have been investigated by the application of nonlinear statistical analysis (entropy evaluation via Hurst exponents, fractal Hausdorff dimension in the statespace). We demonstrate the existence of ‘phase transitions’ for the particular expenditures in different time periods. Our approach opens a gate for studying chaotic components in touristic time series and for developing nonlinear dynamical model in the multi-dimensional statespace of touristic expenditure variables

That’s because knowledge is the motivating force for the success of businesses and achieving competitive advantage. Without identifying critical success factors it is not expected from the organization to be successful in achieving its overall strategy and its goals. The use of "SWOT analysis methodology (four-wheel analysis or analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) applied in the literature and previous studies addressed the critical success factors for projects of knowledge management in different organizations in order to draw these factors through what is stated in previous studies, and its contents of critical success factors, including easier for researchers and practitioners access to these factors and take advantage of them, either in the application or as a theoretical research. In light of the findings of the study, the researchers recommended that organizations need to take into account the critical success factors previously mentioned when planning knowledge management projects and their implementation.     Field and Loading Unit Analysis of Vertical Pressure Distribution on Highway Sublayers

    Traffic loads on pavements transfer to base, subbase and subgrade levels.These over loads on sublayers cause severe deterioration to the pavement and thusdiminish its life. Through using geogrids interface between base and subbase, transferredload efficiency can be reduced. Related to load transfer mechanism, sublayer thickness,design and aggregate gradation distribution are so crucial. In this study, vertical pressuredistribution analyses according to traffic loads, tire configuration and layer thickness wereinvestigated with field and laboratory test. Measurement sensors were settled on asphaltpavement and embedded base layer, obtained data were saved. The pressure valuesranged from 550 kPa to 790 kPa on top of the pavement surface and from 31 to 33 kPa ontop of the subbase layer were obtained. In each test, 35 kPa vertical pressure and ESAL’sof 80 kN were applied by the vertical piston in accordance to the field. 2 types of geogridswere used for laboratory analyses; each geogrid type function related to vertical pressuredistribution on itself were calculated. Cumulative distribution function was used forestimating the probability of damage risk. The function parameters calculated with thehelp of lognormal mean and lognormal standard deviation values of highway verticaldisplacements. The cumulative distribution functions were generalized and the probabilityof the damage was shown on graphics.
