Hexis of the Body and the Project of Active Piety in Islamic Early Childhood Education in Solo
Purpose – This study addresses the limited scholarly attention given to the role of the body in shaping religious piety within early childhood education, particularly in Islamic-based institutions. While most studies on piety emphasize cognitive, doctrinal, or socio-political dimensions, little is known about how bodily practices contribute to the internalization of religious values from an early age. Therefore, this research aims to reveal the significant role of the body in the project of piety within Islamic-based Early Childhood Education institutions, specifically Raudlatul Athfal (RA) Ummah 5. In teaching Islam, RA Ummah 5 emphasizes the importance of bodily discipline.Design/methods/approach – This research employed an ethnographic approach. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation to capture children’s activities during both classroom and outdoor learning processes. In addition, in-depth interviews were carried out with the RA principal and teachers, and relevant documents were gathered to strengthen the findings. Through the ethnographic approach, the study explored the specific cultural patterns practiced at RA Ummah 5. Data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s framework, which includes data collection, display, reduction, and verification/conclusion drawing.Findings – The piety project developed at RA Ummah 5 cannot be linked to the market or radicalism; instead, the institution defines its own model of piety based on foundational texts (the Qur’an and Hadith) interpreted textually. This aligns with the ideology rooted in the practices of the Prophet and the third generation of Muslims after him. Bodily practices reflect a discursive Islamic tradition connected to the past and validated by the continuity of practices transmitted across generations. In other words, RA Ummah 5 seeks to construct a future Islam that mirrors the past, distancing itself from modernity by reviving and sustaining traditional Islamic practices.Research implications/limitations – This study is limited in scope as it focuses on a single institution with a small number of respondents. Future research should expand to include more diverse contexts and participants to provide deeper and more comprehensive insights. Researchers should also develop a broader understanding of the research setting to enhance data collection.Practical implications – The findings provide new insights for educators, suggesting that hexis can serve as a means of shaping and controlling children’s behavior to achieve specific educational visions. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how RA Ummah 5 constructs its own version of piety—nurturing a rabbani generation that is spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually intelligent. The form of piety developed through bodily hexis is neither dictated by the market nor aligned with radicalism, as often emphasized in prior studies. Instead, this research highlights how bodily hexis is strategically employed as a medium for transmitting and internalizing Islamic values in early childhood education, in accordance with the ideology constructed by the school.Paper type Research pape
Instructional Media in Early Moral Education: A Systematic Review on the Cultivation of Religious and Moral Values in Children Aged 4–6
In an era marked by moral uncertainty and the erosion of traditional value systems, early childhood education faces increasing pressure to cultivate ethical and religious foundations from a young age. This study systematically reviews the role of instructional media in instilling religious and moral values among children aged 4–6. Utilizing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach guided by the PRISMA 2020 protocol and structured using the PICO framework, this review synthesizes findings from 20 empirical studies published between 2016 and 2024. The analysis identifies two dominant categories of media—traditional (e.g., puzzles, board games, local games) and audiovisual (e.g., animations, digital storybooks)—which are most effective when integrated with pedagogical strategies such as storytelling, ritual routines, and play-based learning. Instructional tools grounded in local culture and values not only enhance comprehension but also support identity formation and contextual moral internalization. The review further finds that many media interventions leverage constructivist and experiential learning models, promoting internalization through relatable and immersive experiences. However, gaps remain, particularly regarding longitudinal impact assessments and cross-contextual evaluations. The studies underscore the need for teacher professional development in media-based moral instruction, culturally responsive curriculum planning, and collaborative engagement among educators, curriculum developers, and community stakeholders. Limitations include the narrow temporal scope and inconsistencies in methodological rigor across studies. Future research is encouraged to adopt more robust, long-term, and culturally comparative designs to determine optimal combinations of media types and pedagogical techniques for sustained moral development in diverse educational settings
Home-School Communication in Digital Era: A Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Technology Supporting Parental Involvement in Early Childhood Education
Despite the increasing integration of digital technologies in early childhood education, there remains a significant gap in comprehensive, trend-based understanding of how these technologies support parental involvement. Existing studies often lack a systematic exploration of publication patterns, thematic focuses, and emerging innovations in this field. This study addresses that gap by analysing the scope and trajectory of research on technology that supports parental involvement in early childhood education using bibliometric review and data mapping techniques. This study examined relevant publications from 2014 to 2023 through computational mapping using VOSviewer software. Bibliometric data from 101 scholarly articles were retrieved via Harzing’s Publish or Perish software and analyzed to generate visualization maps that categorize research themes and trends. Findings indicate fluctuating but overall increasing trends in research output, with notable peaks after 2020, suggesting renewed interest in this domain, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. The visualization maps revealed core research themes centered around digital communication tools, parental engagement, and home-school collaboration. These findings have significant implications for future educational practices and policy development. They provide a foundation for enhancing digital strategies that foster equitable and meaningful parent-educator partnerships in early childhood education. Furthermore, they highlight the importance of addressing digital literacy gaps and promoting inclusive approaches in the design and implementation of technology-mediated parental involvement programs
Embedding Religious Values through the “Dodosidodo” Lullaby Tradition: A Culturally Rooted Approach to Early Childhood Education in Aceh Tamiang
This study investigates the transmission of religious values through the Ngayon Anak “Dodosidodo” tradition as practiced in early childhood parenting among the Tamiang ethnic community in Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia. The tradition, which involves mothers singing poetic lullabies while gently swinging their children, serves as a medium for embedding Islamic teachings and moral values such as monotheism, obedience, honesty, patience, and affection. Utilizing a qualitative ethnographic approach with a multi-site case study design, this research employed observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to explore the symbolic structure, functions, and educational significance of Dodosidodo. The tradition manifests in three symbolic forms: Berunjo (sitting posture with extended legs), Ipere’ (child in a swing), and Bele (gentle caress), each of which reinforces familial bonds and facilitates the internalization of ethical values during early developmental stages. The findings indicate that Dodosidodo not only supports emotional security and spiritual awareness in children but also acts as a form of informal religious instruction deeply rooted in cultural identity. However, the continuity of this oral tradition is threatened by modern childcare practices, digital media, and the declining use of local languages. This study highlights the urgency of preserving such traditions as culturally responsive pedagogical models that contribute to holistic early childhood education. The integration of indigenous practices like Dodosidodo into contemporary educational frameworks offers valuable insights for strengthening character education grounded in local wisdom and Islamic ethics
Managing Tantrums through Storytelling: A Media Feasibility Study of a Picture Book-Based Intervention for Parents of Children Aged 3–4 Years
This study addresses the challenge faced by many parents of children aged 3–4 years who struggle to manage tantrum behaviors due to limited understanding of tantrums and appropriate handling strategies. The primary objective of this research is to develop a picture storybook that is both feasible and easy to read, aimed at supporting parents in addressing tantrum behaviors in early childhood. The study adopts a Research and Development (R&D) methodology using the ADDIE model—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—restricted to the development phase. This phase ensures the validity of the product through expert reviews and user testing. The picture storybook is designed with realistic themes that reflect tantrum-related scenarios and incorporate core values such as empathy, responsibility, and discipline. Key narrative components include characters, settings, linear plots, implicit moral messages, third-person point of view, and the use of simple language suited for early childhood contexts. Validation results show that the picture storybook was rated as highly appropriate by content experts (score: 89.5) and media experts (score: 59.5). Furthermore, parental assessment indicated the book was very easy to read, with scores of 83.8 in a small-scale test and 85.12 in a large-scale test. The results of this study imply that a well-structured picture storybook can function as an effective educational tool for improving parental understanding and strategies in managing tantrum behavior. However, a limitation of this study is the absence of data on long-term behavioral outcomes due to the restriction of the research to the development stage. Future research is recommended to employ a pretest-posttest experimental design to evaluate the book’s effectiveness in enhancing parental knowledge and attitudes. Expanding the sample size and duration of book use is also advised to assess its broader applicability
An Analysis of Children’s Visual Artworks Through Free Drawing in Children Aged 5–7 Years
Children aged 5–7 years are in the preoperational stage of cognitive development. The problem that occurs in children of this age is that their ability to express their imagination through drawings is still limited. Previous research has not examined how visual expression emerges in early childhood drawings, particularly regarding drawing stages, object shapes, drawing duration, and sources of inspiration. This study aims to analyze the visual expression of drawings by children aged 5–7 years, focusing on drawing stages, object shapes, drawing duration, and sources of inspiration. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects were 70 kindergarten children in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using reduction, presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The results showed that children\u27s drawing process involves imagination, creativity, and storytelling. The most frequently drawn object was a butterfly, with the longest drawing duration being between 10–15 minutes. Most of the drawings were inspired by children\u27s visual experiences. This study found that 61 children drew based on objects they imagined, while 9 children experienced difficulty expressing ideas visually. This research contributes to early childhood education by stimulating visual expression as a foundation for creativity in kindergarten learning. However, this study was limited to one region and a limited number of subjects, so it does not fully represent the cultural diversity of children. Future research can be conducted on a broader and more diverse range of subjects and children\u27s drawings. Further research may also help children who have difficulty with visual expression

Purpose – This study aims to evaluate the representation and relevance of religious moderation values in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) textbooks for the Senior High School (SMA) level in North Sumatera. The study responds to the discrepancy between national policies emphasizing the importance of moderation and textbook content that does not fully reflect principles of inclusivity, pluralism, and interfaith dialogue.
Design/methods/approach – A qualitative approach was employed using the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) method on officially sanctioned PAI textbooks based on the Merdeka Curriculum and KMA No. 183 of 2019. The analysis was conducted on narrative content, visuals, learning activities, and other graphic elements. Data coding and interpretation were supported by ATLAS.ti software, with validity ensured through researcher triangulation and analytical auditing.
Findings – The results indicate that PAI textbooks generally represent religious moderation values such as tasamuh (tolerance), tawassuth (moderation), and i’tidal (justice). However, values such as muwathanah (national commitment) and musawah(equality) remain underrepresented. Visual aspects and the integration of learning technology are also minimal, and weaknesses were identified in the editing of religious terminology.
Research implications – The study\u27s results serve as a foundation for policymakers, textbook authors, and educators to revise instructional materials to be more inclusive in narrative, visual, and digital dimensions. Recommendations are directed toward strengthening the internalization of moderation values through contextual pedagogical approaches and technology integration
