Megalinus neolizipingensis sp. n. from Sichuan and Yunnan is described. New synonyms of Megalinus (=Lepidophallus) are established
First record of the yellow sugarcane aphid Sipha flava (Forbes) (Hemiptera Aphididae) in the European continent
The yellow sugarcane aphid Sipha flava (Forbes) is recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula and also in the European continent, on the common thatching grass Hyparrhenia hirta (L.) Stapf in Oliver, in two localities of Catalonia (La Selva del Camp and Blanes, provinces of Tarragona and Girona, respectively; NE Spain). Data on its biology and distribution worldwide and notes on its pest behaviour are given. Sipha flava had been recorded previously from Azores Islands (in 1979), and recently from Morocco (in 2008)
Vespa velutina Lepeletier (Hymenoptera Vespidae): a first assessment two years after its arrival in Italy
Vespa velutina nigrithorax is an invasive alien social wasp species known as harmful for its effective prey pressure on Apis mellifera. The aim of this work was to assess the presence of V. v. nigrithorax two years after the first capture in North West Italy, to evaluate its relative abundance and dominance in the social wasp communities sampled by means of bait-traps, and to describe some biological and nesting activity. V. v. nigrithorax was trapped or observed in 4 localities in Piedmont and in 10 localities in Liguria, from 20 m a.s.l. up to 1100 m a.s.l. Five embryo and eight developed nests were counted in eight different localities. V. v. nigrithorax was a subdominant species in the social wasp community trapped at Giardini Hanbury (Liguria). At present, V. v. nigrithorax is spreading in North West of Italy at a rate of 10-20 Km per year and measures for its spatial containment should be urgently implemented
Forestry research to support the transition towards a bio-based economy
This special issue is dedicated to the celebration of the 92nd anniversary of the Forestry Research Centre of the Italian Agricultural Research Council. The Centre originated in 1922 as Royal Experimental Station of Silviculture, joined to the Chair of Silviculture of the Royal Institution for Upper Education in Forestry of Firenze (Italy). Aldo Pavari, eminent scientist and teacher at the University of Firenze, was the first director from 1922 up to his death in 1960. On the year 1967, the Experimental Station was reorganized as Experimental Institute for Silviculture with head offices in Arezzo and local branches in Firenze, Isernia and Cosenza. From 1972 to 1995 the position of director was held by Riccardo Morandini, who defined new goals and reformed both inner structure and research programme, renewing the experimental approach to forest sciences. Since 1999, the Experimental Institute for Silviculture has become the current Forestry Research Centre
Rice fields as a hot spot of water beetles (Coleoptera Adephaga and Polyphaga)
The study is representative of wetlands subjected to strong anthropogenic impact as rice fields are. The aquatic Coleoptera have been collected monthly from channels, rice fields and a natural spring for one year, resulting in 31 species belonging to 8 families (Brachyceridae, Dytiscidae, Dryopidae, Elmidae, Gyrinidae, Haliplidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae) which have been identified, 19 of which in rice paddies. The comparison of paddies subjected to different anthropogenic impacts shows that the flooding period is only one of the factors influencing the community of water beetles. Important information on the occurrence of the species during the year is also provided and adds to the few knowledge present in the literature. All the data, as well as the detection of vulnerable and rare species, evidence that rice agro-ecosystems are essential for the exploitation of water beetle biodiversity in areas densely colonized, industrialized and cultivated, where wetlands has strongly reduced over the last centuries
First record of Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance) (Hemiptera Aleyrodidae) in Montenegro
In October 2013, orange spiny whitefly Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) was detected for the first time in Montenegro. It was found in citrus orchards in Baošići (orange and mandarin), Herceg Novi (mandarin) and Kumbor (orange), in an area of Boka Kotor Bay on the Adriatic Sea (latitude 42° 26’ north). A. spiniferus is regulated in the European Union and therefore an immediate survey of the whole montenegrin coastal area, where citrus production occurs, was undertaken. The pest was additionally found in Djnovići, on a small number of mandarin and lemon trees. A. spiniferus is polyphagous and a major pest of citrus. It originated in southeast Asia and has spread widely in tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. In Europe it was first detected in Italy (2008) and subsequently in Croatia (2012). It presents a potential risk for citrus production in Montenegro, particularly for the important citrus producing areas of Bar and Ulcinj. These areas, geographically more southern than the area of first detection, are still free from the pest. Additionally, the whitefly presents a potential risk for other host plants grown in Montenegro where the climatic conditions are suitable for acclimatization of A. spiniferus
Revised distributional data on Pogonosoma maroccanum (F.) (Diptera Asilidae) in Europe, with notes on its bio-ecology
New distributional data on Pogonosoma maroccanum (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera, Asilidae) are provided and discussed. The new records regard Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia and Greece. Moreover, some biological and ecological information on the species is reported. Diagnostic features for adults, including genitalia and pupal cases, are illustrated
Early and long-term impacts of browsing by roe deer in oak coppiced woods along a gradient of population density
Over the last few decades, wild ungulate populations have exhibited relevant geographic and demographic expansion in most European countries; roe deer is amongst the most widespread ungulate species. The increasing roe deer densities have led to strong impact on forest regeneration; the problem has been recently recognized in coppice woods, a silvicultural system which is widespread in Italy, where it amounts to about 56% of the total national forested area.In this study we investigated the effect of roe deer browsing on the vegetative regeneration of Turkey oak few years after coppicing, along a gradient of roe deer density. A browsing index revealed that browsing impact was high at any given roe deer density but increased at higher density, with the browsing rate ranging from 65% to 79%. We also analyzed the long-term impact of browsing six and eleven years after coppicing under a medium roe deer density. Results indicated the early impact are not ephemeral but produced prolonged impacts through time, with an average reduction in volume of -57% and -41% six and eleven years after coppicing, respectively. Based on these results we proposed integrating browsing monitoring with roe deer density estimation to allow identifying ungulate densities which are compatible with silvicultural and forest management objectives. The proposed browsing index can be regarded as an effective management tool, on account of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, being therefore highly suitable for routine, large scale monitoring of browsing impact
Integrated forest management to prevent wildfires under Mediterranean environments
This review presents a multidisciplinary framework for integrating the ecological, regulatory, procedural and technical aspects of forest management for fires prevention under Mediterranean environments. The aims are to: i) provide a foreground of wildfire scenario; ii) illustrate the theoretical background of forest fuel management; iii) describe the available fuel management techniques and mechanical operations for fire prevention in forest and wildland-urban interfaces, with exemplification of case-studies; iv) allocate fire prevention activities under the hierarchy of forest planning. The review is conceived as an outline commentary discussion targeted to professionals, technicians and government personnel involved in forestry and environmental management
Source and rate of nitrogen application influence agronomic N-use efficiency and harvest index in maize (Zea mays L) genotypes
The objective of this research work was to compare the agronomic N use efficiency (NUEA) and harvest index re¬sponse of different maize (Zea mays L) genotypes to different N-fertilizer sources [urea, calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and ammonium sulphate (AS)] at various levels (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1). Field experiments were conducted at the Agriculture Research Farm of The University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan during summer 2008 (year one) and 2010 (year two). The two years data indicated that NUEA had negative relationship with in¬crease in N rate (50 > 100 > 150 > 200 kg ha-1) while harvest index had positive relationship with increase in N rate up to 150 kg ha-1 (200 100 > 50 kg ha-1). Both NUEA and harvest index ranked first with application of AS (AS > CAN > urea). The maize hybrid produced higher NUEA and harvest index than local cultivars (Pioneer-3025 > Jalal > Azam). Although AS had the highest NUEA and harvest was still considered the less profitable N-fertilizer source because of its highest N cost kg-1 [AS (143 and 191 PKR kg N-1) > CAN (77 and 97 PKR kg N-1) > urea (44 and 56 PKR kg N-1)] in 2008 and 2010, respectively. The decline in AS price could make it more profitable and most beneficial N-fertilizer source in the calcareous soils of the country because of its free available sulfur (24%) lacking in urea and CAN
