    Out With the Old, In With the New: Revitalizing a Leisure Reading Section in an Academic Library

    Every university has a different way of providing its patrons with popular or leisure reading titles. In academic libraries, mission statements and collections policies focus on resources supporting research and teaching. A leisure reading collection within academic libraries may be tended with care or fall by the wayside when resources are needed elsewhere. It can be overwhelming to find oneself responsible for a collection that has not been the priority. This case study will discuss how a relatively stagnant leisure reading collection was revived to engage users with library spaces and collections. While such a task can seem challenging at the beginning, intentional selection, care, and marketing can increase the accessibility, visibility, and usability of the collection. Over five years, the leisure reading collection at the University of Tennessee Libraries became a tool for engagement and a visible connection to library values

    Oncofertility: Standardizing Fertility Preservation Discussion and Referrals for Adolescents and Young Adults with Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer

    . BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is the most diagnosed cancer in adolescents and young adults (AYA). Patients in this population face unique challenges related to fertility risks posed by chemotherapy. Current evidence suggests that all patients in this population should have a documented conversation about fertility preservation when discussing treatment options and a referral to fertility specialists if warranted. LOCAL PROBLEM: The setting of this evidence-based practice quality improvement (EBPQI) project was at a breast center located within an NCI-designated cancer center. The clinic did not have a standardized process for documenting fertility preservation discussions and implementing fertility referrals. The goal of this project was to increase documented fertility preservation discussions and completed referrals to fertility specialists by 50%. METHODS: The Evidence-based Practice Improvement model was chosen as the guiding framework for this project. Based on current workflow and in conjunction with synthesis of best available evidence, implementation of a standardized process for fertility preservation discussions and referrals using an EHR-based best practice advisory (BPA) and oncofertility tool was recommended. INTERVENTIONS: The BPA, which included a link to an oncofertility tool, was embedded into the EHR. During initial consultation encounters with newly diagnosed AYA patients with breast cancer requiring chemotherapy treatment, the BPA alerts providers to the need to discuss fertility preservation and assess oncofertilty concerns using a standardized tool. Referral was then placed based on risk and patient preference. RESULTS: Documented fertility discussions increased by 42%; completed referrals decreased. While project aims were not met, the increase in discussions is clinically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The BPA improved fertility preservation documentation but not completed referrals. Several barriers were identified during implementation including provider staffing, implicit bias, and treatment timeline limitations. To promote future progress toward goals and sustainability, increased efforts at provider education, identification of a physician champion, and fertility clinic collaborations are recommended

    Football Spending for Success: Analyzing Investment and Team Performance in NCAA FBS Programs

    This study examines the relationship between financial investment and team performance in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football programs from 2010 to 2023. Key variables include total football spending, head coach salaries and bonuses, and win-loss records. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression models were used to examine these associations, controlling for conference affiliation by distinguishing between the so-called power and non-power conferences. The results indicate that greater investment in football operations and coaching compensation is significantly associated with higher win percentages, particularly within power conference programs. However, the impact of financial investment on final rankings differs by conference type. Total football spending is a significant predictor of rankings in power conferences, whereas head coach salary is the only significant predictor in non-power conferences. These findings suggest that financial investment enhances team performance, though its effectiveness varies depending on institutional context

    Spatial Attention\u27s Role in Active Memory Maintenance Depends on Whether Space is the Attended Feature

    Space and time are thought to play a critical role in working memory (WM) formation and maintenance relative to other object features. Both features have been found to enable feature binding and to be incidentally encoded in memory. However, the extent that space and time operate as complementary codes or trade priority depending on task relevance remains an open question. Here we investigated if the relevance of spatial information affects whether spatial attention contributes to memory maintenance when items are separated in space and time. We report two experiments with human participants (male and female) that differed in whether location or color was the tested feature. In both experiments, we measured EEG alpha-band power while observers memorized the target feature of two sequentially presented colored dots. We then applied an inverted encoding model (IEM) to the topography of oscillatory alpha-band power (8 – 12 Hz) on the scalp to measure how long the location of each item was attended. In Experiment 1, observers performed a delayed spatial estimation task, and we found that patterns of alpha-band power tracked each item’s location throughout the duration of the trial. In Experiment 2, observers performed a delayed color estimation task, and we found that patterns of alpha-band power only tracked the location of the most recently presented item. Together, our results show that multiple locations are actively attended over a sequence when they are the tested feature, but that spatial attention tracks maintenance of only the most recent item when location is irrelevant
