The Applied Sport Management Association’s Distinguished Service and Mentorship Award was initiated in 2022 as a renaming and repurposing of the ASMA Scholar Lifetime Achievement Award presented from 2009 to 2020. This service and mentorship award recognizes an ASMA member who has exhibited continued, exemplary service to ASMA, who connects sport management research with practitioners in an applied manner, and who demonstrates dedication to students and mentorship within the ASMA. Recipients of this award provide a keynote address to the ASMA membership at the annual conference. Supporting First Responder Resilience: A Mental Health Initiative
BACKGROUND: First responders are increasingly suffering from mental health complications. Evidence suggests that improving culturally competent resources and practices enhances protective factors combating these trends. This project was developed to support current mental health resources for the Denver Fire Department.
LOCAL PROBLEM: No standard process for mental health education or assessment was utilized by the Denver Fire Department (Colorado) Wellness Department, resulting in missed opportunities for early intervention.
METHODS: The Evidence-based Practice Improvement (EBPI) model was used to guide the assessment of practice needs and site workflow. A literature search, review, and critical appraisal of evidence was conducted. The aim of the project was to educate 80% of first responder participants and have a 10% quarterly reported increase of first responders accessing available mental health resources. The Wellness Department Project Team agreed to implement mental health, mindfulness, and self-assessment workshops. Data collection of pre and post questionnaires were aggregated. Follow up appointments were evaluated retrospectively on accessed resources.
INTERVENTIONS: The workshops included tailored mental health education, mindfulness videos, and written materials on current resources available. Two assessment tools based on evidence review and population participation were introduced for self-assessments, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).
RESULTS: Five Fire Houses with 68 first responders participated. There was 100% engagement within each Fire House. Data collected from pre and post questionnaires showed statistically significant improvements. Data from quarterly reports on accessed available resources did not increase, with 945 participating in Quarter 1 of 2024 and 938 participating in Quarter 1 of 2025. However, 14 first responders have contacted the Wellness Department directly for personal follow up.
CONCLUSIONS: Implementing an evidence-based, culturally competent mental health workshop successfully improved first responders reported ability to participate in preventative mental health care and provide peer support increasing resilience overall
Connected Farm: Final Design Report
Farmers need a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective solution to address these challenges and improve their overall farming operations. Connected Farm to satisfy this need by providing real time data insights, analytics, alerts, and visualizations to enhance farm efficiency and sustainability at an affordable cost. The design of the Connected Farm system involves four aspects: sensors, networking, backend, and frontend. Each sensor consists of an Arduino Mega connected to a temperature and humidity sensor, a soil moisture sensor, a water level sensor, and an ultrasonic sensor. A 9V battery serves as the module’s power source. An ESP8266-01s Wi-Fi module transmits the collected data back to the backend server. These components can be easily acquired at a relatively low price to reduce the barrier of entry for farmers considering IoT monitoring. The data that the sensors collect needs to be periodically transmitted to the backend server. This is handled via Wi-Fi since it is simple to set up and a well-established solution to the problem of wirelessly transmitting data. The data transmitted from the sensors then needs to be received by a server to be operated on and stored in a database. Since setting up server hardware is expensive and complicated, Connected Farm takes advantage of AWS cloud services to provide a simple, low upfront cost way for farmers to set up the system. On the software side, the backend will be built with Node.js using the Express.js library. This backend provides API calls that allow both the sensors and the frontend to interact with the databases. After receiving a request, the backend will either place data in or get data from one of the two databases depending on the type of data. Data collected from the sensors and user data will be stored in an AWS Relational Database Service database. The frontend, which presents the data collected from the sensors to users through various plots and charts, will tie the entire project together. Since farmers need to access this data on the go, the frontend will be built for mobile using React Native as well as various libraries and tools selected to create a professional, compelling, and visually appealing design
Investigating HpaB as a Modulator of Gut-Brain Connectivity through Neurotransmitter Metabolism by Gut Microbiota
The gut-brain axis represents a bidirectional communication network linking the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. A growing body of research implicates gut microbiota in modulating host neurochemistry, largely through microbial metabolism of neurotransmitters. This thesis investigates the flavin-dependent monooxygenase HpaB as a putative microbial enzyme involved in host dopamine metabolism, thereby influencing gut-brain signaling. Traditionally characterized for its role in the homoprotocatechuate (HPC) pathway, HpaB catalyzes the hydroxylation of 4-hydroxyphenylacetate (4-HPA) to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate (3,4-DHPA)—a reaction structurally analogous to eukaryotic dopamine oxidation to DOPAC. This structural and chemical convergence suggests that HpaB may act on host-derived catecholamines. In vivo expression data, phylogenetic analysis, and gut colonization models for strains of human microbiota further the relevance of HpaB homologs in host-associated bacterial taxa. Notably, behavioral phenotypes in animal models resulting from host-associated strains overexpressing HpaB—such as impaired locomotion, altered sensory perception, and reproduction—mirror symptoms associated with dopaminergic imbalance. This work proposes a novel mechanism by which bacterial aromatic monooxygenases may deplete or modify host neurotransmitters in situ, with implications for host gut motility, immune function, and behavior. If validated through biochemical assays and animal models, HpaB could represent a novel enzyme-mediated mechanism at the interface of environmental metabolism and neurochemical regulation. The findings expand the conceptual framework of microbial endocrinology and open new avenues for targeting microbial enzymes to influence host neurological health

Being Asian American in Southern Appalachia: Counternarratives of Race and Space in Higher Education
The experiences of Asians and Asian Americans in the South and Appalachia have been historically overshadowed by the imagined bifurcated Black/white racial landscape of the South and the imagined homogenous white racial landscape of Appalachia. Students were interviewed through a semi-structured and dialogic approach and engaged through photovoice submissions. By examining college students’ experiences through guiding questions of how the geographic contexts of the South and Appalachia and the spatial context of a predominantly white institution (PWI) affect their experiences and perceptions of racial and cultural identity development, as well as how being Asian American affects their daily life at their PWI, it illuminates how geography, regionality, and race affects students’ identity and daily lives. This paper responds to a call by Asian American scholars to investigate the racialized experiences of Asian Americans east of California, particularly those of college students
