Losing Control: An Analysis of a Bipolar Disorder Communication Narrative
Get PDFThis narrative analysis focuses on the impact bipolar disorder has on relational communication from a first-person perspective. Focusing on the loss of control of communication and action during manic and/or depressive episode, this work aims to provide communicative markers that can be used to identify bipolar disorder quickly. An auto-ethnographical narrative served as the data for the study. The narrative was analyzed using thematic analysis by looking for recurrence, repetition, and forcefulness with respect to the communication examples.
By analyzing expectancy violation, dialectical tensions, boundaries, and social support, this work creates a deeper understanding of what it means to share private information during a bipolar break. Through the lens of communication privacy management theory, this work focuses on the lack of control one has during a bipolar break. This lack of control led to the theoretical implication that CPM is not present during a bipolar break due to the lack of control over one’s ability to manage communication.
The practical implications of this narrative analysis aim to provide caregivers, friends, family, and coworkers with the information necessary to help to those struggling with a bipolar break. While medical research is available, it is difficult to understand and not meant for a lay audience. This work aims to provide clear evidence that a bipolar break can be identified and managed through communication theory. Communication is a fundamental aspect of everyday life; therefore, the goal is to provide a communicative perspective that can help those struggling with bipolar disorder and those trying to help the struggling individuals
From Competition to Career: Examining Personality and Career Readiness in Transitioning Collegiate Student-Athletes
Get PDFWhile focus on student-athlete mental well-being continues to grow, there is limited scientific research on sport-retirement preparation. The transition from college sport to professional career creates unique challenges for student-athletes. These transitions are unique in their collective experiences as student-athletes, but also unique to each individual athlete, influenced by personality traits and motivational sources. Transitioning away from sport with strong work readiness skills upon entering the workforce is essential in fostering early career confidence and long-term success. Through the established theories of the Big Five Personality Model and Self-Determination Theory, this study hopes to address the gaps in understanding the personological and motivational relations with work readiness during this transitional period. This study uses a quantitative analysis through hierarchical regression to explore this relationship between personality, motivation, and work readiness. Findings show that the Big Five trait of openness as well as the narrow trait of self-directed learning act as significant positive predictors of work readiness. This study offers insights into how college athletic programs can better support student-athletes in their professional development by means of targeted interventions and programming
Paromomycin is a more effective selection agent than kanamycin in Arabidopsis harboring the neomycin phosphotransferase II transgene
No full textNeomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) is a selectable marker gene that is commonly used in plant molecular genetics and crop improvement, helping researchers to identify and select transgenically modified plants. The NPTII enzyme binds to and phosphorylates the aminoglycoside family of antibiotics, which are known translation inhibitors. Once the aminoglycoside is phosphorylated it is unable to bind to the ribosome and can no longer disrupt translation. Currently, the most widely used selection agent for screening NPTII expressing seedlings is kanamycin. Because the nptII transgene is frequently silenced epigenetically, kanamycin can be too toxic to seedlings that weakly express NPTII, leading to false negatives and making it harder to accurately identify transgenic plants. In this study we investigate the related aminoglycoside, paromomycin, as an alternative, non-lethal, selection agent to kanamycin across a series of transgenic Arabidopsis lines with varying NPTII expression. We investigated phenotypes of transgenic seedlings during and after antibiotic exposure. Seedling pigmentation and size are useful phenotypes for selecting seedlings with low nptII expression. Additionally, monitoring photosynthetic efficiency and flowering time can help reduce the risk of falsepositive results when treating seedlings with paromomycin

No full textThis study explores the role of film in teaching history within the context of Advanced Placement European History (APEURO) and examines the implications for cultural and academic curricula. The research begins with an exploration of the complex relationship between cultural representation in film and its impact on educational frameworks, particularly through the lens of the College Board and the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The primary objective of the study is to investigate how teachers use films in APEURO classrooms to enhance learning, focusing on both the pedagogical value and ethical considerations surrounding historical portrayals in films. Through qualitative methods, the study utilizes storytelling as a method of inquiry, reflecting on the positionality of educators and the responsibilities they bear in curating content. Thematic analysis of data from interviews with APEURO readers highlights key themes such as teachers as learners, teachers as educators, and the ethical use of films in the classroom. Findings emphasize the importance of film in fostering historical empathy, engaging students creatively, and facilitating deeper understanding, while also considering the limitations and ethical concerns that arise in the process. This study offers insights into how films can effectively blend academic and cultural history, as well as the challenges faced by teachers in navigating the intersection of entertainment, education, and historical metanarratives

Evaluating Transportation Policy Effectiveness: Empirical Evidence from Clean Truck Programs and Railroading Strategy
No full textAs freight transportation industries grapple with efficiency and sustainability, a critical question emerges: How do regulatory and operational strategies shape transportation performance, and what trade-offs do they introduce for efficiency, safety, and environmental impact? This dissertation explores these tensions through empirical research, leveraging econometric methods and theoretical frameworks to assess the consequences of regulatory interventions and operational restructuring. Essay 1 examines the effectiveness of Clean Truck Programs (CTPs) in accelerating fleet upgrades and reducing emissions in U.S. port drayage trucking. Using the Awareness-Motivation-Capability (AMC) framework and a Difference-in-Differences (DID) strategy, this study finds that mandatory programs significantly reduce the average model-year of drayage trucks, particularly among smaller carriers, whereas voluntary programs show no measurable impact, which contrast with prior research findings. Furthermore, air quality improvements are concentrated in inner harbor zones, raising concerns about potential pollution displacement to adjacent areas. Essay 2 investigates the consequences of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) on the operational and safety performance of Class 1 railroads in the U.S. Using archival data and an econometric framework; this study finds that PSR enhances efficiency—including a 30 – 40% reduction in workforce count and increased train length—but at a cost of increased derailment and accident rates. Utilizing Stakeholder Theory, this study contextualizes the trade-offs between shareholder-driven efficiency gains and workforce or public safety risks, underscoring the challenges of balancing operational improvements with safety concerns
