Mastering a second language as a theoretical and linguodidactic problem in the aspect of neuro-linguistics

    Get PDF
This article arose from the need to comprehend, firstly, methodological and linguodidactic problems (by linguodidactics we understand the principles of language description for learning purposes) to mastering any non-native language, not only widespread foreign languages, and, secondly, from the need to comprehend not only the teaching of a second foreign language itself but also the content of training professionals of a second foreign language (students of universities and faculties of foreign languages). Theoretical and methodological problems associated with mastering any non-native language are especially acute when we are dealing not with the first, but with the second, third, etc. non-native language. This may be a second foreign language (for example, at school), a second foreign language as the language of a pedagogical specialty (for example, at a pedagogical university), the language of ethnic (self) identification (among members of national diasporas), etc. Therefore, in this paper, along with discussing general issues of mastering a non-native language, we focus on various situations of teaching a language as a second non-native

Toni Morrison’s transgressive literary preaching and folk songs as postmemory

    Get PDF
This paper intends to study the sermons or ‘‘literary preaching’’ and folk songs in Toni Morrison’s fiction in the light of Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory. Drawing on Hirsch’s postmemory then, this paper articulates that the ‘‘literary preaching’’ and folk songs function within Morrison’s novelistic discourse as postmemory medium that presses against the erasure and the death of a culture and history. The folk songs and ‘‘literary preaching’’ are mediums of transgenerational transmission of trauma and history. Hirsch defines postmemory as the memories that the survivors of trauma bequeathed to their children and grandchildren. Hirsch presents photographs as the instrument through which postmemory is archived and conveyed. She talks about ‘‘photographic archive’’ since photographs can bring back their referents. In comparison, the sermons and folk songs are analyzed as ‘‘oral/aural archive’’, for they have the attribute of triggering memory and postmemory. Also, through her literary preaching, Morrison deconstructs and questions mainstream Christianity by blending it with unorthodox Christian practices. For example, Baby Suggs’ sermon in Beloved gives precedence to the flesh over the spirit, and this sermon is remembered throughout the text as a subdued metaphor

Syllabic constraints in ekegusii borrowing: an optimality perspective

    Get PDF
A language’s syllabic structure is key in determining linguistic borrowing. Research on loanword phonology indicates that when languages borrow segments, these borrowed segments undergo systematic adaptations which involve phonological structures at various levels and one of these is the syllabic level. Because languages have varied syllabic structures which will range from very simple to complex, a language’s syllabic structure will trigger repair strategies that ensure that its language phonotactics are not violated. However, how the syllable in Ekegusii constrains borrowing from English has not been adequately explained.  This article that was based on Optimality Theory’s constraint approach examined how Ekegusii’s syllable structure constrains borrowing from the English language. The data used in this article was extracted from Mose’s doctoral study. The findings revealed that the Ekegusii syllable structure imposed various constraints spread across the three patterns which are permissible in the language. The specific constraints included: prohibition of cluster consonants, diphthongs or triphthongs, no coda consonants, and complex onsets, as well as syllables, must have onsets that were lowly ranked in the language. The article concluded that syllabic constraints determined that whatever was mapped to Ekegusii adhered to its syllable structure

Isolated photovoltaic system for house: pre-sizing

    Get PDF
Photovoltaic solar energy is a clean renewable energy source that allows obtaining electricity directly from solar radiation through semiconductor devices called photovoltaic cells. The present research aims to pre-design an isolated system for a house that can serve as a pattern for the electrification of houses that today do not have power in the province of Manabí. To carry out the proposal, the PVsyst was used, a tool for sizing the system, in addition to the bibliographic review, the qualitative-quantitative, and the inductive deductive. It was obtained as a result that photovoltaic solar energy is adequate to provide a solution to isolated homes that today do not have energy service, in addition to those that have a poor quality of service

    Get PDF
Diabetes mellitus hyperglycemia is a chronic disease characterized by the absence of insulin or a relative decrease in cell insensitivity to insulin that requires continuous treatment and ongoing self-management to prevent acute complications and reduce the risk of chronic complications. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is particularly by physical activity. This study aims to understand the difference between two exercise regimens on blood glucose levels reduction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test control group design. 60 respondents were selected via random sampling and divided evenly into two groups of 30 individuals: 1) the treatment group; and 2) the control group. A Wilcoxon test performed on the treatment group yielded P-value = 0,005 < ? = 0,05 and a Wilcoxon test performed on the control group yielded P-value = 0,046 < ? = 0,05. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that physical activity has an effect of reducing blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and, when comparing the differences in blood glucose level reduction, a combined regimen of putu sila and Tai Chi is more effective than Tai Chi alone
