Janine Stingel, From Father to Son: Canadian Jewry’s 
Response to the Alberta Social Credit Party and the Reform
Party of Canada
This article examines the response of the Canadian Jewish
Congress to the anti-Semitic propaganda within the Social Credit
movement in Alberta under Ernest Manning in the 1940s, and its
response to the Reform Party of Canada’s right-wing agenda and
incidents of intolerance under his son, Preston Manning, in the
1990s. The article discusses how the national representative orga-
nization for Canadian Jewry evolved and matured in the postwar
period so that its passive, ineffective approach to Social Credit’s
intolerance was replaced by an unequivocal and public question-
ing of the Reform Party’s agenda. It argues that Preston Manning
learned from his father’s errors regarding anti-Semitism within
populist parties, and resolved that his party would not fall prey to
such intolerance. Similarly, the Canadian Jewish Congress was
determined to confront the Reform Party in a manner which it
had been unable to muster against Social Credit in the 1940s.
Janine Stingel, Du père au fils : la réaction juive au Parti du
Crédit social albertain et au Parti de la Réforme canadien
Cet article se propose d’étudier la réaction du Congrès juif
canadien à la propagande antisémite diffusée au cours des
années quarante par le mouvement du Crédit social albertain
sous Ernest Manning. Il s’intéresse aussi aux opinions de 
droite professées au cours des années quatre-vingt-dix par le
fils du précédent, Preston Manning, et aux incidents qui 
eurent lieu sous son leadership. L’auteur montre comment cette
organisation représentative du judaïsme pan-canadien évolua
au cours de l’après-guerre, de telle manière que son attitude
attentiste et inefficace face aux accents d’intolérance du Crédit
social, se muta en une campagne publique et agressive contre le
programme défendu par le Parti de la Réforme. L’article avance
aussi l’idée que Preston Manning a appris des erreurs commis-
es par son père concernant les opinions antisémites véhiculées
par les mouvements populistes, et qu’il prit la décision de tenir
son parti à l’abri de tels abus. De même, le Congrès juif cana-
dien avait résolu à la même époque d’affronter le Parti de la
Réforme sur ces questions, avec un aplomb dont il n’avait pas

Rebecca E. Margolis, A Tempest in Three Teapots: Yom Kippur
Balls in London, New York, and Montreal 
For at least two decades beginning in 1888, Jewish anarchists 
in Jewish immigrant centers held annual Yom Kippur balls, 
featuring antireligious speeches and recitations, music and
dancing, and refreshments. These events, which took place on
the most holy day of the Jewish year, the Day of Atonement,
served as a mass demonstration against what the anarchists 
perceived as the evils of religion. The Yom Kippur balls faced
wide protest from the established Jewish communities in which
they were held and received wide coverage in the Jewish and
non-Jewish press. This paper will examine the evolution and
subsequent decline of the Yom Kippur balls in London, New
York, and Montreal. It will discuss the factors that led 
to the rise and fall of the Yom Kippur ball while placing its
development within a broader historical framework.

Rebecca E. Margolis, Une tempête dans trois verres d’eau : les
banquets du Yom Kippour à Londres, New York et Montréal
Durant au moins trois décennies, à partir de 1888, des anar-
chistes juifs ont tenu, le jour du Yom Kippour, des banquets dans
des villes où se trouvaient concentrés un grand nombre d’immi-
grants juifs. Au cours de ces fêtes, des textes antireligieux furent
lus et des discours prononcés, pendant que l’on offrait des
rafraîchissements, de la musique et une occasion de danser aux
convives. Ces événements, qui eurent lieu durant le jour le plus
sacré de l’année juive, lors du Grand Pardon, furent utilisés
comme des démonstrations de masse contre ce que les anar-
chistes percevaient comme l’influence néfaste de la religion. Les
banquets du Yom Kippour provoquèrent de vives réactions de
protestation de la part des communautés juives établies, et furent
largement répercutés dans la presse juive et non-juive. Cet 
article examinera l’évolution et le déclin subséquent de ces 
manifestations antireligieuses à Londres, New York et Montréal.
On y analysera également les facteurs qui ont conduit à l’ap-
parition de ces banquets ainsi que leur abandon graduel, toujours
dans le cadre d’un contexte historique plus vaste.
Joseph B. Glass, Isolation and Alienation: Factors in the
Growth of Zionism in the Canadian Prairies, 1917-1939
Diverse local influences during the interwar years set Zionism in
the Prairies apart from Zionism in other regions of the North
America and the rest of the world. Membership in Zionist orga-
nizations in the Prairies grew rapidly in proportion, far beyond
other areas in North America. Foundations for a strong Zionist
movement had been established before World War I, but with 
the 1920s and 1930s came an unprecedented expansion.
Furthermore, the per capita rate of immigration to Palestine from
the Prairies exceeded the continental rate by at least five times.
Explanations for the expansion of this ideological movement are

drawn from the special nature and role played by Zionism in 
this region resulting from the unique physical and social envi-
ronment. In more general terms, a rural population or a sparsely
distributed population was the breeding ground for the nurturing
of a distinct form of Zionism.
Zionism took on three important roles in local Jewish
society. First, Zionism became an instrument through which
Jewish society in the Prairies combated the sense of isolation.
Second, Zionism became an instrument for the sustaining of
Jewish education in the prairies, particularly in areas of smaller
Jewish concentrations. Third, Zionism became an important
dream and possibly a practical outlet for frustrations and 
difficulties in the Prairies through its fulfillment by aliyah
(immigration to Eretz Israel). 
This article describes the unique nature of Zionism in the
Prairies. Discussed are various factors that molded this form 
of Zionism—antisemitism, assimilation and isolation and 
alienation. Outlined is the development of the ideological move-
ment in this region. Various facets of local Zionism—social,
philanthropic, educational, and migrational—are then analyzed.
Joseph B. Glass, Isolation et l’aliénation comme facteurs de
croissance du mouvement sioniste dans la région des Prairies
canadiennes, 1917-1939
Durant la période de l’entre-deux-guerres, un certain nombre de
facteurs permirent au mouvement sioniste présent dans la région
des Prairies de se distinguer de ses équivalents en Amérique du
Nord et ailleurs dans le monde. En proportion, le membership
dans les organisations sionistes grandit beaucoup plus rapide-
ment dans les Prairies qu’ailleurs en Amérique du Nord. Même
si les bases du sionisme avaient été jetées dans cette région avant
la Première Guerre mondiale, la période de croissance la plus
forte eut lieu au cours des années vingt et trente. Qui plus est, le
taux d’immigration vers la Palestine était cinq fois plus élevé
dans les Prairies que la moyenne continentale. Les raisons
avancées pour expliquer le succès de ce courant idéologique
dans l’Ouest canadien ont à faire avec le caractère spécifique 
du sionisme dans la région, et le rôle joué par ce mouvement
dans une société aux caractéristiques bien particulières. En
somme, un habitat rural ou une population très dispersée sur le
plan géographique, s’avérèrent un milieu hautement propice à
l’apparition de cette forme distincte de sionisme.
Le sionisme a eu un impact à trois niveaux bien précis 
au sein des communautés juives locales. Il a d’abord été un
instrument qui a permis aux Juifs des Prairies de lutter contre un
certain sens d’isolement. Le sionisme a ensuite servi à appuyer
les efforts en vue d’une éducation juive dans la région, tout par-
ticulièrement dans les localités les plus petites. Finalement, cette
idéologie a été pour plusieurs une occasion de rêver et de
s’échapper à travers l’aliyah des frustrations et des difficultés de
la vie dans les Prairies. 
Cet article décrit la nature unique du sionisme dans les
Prairies. Il présente aussi les différents facteurs qui ont influencé
cette forme de sionisme bien particulière, comme l’an-
tisémitisme, l’assimilation, l’isolement et l’aliénation. L’auteur
en profite pour expliquer le développement du mouvement dans
la région et pour analyser ses facettes sociales,
