Frank Guttman is professor emeritus of Pediatric Surgery at
McGill University and former head of the department at
the Montreal Children’s Hospital.  In medicine, he is the
author of over 100 papers and eleven book chapters.  Since
his retirement, he has earned an MA in history from
McGill University. His main interest is in Quebec history.
Esther Carmel-Hakim, a member of Kibbutz Ramat HaShofet,
is a lecturer in Land of Israel Studies at the University
of Haifa and at the Jezreel Valley Academic College.
Her doctoral dissertation deals with Women’s Agricultural
Training in the Yishuv. At present, she is researching
Zionist women’s organizations.
Steven Lapidus, former co-curator of the Montreal Holocaust
Memorial Centre, is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the
Department of Religion at Concordia University.  His
dissertation focuses on the history and evolution of the
Montreal Jewish Community Council.
Loren Lerner, professor of Art History at Concordia
University, edited Afterimage: Evocations of the
Holocaust in Contemporary Canadian Arts and Literature/
Rémanences: Evocations de l’Holocauste dans les arts
et littérature canadiens contemporains (Montreal,
2002).  She has curated the exhibitions, Memories and
Testimonies/Memoires et Témoignages (Montreal, 2002)
and Sam Borenstein (Montreal, 2005). 
Joshua D. MacFadyen is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the
University of Guelph. He is writing a dissertation on the
linen industry in Canada, and his interests include the
Contributors/Collaborateurs 147
history of ethnic groups and immigration in Canada.  He
has written on Irish immigrants and on the Jewish com-
munity in Québec.
Benjamin Schlesinger, professor emeritus at the Faculty of
Social Work of the University of Toronto, is the author
or editor of 26 books, some with Rachel Schlesinger.
He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. 
Rachel Schlesinger is a senior scholar at the Division of Social
Sciences, York University and a member of the execu-
tive committee of Centre for Jewish Studies there. Her
main area of research interest is gerontology with a
focus on senior Jewish women.

Steven Lapidus, The Forgotten Hasidim: Rabbis and Rebbes in
Prewar Canada
Historians of Canadian Jewry in the pre-Second-World-War era
have underplayed or ignored the significance of immigrant
Hasidic life, and some have denied its very existence. In fact,
however, Hasidic rabbis, rebbes, and laypeople came to Canada
beginning in the 1880s and established communities and syna-
gogues. This paper challenges the accepted historical narrative
by describing the Hasidic infrastructure in Canada before World
War II. It also addresses the question of why this phenomenon
has been overlooked, focusing on issues such as idealization of
the shtetl, ideological and demographic differences among the
prewar and postwar arrivals, and historians’ focus on trans-
formation rather than continuity in the history of Jewish
immigration to Canada.
Steven Lapidus, Le Hassidisme oublié: les rabbins et les rebbes
dans le Canada d’avant-guerre
Les historiens de la communauté juive canadienne de la période
précédant la Seconde Guerre mondiale ont sous-estimé ou ignoré
la signification de la vie hassidique immigrante. Certains ont nié
jusqu’à son existence. Cependant, les hassidiques rabbins et
laïques ont commencé à arriver au Canada dès les années 1880
et ils y établirent des communautés et des synagogues. Ce texte
remet en question le récit historique traditionnel en décrivant
les infrastructures hassidiques au Canada avant la Seconde
Guerre mondiale. Il questionne également les causes de la
négligence de ce phénomène en mettant l’accent sur l’idéalisa-
tion de la shtetl et sur les différences idéologiques et
démographiques entre ceux qui sont arrivés avant la guerre et

ceux qui sont arrivés après la guerre. Il questionne également
l’accent des historiens sur les transformations plutôt que sur les
continuités dans l’histoire de l’immigration juive au Canada. 
Loren Lerner, Sam Borenstein, Artist and Art Dealer: The
Polemics of Post-Holocaust Jewish Cultural Identity
Sam Borenstein was a modern expressionist artist active from
the 1930s to the 1960s. His conflicted feelings about his
Jewishness are most apparent in the portraits of his father, a
rabbinical scholar with whom he immigrated to Montreal from
Poland in 1921. Borenstein found emotional and intellectual
sustenance in a circle of Jewish artists and friends who were
part of Montreal’s vibrant Yiddish-speaking community and in
the friendship of Marius Barbeau, the founder of Canadian folk-
lore studies. He admired the paintings of Chaim Soutine, whose
biography resembled his own. As an art dealer, Borenstein
acquired Jewish ceremonial objects for the Aron Museum at
Temple Emanu-El. Borenstein’s paintings linked his childhood
memories to the sense of well-being he derived from Quebec’s
rural society.
Loren Lerner, Sam Borenstein, Artiste et commerçant d’art : Les
polémiques de l’identité culturelle juive post-Holocauste
Sam Borenstein était un artiste expressionniste moderne actif
des années 1930 aux années 1960. Ses sentiments partagés à
l’égard de sa culture juive ressortent clairement dans les
portraits de son père, un érudit rabbinique avec qui il émigra de
la Pologne à Montréal en 1921. Borenstein trouva 
un appui émotif et intellectuel dans un cercle d’artistes et
d’amis au sein de la vibrante communauté Yiddish
montréalaise, ainsi que dans l’amitié de Marius Barbeau, le
fondateur des études du folklore canadien. Il admirait les pein-
tures de Chaim Soutine, dont l’histoire ressemble à la sienne.
Commerçant dans le domaine de l’art, Borenstein acquit des

objets cérémoniaux juifs pour le Musée Aron au Temple
Emanu-El. Les peintures de Borenstein tissent un lien entre ses
souvenirs d’enfance et le sentiment de bien-être que lui inspira
la société rurale du Québec.  
Frank Myron Guttman, The Hebrew Free Loan Association of
Montreal
This study describes the history of the Montreal Hebrew Free
Loan Association (HFLA). It considers changes in clientele,
policy, the purpose of loans, and leadership over the years,
questioning whether the HFLA, which has lent almost
$100,000,000 since its founding in 1911, has been an expres-
sion of traditional, Jewish, immigrant culture or a reflection of
adaptation to the new surroundings.

Cette étude décrit l’histoire de l’Association Hébraïque des Prêts
Libres de Montréal—Montreal Hebrew Free Loan Association
(HFLA). L’étude porte sur les changements de clientèle, de
politiques, de raisons des prêts et de leadership à travers les
années, afin de savoir si l’association, qui a prêté près de 100
000 000 de dollars depuis sa fondation en 1911, a été l’expres-
sion de la culture immigrante juive traditionnelle ou si elle est
le reflet d’une adaptation à son nouvel environnement. 
Joshua D. MacFadyen, “Nip the Noxious Growth in the Bud”:
Ortenberg V. Plamondon and the Roots of Canadian Anti-Hate
Activism
A re-examination of the Plamondon affair in Quebec, that sees
it as an early way-station on Canada’s path to anti-hate legisla-
tion. Plamondon delivered a lecture in 1910, which prompted
two Quebec City Jews to file a libel suit against him, even

though there was no legal protection against group defamation at
that time in Canada. The plaintiffs were able to demonstrate that
the accusations were false and that Plamondon had caused direct
and individual damage to the Jews of Quebec. The suit was first
dismissed, but the Court of Appeal reversed the judgement. The
decision did not set a precedent, although it pointed the way
from grassroots protest to the legal protection of civil rights.
Joshua D. MacFadyen, “Arracher la mauvaise herbe par la
racine”: Ortenberg V. Plamondon et les racines de l’activisme
anti-haine au Canada
Cette réinterprétation de l’Affaire Plamondon au Québec y
décèle un antécédent à la voie canadienne en matière de légis-
lation anti-haineuse. Une conférence, prononcée par
Plamondon en 1910, incita deux juifs de la ville de Québec à
remplir une poursuite en libelle contre lui, en dépit de l’absence
de protection légale contre la diffamation envers les groupes à
cette époque au Canada. Les plaignants parvinrent à démontrer
que les accusations étaient fausses et que Plamondon avait
causé des dommages individuels directs aux juifs de la ville
Québec. La poursuite a d’abord été rejetée, mais la Cours d’ap-
pel renversa le jugement. La décision ne créa pas un précédent.
Cependant, elle montra la voie entre les protestations populaires
et la protection légale des droits civils. 
Esther Carmel Hakim, Canadian Hadassah-WIZO and the
Establishment of the Women’s Agricultural School at Nahalal
A discussion of an aspect of agricultural training for women in
Eretz Yisrael [the land of Israel] in the first decades of the twen-
tieth century. Canadian Hadassah/WIZO made a unique
contribution to the establishment of agricultural training
programmes for women in Eretz Yisrael through its help in the
creation and maintenance of the first agricultural school for
women founded there in 1923. This collaboration between the

women pioneers in Eretz Yisrael and Jewish women in Canada
stemmed from a mutual conviction that women could best
depend upon other women to carry out projects designed to
improve women’s conditions and status.

lissement de l’École agricole pour les femmes à Nahalal
Ce texte consiste en une discussion d’un aspect de l’entraîne-
ment agricole des femmes à Eretz Yisrael [la terre d’Israel]
durant les premières décennies du vingtième siècle. Le
Hadassah/WIZO canadien fit une contribution unique à l’étab-
lissement de programmes d’entraînement agricole pour les
femmes à Eretz Yisrael, grâce à son aide à la création et au
maintien de la première école agricole pour femme qui y fut
fondée en 1923. Cette collaboration entre les femmes
pionnières à Eretz Yisrael et les femmes juives au Canada
émergea de la conviction mutuelle que les femmes auraient
intérêts à dépendre d’autres femmes pour mener des projets
destinés à améliorer les conditions et le statut des femmes.  
Rachel Aber Schlesinger and Benjamin Schlesinger, Jewish
Adult Grandchildren and Their Grandparents
A study of 35 female Jewish students at York University in
Toronto during the 2001-02 academic year, who are adult
grandchildren. Through a questionnaire, their relationship to
their grandparents was explored, and the paper discusses the
importance of such relationships to Jewish family life in the
twenty-first century.

et leurs grands-parents
Ce texte est une étude de 35 étudiantes adultes juives de
l’Université York à Toronto, durant l’année académique 2001-

02, qui ont des grands-parents. Leur relation avec leur grands-
parents furent explorées à travers un questionnaire. Ce texte
discute de l’importance de ces relations pour la vie familiale
juive au vingt-et-unième siècle.
