Jean-Philippe Croteau is a professor of History at the
University of Hearst, Ontario. He has published articles
on questions relating to the educational integration of
Montreal’s Jewish community, and the financing and
development of high school teaching in Quebec’s public
schools. His current research and publication deals with
the development of public education, the emergence of
liberal ideologies at the turn of the twentieth century in
Quebec and Ontario and with the scholastic integration
of immigrants in Montreal and Toronto.

questions de l’intégration scolaire de la communauté
juive à Montréal, du financement des écoles publiques et
du développement de l’enseignement secondaire public au
Québec. Ses travaux et ses recherches portent actuelle-

l’émergence des idéologies libérales au tournant du XXe
siècle au Québec et en Ontario et sur l’intégration
scolaire des immigrants à Montréal et à Toronto.
Sharon Gubbay Helfer is a postdoctoral research fellow at the
Université de Montréal, where she is working on an oral
history of pioneers of interreligious and intercultural
dialogue in Quebec. An oral historian with a doctorate in
Jewish Studies from Concordia, her recent projects include
a study of Ontario’s small Jewish community for the
Ontario Jewish Archives, a study of Montreal’s Spanish
and Portuguese Synagogue for Laval University’s Projet
d’inventaire du patrimoine immattériel religieux du

Québec, and research on shared values for the Bouchard-
Taylor Commission. She is also involved in community
life, where she has just completed a two-year mandate,
together with Mohammed Liaqat Ashraf of the Montreal
Dialogue Group.
Sharon Gubbay Helfer est chercheuse universitaire au niveau
postdoctoral à l’Université de Montréal, où elle travaille
sur l’histoire orale des pionniers du dialogue interre-
ligieux et interculturel au Québec. Cette spécialiste de
l’histoire orale détient un doctorat en études juives de
l’Université Concordia. Parmi ses récents travaux, on
retrouve une étude de la petite communauté juive de
l’Ontario pour le compte des Ontario Jewish Archives,
une étude de la synagogue Spanish & Portuguese de
Montréal pour le Projet d’inventaire du patrimoine
immattériel religieux du Québec de l’Université Laval
et une recherche sur les valeurs communes pour la
Commission Bouchard-Taylor. Elle participe aussi à la
vie communautaire, ayant terminé un mandat de
coprésidence de deux ans, avec Mohammed Liaqat
Ashraf, du Groupe Dialogue Montréal.
Donna Goodman is Ph.D. candidate in the Department of
Religion at Concordia University. Her Master’s thesis
was entitled, “Montreal Synagogue Sisterhoods (1900-
1949): A Female Culture, Community, and Religious
World.” Her present research interest is in food studies,
focusing on the lives of Jewish women in Canada
through the window of Canadian Jewish cookbooks.
Donna Goodman est candidate au doctorat au département de
religion de l’Université Concordia. Sa thèse de maîtrise
portait le titre « Montreal Synagogue Sisterhoods
(1900-1949): A Female Culture, Community, and

Dana Herman recently received her Ph.D. in modern Jewish
history from McGill University. She currently serves as
managing editor of The American Jewish Archives
Journal and senior academic associate at The Jacob
Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives
in Cincinnati, Ohio. 
Dana Herman a récemment obtenu son doctorat en histoire
juive moderne de l’Université McGill. Elle occupe
actuellement les postes de rédactrice en chef de The
American Jewish Archives Journal et de chercheuse

Susan Landau-Chark is a teacher and independent researcher.
Her doctoral thesis (2008) “Community, Identity, and
Religious Leadership as Expressed through the Role of
the Rabbi’s Wife” examines the place of the contempo-
rary Canadian congregational rabbinical wife. 
Susan Landau-Chark est professeure et chercheuse indépen-
dante. Sa thèse de doctorat, « Community, Identity, and
Religious Leadership as Expressed through the Role of
the Rabbi’s Wife » (2008), examine la place de la
femme de rabbin dans le Canada contemporain. 
Steven Lapidus, former co-curator of the Montreal Holocaust
Memorial Centre, is a doctoral candidate in Religious
Studies at Concordia University. While his primary
focus is on the history of North American Orthodoxy, he
has conducted research and taught on a variety of topics
in the study of religion. A recipient of more than a dozen

scholarships and awards, he is also the author of several
articles in the field of Canadian Jewish history in both
English and French. He is currently completing his
dissertation on the Vaad Ha’ir and the challenges of
Orthodoxy in mid-twentieth century Montreal.
Steven Lapidus, ancien co-conservateur du Centre commé-
moratif de l’Holocauste à Montréal, est candidat au
doctorat en Études religieuses à l’Université Concordia.
Bien qu’il se penche principalement sur l’histoire de
l’orthodoxie en Amérique du Nord, il a également 
mené des recherches et enseigné dans divers sujets
touchant à la religion. Lauréat de plus d’une dizaine de
bourses et de prix, il est l’auteur de plusieurs articles,
tant en anglais qu’en français, sur l’histoire juive au
Canada. Il termine actuellement sa dissertation sur le
Vaad Ha’ir et les défis de l’orthodoxie au milieu du XXe
siècle à Montréal. 
Rebecca Margolis is assistant professor in the Vered Jewish
Canadian Studies Program at the University of Ottawa.
Her most recent research on Yiddish Canada has
appeared in Traduire le Montreal Yiddish / New
Readings of Yiddish Montreal as well as Shofar, the
Journal of Popular Religion, and the Journal of
Canadian Studies. She is currently working on a study
about Canadian responses to the Holocaust, 1933-1965.
Rebecca Margolis est professeure adjointe au sein du Programme

Christine Poirier holds a Master’s degree in French Literature
from McGill University. After having studied Yiddish, she
moved away from the literary milieu to run Momzelle
(www.momzelle.com), a nursing clothing company.

Barbara Weiser is an independent scholar currently conduct-
ing a study of material culture in Canadian synagogues.
A graduate of Concordia University, she writes about
installations of ritual art in communities across Canada
and sits on the advisory committees of the Aron
Museum at Temple Emanuel-Beth Shalom and the Emet
Gallery at Congregation Dorshei Emet in Montreal. 
Barbara Weiser est chercheuse indépendante et mène actuelle-
ment une étude de la culture matérielle dans les
synagogues canadiennes (http://www.cjvma.org/e/).
Diplômée de l’Université Concordia, elle rédige des
articles portant sur les installations d’art cérémoniel

Ida E. Berger, Itay Greenspan, and Dara Kohn. Identity Re-Creation
through Recreation: The Case of the Alyn Charity Bike Ride.
In November 2005, Ida Berger, one of the authors of this study,
participated in the Sixth Alyn Hospital “Wheels of Love” char-
ity bike ride to raise funds for an Israeli children’s hospital. The
paper focuses on the role of international charity sporting
events in the creation and re-creation of participants’ feelings,
identities, and self-perceptions. The study analyzes personal
interviews with fourteen Toronto-based riders before and after
the ride, as well as other field data, to understand the meanings
enacted and acquired through the experience. The case is inter-
esting, because foreign participants invested significant time
and money, and demonstrated strong motivation and commit-
ment to riding, the hospital, and Israel. The event presented a
rich array of potential identity inputs, including health, athlet-
ics, altruism, philanthropy, travel, and Jewishness making it a
particularly valuable research site.

En novembre 2005, Ida Berger, une des auteurs de cette étude,
participa au sixième tour de bicyclette caritatif “Wheels of
Love” organisé par l’Hôpital Alyn, afin de lever des fonds pour
l’hôpital pour enfants israéliens handicapés. Cet article met
l’accent sur le rôle des événements sportifs et caritatifs interna-
tionaux dans la création et la reproduction de sentiments,
d’identités et des représentations de soi chez leurs participants.
L’étude analyse des entretiens personnels avec quatorze partic-
ipants basés à Toronto avant et après l’événement, ainsi que
d’autres données, afin de comprendre le sens acquis à travers

l’expérience. Ce cas est intéressant parce que les participants
étrangers investissent beaucoup de temps et d’argent, et démon-
trent beaucoup de motivations et d’engagement à l’endroit du
cyclisme, de l’hôpital et d’Israël. L’événement permet de mettre
en relief un vaste panorama d’éléments potentiellement consti-
tutifs de l’identité: la santé, l’athlétisme, l’altruisme, la
philanthropie et le voyage. La judéité en fait un lieu de
recherche particulièrement pertinent.
Eve Lerner. Soft Hands for the Seder: The Gender of Advertis-
ing in the Keneder Adler, 1920-1935.
The inter-war period in Canada marked the advent of a society
of mass consumption and the maturation of a generation of
Yiddish-speaking immigrants. This paper argues that images
and captions from advertising in the Yiddish-language,
Montreal daily, Der Keneder Adler, gave a generation of immi-
grant women an “identity construction kit” from which to
refashion themselves as modern Jewish women. The adver-
tisements were in many ways a mirror of Canadian society.
They also offered multiple images of Jewish femaleness, draw-
ing their readers into a common North-American discourse of
individualism and providing them with the ideal of the modern
female as a woman of leisure. The advertisements may have
contributed to the compartmentalization of Jewish ritual and to
the alienation of women from it.
Eve Lerner. Soft Hands for the Seder: The Gender of Advertising
in the Keneder Adler, 1920-1935.
La période de l’entre-deux-guerres au Canada marqua l’avène-
ment d’une société de consommation de masse et la maturation
d’une génération d’immigrants parlant le Yiddish. Cet article
soutient que les images des publicités dans le journal Yiddish
montréalais, Der Keneder Adler, donna à une génération de
femmes immigrantes des «outils de construction identitaires» à

partir desquels elles se réinventèrent comme femmes juives
modernes. Ces publicités étaient à plusieurs égards des miroirs
de la société canadienne. Elles offraient également des images
de la féminité juive incorporant les lectrices à un discours nord-
américain d’individualisme et fournissant un idéal de féminité
moderne fortement associée à un style de vie centré sur les
loisirs. Ces publicités pourraient avoir contribué au comparti-
mentage des rituels juifs et à l’aliénation des femmes par
rapport à ces derniers. 
Frédérick Guillaume Dufour and Mélanie Roy. l’Education de
l’Holocauste et de l’antiracisme face au défi de l’hétérogénéité:
analyse d’une formation pédagogique tri-nationale.
Between 2001 and 2009, more than 140 students from Canada,
Germany and Poland will have taken part in an education
programme offered by York University in Holocaust and anti-
racism education. This paper written by two former participants
in the programme gives an overview of the programme, its
pedagogical content, and the ethical issues that it raises which
are related to studying the Holocaust in multicultural contexts.
Frédérick Guillaume Dufour et Mélanie Roy. l’Education de
l’Holocauste et de l’antiracisme face au défi de l’hétérogénéité:
analyse d’une formation pédagogique tri-nationale.
De 2001 à 2009, plus de 140 étudiants canadiens, allemands et
polonais ont participé un programme mis sur pied à l’université
York portant sur l’éducation de l’Holocauste et antiraciste. Cet
article, redigé par deux anciens participants au programme de
différentes années, propose un survol de ce programme, de son
contenu pédagogique, des enjeux éthiques qu’ils soulèvent liés
à l’histoire de l’Holocauste dans des contextes multiculturels.

Ellen Scheinberg and Stephen Scheinberg.  One Bright Light: The
Canadian-Jewish Community and the Threat of Deportation,
1946-1956.
This article examines the Jewish community’s effective
response in the immediate post-Second-World-War period to
the attempt of the Canadian government to deport Jewish immi-
grants who had allegedly violated the Immigration Act. Many
of these candidates for deportation were survivors who had
spent months in Displaced Persons Camps before eventually
being admitted to Canada. Although the community was unable
to save more than a few Jews during the war or to bring signif-
icant numbers of survivors to Canada after the war, experienced
and professional community agencies were quite successful in
thwarting the attempts of the Immigration Branch to deport
Jews back to Europe. 
Ellen Scheinberg and Stephen Scheinberg. One Bright Light:
The Canadian-Jewish Community and the Threat of
Deportation, 1946-1956.
L’article examine la réponse de la communauté juive, à la suite
de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, à la tentative du gouvernement
canadien de déporter des immigrants juifs qui avaient été
accusés de violer la Loi sur l’immigration. Plusieurs de ces
candidats à la déportation étaient des survivants qui avaient
passés des mois dans des camps de personnes déplacées avant
d’être admis au Canada. En dépit du fait que la communauté 
fut incapable de sauver davantage qu’une poignée de juifs
durant la guerre, ou d’amener un nombre significatifs de
survivants au Canada après la guerre, les agences profession-
nelles de la communauté eurent davantage de succès à
empêcher les tentatives des officiels de l’immigration à
déporter des juifs en Europe.

Stuart Schoenfeld, Joan Schoenfeld and Gail McCabe. From
Diaspora to Diaspora: South African Jewish Immigration to
Canada. 
From the 1960s to the 1980s, a large part of the Jewish popula-
tion of South Africa left for a number of destinations, including
Israel and Canada. This study, based on a survey of 243 Jewish
migrants who chose to go to Canada, examines their lives as a
diaspora community in South Africa, their perceptions of the
advantages and disadvantages of migration to Canada and
Israel, and their feelings about Israel. The interpretation of find-
ings explores aspects of the Jewish experience in terms of
changing understandings of diaspora relationships and of life in
the Diaspora.
Stuart Schoenfeld, Joan Schoenfeld and Gail McCabe. From
Diaspora to Diaspora: South African Jewish Immigration to
Canada. 
Des années 1960 aux années 1980, une importante partie de la
population juive d’Afrique du Sud quitta le pays pour plusieurs
destinations, comprenant Israël et le Canada. Cette étude, basée
sur un sondage adressé à 243 migrants Juifs qui décidèrent de
s’établir au Canada, examine leur vie en tant que diaspora sud-
africaine. Elle se penche également sur leurs perceptions des
avantages et des inconvénients de migrer vers le Canada ou
Israël, et leurs sentiments à l’égard d’Israël. L’interprétation des
résultats explore des aspects de leur expérience juive au niveau
des compréhensions changeantes des relations de la diaspora et

Ira Robinson. The Canadian Years of Yehuda Kaufman (Even
Shmuel): Educator, Juornalist, and Intellectual.
Between 1913 and 1917, Yehudah Kaufman (Even Shmuel),
one of the most interesting Judaic scholars of the twentieth

century, a scholarly researcher, journalist, and teacher, lived in
Montreal. Although just an interlude in his long life (1886-
1976), his Montreal years were very productive. In that brief
period, he contributed significantly to the nascent educational,
cultural, and political institutions of the Canadian-Jewish
community, including the Jewish People’s Schools, the
Montreal Jewish People’s [Public] Library, and the Canadian
Jewish Congress.
Ira Robinson. The Canadian Years of Yehuda Kaufman (Even
Shmuel): Educator, Journalist, and Intellectual. 
Entre 1913 et 1917, Yehudah Kaufman (Even Shmuel), un 
des plus intéressants lettrés sur le Judaïsme au vingtième siècle,
un chercheur, journaliste et instituteur, vivait à Montréal. 
Bien qu’il n’y fut qu’une courte période de sa longue vie (1886-
1976), ses années à Montréal furent très productives. Durant
cette brève période, il participa de façon significative au
développement des institutions éducatives, culturelles et poli-
tiques émergentes de la communauté juive canadienne. Il
contribua notamment aux réseaux des Jewish People’s Schools,
à la Bibliothèque publique juive de Montréal, et au Congrès 
juif canadien.
