Co-redefining and co-creating Academic literacies in PhD education: Insights from a project at Umeå University Library, Sweden

    No full text
Our presentation discusses the practices and findings from a PhD workshop series at the Academic Resource Centre, Umeå University Library, Sweden. The partnership between librarians, writing tutors/researchers in supporting PhD research has recently become a new reality with Information Literacy courses offered as tools for resources and searching (Hassani, 2015; Paasio & Hintikka, 2015; Garson,2016). The insights from our course contribute to this literature by re-conceptualizing “academic literacy”, including Information Literacy, in doctoral education. Adopting Academic Literacies (Lea & Street, 1998, 2006) as our workshops’ underlying framework, we propose literacy beyond individual, transferable cognitive skills of writing and reading. Rather, it is an interrelated, dynamic, and situated set of knowledge, skills, and personal attributes that help PhD students acculturate into disciplinary discourses, the academic community, and wider social contexts. Our course approaches literacy holistically as comprising Research competence, Information literacy, and Academic English, with consideration to social processes (power, identity, and authority). The workshops cover critical reading, the literature review, writing abstract, communicating research and writing papers, but the PhD students are also encouraged to make sense of their writing by having critical, inquiry-based reflections about themselves, academia, and social discourses. The results from the first three workshop seasons emphasize knowledge co-creation – between academic librarians and researchers, and between workshop instructors and PhD students, as one key principle in developing academic literacies. The findings indicate that Information Literacy can be seen beyond tools and resources but rather a springboard that stimulates PhD students’ critical thinking in their becoming researchers. The positive feedback from the participants also gives the rationale for the expanding roles of the library (Delaney and Bates, 2018). These workshops have strengthened our belief that collaboration is one important strategy for librarians and writing tutors/researchers to acquire the skills of the future. In this article I take a closer look at the work of Mette Edvardsen and Morten Traavik. Their respective bodies of work have little in common in artistic terms, yet both have generated public debate. Rather than being based on informed, critical engagement with the work and practice of these artists, the debate has largely questioned the value of what they do and the public funding that supports it. I see this debate as a reminder of how art necessarily acts or works within contexts, and of the need for qualified insights into how it does so. Within the performing arts, scholars have been thinking about concepts of autonomy and heteronomy and how they might contribute to understanding different practices and experiences of contemporary performing art. These ideas inform this article, which examines the work and practice of Edvardsen and Traavik with an emphasis on aesthetic, dramaturgical and contextual perspectives. In this article I take a closer look at the work of Mette Edvardsen and Morten Traavik.

The article deals with the choice of Spanish forms of address on online web stores. It focuses on the choice between informal (tú/vos) and formal address (usted), studied empirically using a corpus created with Google searches.  In the context of an online web store, the aim is to build enough confidence in the potential buyer so that they end up buying the product offered even when the seller is not physically present and the customer does not have an opportunity to examine the product. Moreover, payment is done online, which often involves certain risks.  Both tuteo/voseo and ustedeo include elements aimed at building confidence in the potential customer, though from different perspectives. When the customer is addressed with tú/vos, the aim is to build confidence including a nuance of familiarity in the sales discourse. By contrast, ustedeo includes nuances of politeness and formality, and conveys the hidden message that since the online web store addresses the customer in a correct and respectful manner, the same good practices also extend to purchase situations.  The article presents results and conclusions related to the following research questions:  the general features of the use of forms of address on online web stores; the forms of address on the online web stores in the 21 Spanish-speaking countries of the world; the forms of address in Spanish texts on US online web stores, and pages on which the potential customer is addressed with usted

The irrational and the shift of human boundaries in contemporary novels by Castillon, Martinez and NDiaye

The infiltration of magical, marvellous and fantastic features in novels which have a realist anchoring is a remarkable trend in contemporary literature by women writers in French. In order to reveal the issues conveyed by such an imagery built on various literary traditions, I examine the representations of the irrational in recent novels by three authors: Eux (2014) and Les Pêchers (2015) by Claire Castillon, Du Domaine des murmures (2011) and La Terre qui penche (2015) by Carole Martinez and Ladivine (2013) by Marie NDiaye. I use the term “irrational” as a comprehensive notion referring to the fantastic and supernatural elements in the novels, including altered perceptions, paranormal and strange occurences, metamorphosis, staging of an alter ego, monstrosity and animality in human beings, life-after-death issues, emphasised relations to nature, and other phenomena and states that can not be explained by logic. Formulations of the irrational theme exploit a literary patrimony, related in particular to the traditions of medieval marvellous literature, the fairy tales, fantastic literature, surrealism and fantastic realism. I find that the irrational articulates a shift in human spatiotemporality towards vegetal states, animality or monstrosity, and initiates an altered approach to the world. A displaced sense of reality stemming from irrational phenomena and perceptions leads to a dislocation of human consciousness which is performed through the narrative voices. The framework for the analysis consists of a feminist and posthumanist conceptualisation which involves the notions of ‘performativity’ and ‘traces’ developed by Butler and Derrida

Generally, interviewers and interviewees address each other by the “traditional” deferential pronoun vous in French oral and written media, whereas in specialized magazines and television programs, tu often seems to be the usual address pronoun (cf. Williams & van Compernolle 2009; Coveney 2010).  However, Internet forums discussing the use of forms of address (consulted in 2015), point out the prevalence of very traditional opinions, contrasting with the above-mentioned observation. In general, less attention has been paid to nominal forms of address. This paper examines the use of pronominal and nominal forms of address in blogs on politics and in forums discussing current political events, that is in two types of Computer-Mediated Communication where the writers lack information about their interlocutor (age, social status, profession…). It shows to what extent their choice is dependent on the type of medium and on the context as well as on the relation between the interlocutors (conflictual, neutral…) and how nominal forms of address accentuate certain aspects of interpersonal relations. It also points out that the generalization of tu in special contexts does not reflect a drastic change in the use of forms of address in general. &nbsp

Queering Queer Spaces: Journey of a Creative Arts Program for Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Creative Youth

    No full text
As community spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals continue to expand and evolve, a variety of music and art-based programs have begun to develop. The potential for creative arts therapists to cultivate and expand these programs is without question. This article seeks to present one such program targeted towards transgender, nonbinary, gender creative, and questioning youth, age 10-14, who are seeking support in navigating their gender identity and the challenges of identifying outside of the “norm” of cisgender. Finding ourselves at a crossroads between traditional clinical mental health services and community-based approaches, we discuss the intentionality behind “queering” our program development as well as a spectrum of challenges and opportunities faced in piloting the program. We suggest that bringing creative arts therapy into queer spaces must be done through an anti-oppressive approach seeking to minimize power dynamics and increase safety. We must also create inclusive spaces that embrace intersectionality in order to provide safe, accessible, and empowering programs for LGBTQ+ individuals. Scaffolding Young People’s Journey from Mental Health Services into Everyday Social Music Making: A Pilot Music Therapy Project

    No full text
Many young people experience social isolation during times of mental illness which can impact lifelong health outcomes. Supporting recovery involves addressing the social dimensions of mental health and promoting capacity for community engagement. Music therapy groups offer people in mental health recovery opportunities to build social competencies in ways that align with recovery principles. However, no studies have explored the potential of such programmes in youth populations. A practice-based study was designed to explore how a pilot group music therapy project could support young people to bridge from mental health services into everyday community engagement. Young people participated in group music therapy sessions facilitated by a music therapist and music mentor. Mixed data was collected and analysed using inductive content and thematic methods. Findings show that young people primarily came to music therapy to work on social and musical competencies and the majority reported an improvement in their selected goal areas. Analytic themes illustrate young people’s experience of the group as a safe space that supported processes of coming together and constructing the social identity. Findings are discussed in relation to current mental health and music therapy practice. Recommendations for further service development are made and the concept of scaffolding is offered as a useful way of considering how support may be structured

The “Palliative Soul”: Music Therapy, End of Life Care, and Humanizing the Patient

Traduit par Danielle JakubiakThis qualitative research project features semi-structured interviews on perspectives of humanistic care with Spanish physicians and therapists who have worked in or are familiar with music therapy and end of life care, disciplines that identify themselves as centering humanistic values in patient care. The purpose of the study was to have the thirteen music therapists and physicians elaborate on their perceptions regarding humanistic patient care and synthesize common elements from their interviews. A grounded theory approach was used to construct and derive themes among interviewees, and a narrative method of analysis was used to highlight salient philosophies of care and moments of conversation with clinicians. Building off of the interviews, this article explores how artistic engagement in end-of-life contexts sets up avenues for spiritual, psychosocial, and medical care. This “palliative soul” approach to patient care illuminates how health professionals may humanize patients at the end of life: leaning in to experiences of suffering with intention and an open ear, approaching patients in anticipation of their potential spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial needs, defining suffering, wellbeing, and effective clinical intervention through the patient’s voice, thinking actively about their own biases and shortcomings in care, and overall seeing the beauty and humanity in people both within and despite their arrival at end-stage disease. Lastly, this article discusses how even outside the context of end of life care, health professionals may broadly adopt the “palliative soul” and incorporate the needs of patients and their relational networks into clinical practice
