Liberatory Music Therapy Model of Gender Affirming Voicework: Theoretical Foundations and Scope of Practice

    No full text
Since initial explorations of gender affirming voicework within the field of music therapy were first offered (Gumble, 2019a, 2019b, 2020), the authors have collaborated to further develop this work. From this collaboration, a specific set of ideas were collected to delineate a liberatory approach to working with gender and the voice within music therapy. These are presented as the Liberatory Music Therapy Model of Gender Affirming Voicework (LMT-GAV). The intention of this article is to integrate experiences the authors have had thus far and to (a) provide a definition, (b) summarize theories, methods, models, and concepts that are foundational to the model, and (c)delineate scope of practice

From student teacher to school teacher – mentor\u27s perspective

    No full text
In Norway, it is expected that newly qualified teachers (NQTs) receive mentoring during their first two years in the profession. This study, based on interviews with mentors for NQTs, shows that there are many tensions related to mentoring. However, it is by becoming aware of tensions that practices can change. Today\u27s five-year master\u27s degree-based teacher education provides NQTs with enhanced academic and research competencies compared to previous teacher education. This change creates both challenges and opportunities for mentoring NQTs. The study shows that the potential of master\u27s-level competencies is not always utilized. Mentoring is under pressure in a busy school environment and is not always prioritized by school leaders. The increased academic competence is often overshadowed by mentors\u27 focus on the newcomers\u27 lack of experience and ability to handle everyday challenges. Insight into tensions that mentors experience can simultaneously reveal opportunities to develop mentoring as a contribution to professional development.I Norge forutsettes det at alle nyutdannede lærere får veiledning de to første årene i yrket.

Photography as a tool for reflection in group mentoring

    No full text
The article examines students’ experiences with mentoring in groups of professionals in which photographs were used as a tool for reflection. The method is inspired by Lauvås et al. (2016). The participants are kindergarten teachers in further education. The research question is: How can mentoring when photography is used as a tool contribute to reflection? The study identifies several possibilities when using this method. Photographs provide a concrete and easily accessible starting point for reflection. The exercise contributed to reflection on multiple levels. Sharing pictures and listening to other people’s views created inspiration both to develop the physical environment in kindergartens, but also to allocate more time for mentoring in kindergartens. Findings also indicate several pitfalls when using photography as a basis for reflection.

Enacting shared narratives in work counselling: A narrative study of how work counsellors can support service users in the process of returning to work

Work counselling is complex and challenging. Research highlights the importance of user involvement and client-professional relationships for successful counselling outcomes. In this narrative case study, we explored how work counsellors may support service users in the process of returning to work, by focusing on meaning-making processes in counselling. We created data through a narrative interview and conducted a narrative analysis of the data. Our findings show how counsellors may support users through being open for multiple understandings of the situation, in particular users’ ongoing narratives. Further, our findings show how believing in, and acting on, users’ ongoing plots, may help in the process of returning to work. We discuss how our findings of counsellors’ role in meaning-making processes may shed light on how user involvement can be put into practice, but also how this may involve some dilemmas

"I’m Coming Out": The Role of Music in LGBTQ+ Identities

    No full text
Research shows that music holds great importance to the LGBTQ+ community. However, only a handful of studies have explored personal and private music consumption and particularly its role in individual identity formation and the coming out process – typically, with a focus on gay men and lesbians. This experiential qualitative study explored the role of music in LGBTQ+ identities before, during and after the coming out process. Data were collected from 30 participants who identified as LGBTQ+ and/or in the process of coming out using an online qualitative survey; four of these participants also took part in follow-up interviews. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, generating three themes: 1) Music to come out to; 2) Queer artists promoting individual authenticity, pride and empowerment; and 3) Queer music for community and belonging. The findings can inform the work of music therapists, music educators and community musicians working with LGBTQ+ individuals and communities. AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank all the participants for their contributions in this research and for taking the time to openly share their experiences.

Theatre has long served as a medium through which religious ideas are expressed, often by staging traditional myths and doctrines tied to institutional belief systems. This connection between theatre and religion has been well-documented in multiple scholarly discourses. More recently, scholars have also explored how certain performances evoke spiritual experiences through theatrical staging. However, contemporary research on aesthetic-religious experiences in performance tends to avoid the term «religious theatre» unless the work is explicitly connected to organized religion and communal belief. This article challenges that limitation by examining The Disorder of Desire (2022) and Einkvan (2024), two Norwegian performances that operate outside conventional religious frameworks. Drawing on a broader definition of religion as engagement with narrative worlds involving superhuman forces, and using the concept of immanent transcendence, the analysis explores how these works construct religious meaning and offer audiences experiences that may be understood as religious in nature. The aim is to propose a more inclusive understanding of «religious theatre»—one that reflects contemporary shifts in the study of religion and aesthetics

The article “Andean music and its relationship with the community, nature, and the cosmos” explores the deep connection between Andean music and the worldview of the peoples who inhabit the Andes mountain range. Using an ethnomusicological and therapeutic approach, it analyzes how Andean music transcends its aesthetic dimension to become a means of spiritual, communal, and healing communication. It highlights its links with natural cycles, agricultural rituals, and collective practices that strengthen identity and social cohesion. The text proposes integrating Andean sounds into contemporary music therapy, recognizing their potential to promote emotional regulation, community belonging, and identity re-signification. It also raises the need for interculturaland decolonial music therapy that values ancestral knowledge and avoids exoticizing or reductionist views. In this sense, Andean music is presented as a therapeutic and cultural resource of enormous relevance, capable of articulating the relationship between the human, the natural, and the cosmic. Editorial Comment The author, musician, and psychologist from the northern region of Potosí, who lives and works in La Paz, Bolivia, offers us a characterization of the music of the Andes region. Music is present in rituals, in communication with ancestors, in the cycles ofnature, and in its capacity for dialogue with other types of music. The notion of sonic identity allows Julio to explore the strong relationship between the Andean soundscape and the personal and cultural identity of those who participate in musical experiences in that context.
