Welcome
We are excited to welcome you to the 18th annual Kutztown 
University Composition Conference. 
Our theme this year is "Composing Care." After returning to our 
“New Normals,” this past year has challenged our sense of 
human empathy and care. Many of us are finding that we 
have to practice self- care, take on the burden of caring for 
others, or open ourselves up to caring about new and stressful 
situations. At the same time, many plans that we had put off 
now require our full emotional attention, whether or not we 
might be ready to give it.
One of our best tools for care is language. Expressing empathy 
can be as simple as an, “I’m sorry,” or as complex as listening 
to stories of grief, loss, and anger. Anyone who has ever felt at 
a loss for words during a moment of stress or tension 
understands that language is valuable, even essential, and 
our ability to use language gives us unique advantages in 
navigating the way we express care. Asking questions, offering 
narratives, and writing journals are all methods for connecting 
our words to our care at a deep, emotional level.
In the field of rhetoric and composition, the word “pathos” is 
often understood as an appeal to the emotion. As we all 
know, good writing involves a certain amount of care and 
connection with an audience, whether that be in swaying 
passions or expressing empathy. This conference invites us all 
to consider how we compose with care in all senses of that 
word:  caring for others, caring for our world, caring for 
ourselves, and even being “careful” in how we attend to the 
nuances that may seem small but that make all the 
difference.
Thank you for joining us to celebrate our students' insights and 
efforts. We hope that you enjoy the day.
