The Proctor Model of Clinical Supervision: An Introduction for Professional Counselors
Get PDFCounseling supervisors require an increasingly diverse set of tools, theories, and interventions to address the myriad concerns that arise in clinical supervision. The ability to support, provide feedback, and systematically address supervisee issues are critical to effective supervision. Deliberate practice remains a key indicator of clinical effectiveness, with supervision skills requiring the same attention and practice. As consumers of supervision or providers of supervision services, professional counselors require useful models of how to engage in supervision. The Proctor Model is an internationally recognized and implemented model of supervision that has great utility for professional counselors
Embedding Grief and Loss Training across CACREP-Core Areas in School Counseling Programs
Get PDFEach year, millions of school-aged children and teens experience grief and loss (Judi’s, 2023). This conceptual article describes the impact of grief and loss on school-aged children and the need to integrate grief and loss training into CACREP-accredited programs through the eight-core CACREP areas. Using Bronfenbrenner\u27s Ecological Systems Theory, the authors will highlight how counselor educators can infuse content to address grief and loss with preservice school counselors holistically across the various systems surrounding the student in each CACREP core area
A Reconsideration of Dispositional Assessment in Counselor Education
Get PDFCounselor dispositions have increasingly taken an important role in the selection and subsequent training of counseling students. Yet, counselor educators continue to lack inventories or rating scales that reliably measure dispositional constructs that have been connected to counselor effectiveness. Evaluating prospective and current counseling students based on unproven dispositional measures is inconsistent with counseling organizations’ codes of ethics and may subject counselor educators to legal liability. The purpose of this article is to review the current state of dispositional assessment in counselor education, describe recent research on therapist effects in the outcome literature, and offer suggestions for improving dispositional assessment

Exploring the Influence of Self-Control and Assimilation on Intimate Partner Violence: A Longitudinal Analysis
No full textPrior scholarly inquiry into victimization consistently highlighted the significance of low self-control as a predisposing factor for heightened vulnerability to victimization. While existing literature has extensively examined the influence of low self-control across diverse demographic samples, a notable gap exists in the body of research concerning the effect of low self-control on intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and the role of assimilation. This study utilizes two waves of Add Health data to examine the relationship between low self-control and IPV victimization as well as the influence of assimilation on this association. Findings from the logistic regressions reveal that low self-control significantly increased the risk of IPV victimization and the relationship is robust across all models. Assimilation did not moderate the relationship between the two variables, instead, it had an independent effect on IPV victimization. Individuals with higher levels of assimilation were more likely to experience IPV victimization. Policy implications are discussed
A Reflection on Contemporary Issues Regarding the Death Penalty
No full textThe general trend in the use and application of the death penalty is an increasing movement toward abolition. This is reflected in the repeal of state death penalty laws, state moratoriums, and the reduction in executions and death sentences. The nature of the death penalty debate has also changed in the past two decades. Radelet and Borg (2000) provided an exhaustive overview of the nature of the debate surrounding capital punishment. This comment updates and reflects on some of the crucial contemporary scholarship that has been done in the following six central areas: incapacitation, deterrence, caprice and racial bias, retribution, innocence and miscarriages of justice, and cost. The authors also consider emerging frames that are impacting the debate. The main conclusion is that current scholarship continues to have a significant impact on framing the debate as well as creating the potential for the eventual abolition of capital punishment in this country
