Bahamianness as an Exclusive Good: Attempting to Change the Constitution, 2002

    Get PDF
In 2014, Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie announced a constitutional referendum on gender equality. In 2002, his predecessor, Hubert Ingraham, had already put a similar referendum before the electorate. Back then, the proposed amendments failed. The Bahamas’ independence Constitution imagines citizenship as limited and exclusionary. The amendments currently proposed would indeed remove some levels of discrimination contained in the citizenship provisions, but others would be retained, and some new ones may even be added. However, the discussion of these amendments is dominated by a proxy debate appealing to populist emotions. This paper seeks to analyse the amendments proposed in 2002, which marked the first attempt at constitutional reform since Bahamian independence, as well as the process that ultimately led to defeat at the polls. The focus will be on the amendments addressing gender inequality. Questions include: how would the 2002 proposal have changed the levels of unequal access to citizenship compared to the 1973 Constitution, and how do they compare to the 2014 proposals? And, to what extent were there procedural flaws present in 2002, and to what extent did a distractionary discourse sabotage the declared goal of gender equality

Review of Tour de Force, the third album from C Force, an ensemble comprised of flutist Christine Gangelhoff, euphoniumist Christian Justilien, and pianist Christy Lee. With repertoire spanning over two centuries, the trio embarks on a musical tour to Guadaloupe, Jamaica, and Haiti on Disc One, and then Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Bahamas on Disc Two. Just as the eclectic album artwork by John Cox might suggest, Tour de Force provides listeners with a sense of the rich tapestry of musical connections shared in art music across the Caribbean. This two-disc set (released March 2016) was recorded at the Performing Arts Center of The College of The Bahamas and produced by Terry Manning of Lucky Seven Records

The Impact of College Graduates on Bahamian Society: With Emphasis on Graduates from The College of The Bahamas

    Get PDF
Society at large, both government and residents, invests in education, a process which is considered to reach its apex with a university qualification. Economically, education is typically seen to be both a private and public good, and so it is useful to determine the benefits to both the individual and society arising from this investment. This paper examines the economic contributions of university-educated Bahamians to society. Using information obtained from The College of The Bahamas and other official sources, the study demonstrates that having a populace with higher education has a beneficial impact upon the Bahamian economy

    Citizenship as a Fundamental Right

    Get PDF
This article looks at the way the Constitution of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in its chapter on citizenship combines elements of both ius solis as well as ius sanguinis but fails to apply either of these principles consistently. This can result in the de iure statelessness of children born to Bahamian parents overseas, and in the de iure and/or de facto statelessness of children born in The Bahamas to non-Bahamian parents. The article further analyses the proposals for amendments to the Constitution as presented by Prime Minister Perry Christie in 2014, demonstrating that some of these issues will be retained. It argues that the Constitution’s exclusionary approach to citizenship creates an incompatibility between the state’s expectation of loyalty of its citizens and the citizens’ ability to identify with the nation

Do Age and Education Matter? Organizational Demography as an Influential Factor on Perceptions of a Learning Organization in Law Enforcement

    Get PDF
Scholars and practitioners have identified many important factors that influence the development of a learning organization or employees’ perception of that organization as a learning organization. However, in The Bahamas, there have been few studies that have empirically examined whether employees' perceptions are influenced by their educational level or by their age. This study focused on the perceptions of law enforcement officers of their organization as a learning organization at individual, team and organizational levels. Additionally, the study examined whether the officers' perceptions are influenced by their educational level and age. A total of 290 participants were surveyed and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVAs. The results from the study revealed that the officers’ perceptions of the organization as promoting learning practices and cultures are neutral, revealing significant differences in their perceptions related to educational level
