Get PDFDue to their convenience in reproducing sampled sounds, computers are of potentially great benefit as tools for foreign language learning. Furthermore, when compared with CD-ROMs, online teaching materials are even more advantageous, as the Internet enables teachers and learners to communicate globally, overcoming spatial and time limitations. Amongst web materials, websites incorporating Flash are more effective than standard HTML websites because they allow users to manipulate texts, sounds and still and moving images. Chen Shui-bian's Political Style and Unstable Democracy in Taiwan
Get PDFThis paper argues for unstable democracy in Taiwan after a change of government in 2000. Taiwan has become a full-fledged democracy, but democracy has failed to reduce partisan confrontation and social divisions in Taiwan. This paper studies the problems in Taiwan's democracy, and tentatively argues that a key problem is political leader's, that is, President Chen Shui-bian's political strategy and style, which is characterized as populism. This paper further suggests that, struggling against the opposition parties and People's Republic of China, President Chen Shui-bian has unavoidably chosen ethnic-national issues in order to win political supports, which has stimulated ethnic cleavage and led to social divisions.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFIn the United States American constitutional law has pursued intertwined themes of congressional plenary power and the meaning of national membership for more than a century. The plenary power doctrines were initially propounded by the Supreme Court as the nation faced the overseas "other" at U.S. borders, and on Indian reservations. This article is aimed at finding the possibility of restricting such a plenary power over immigration cases, analyzing the famous Chinese exclusion case, Chae Chan Ping v. United States, 130 U.S. 581 (1889), which is said to be the origin of congressional plenary power. Here we discuss the domestic validity of the pertinent treaties, the state sovereign power, the yellow hordes theory of exclusion, and the genesis of the self-preservation theory in the U.S immigration laws.departmental bulletin pape
The mechanism of the conversion of the -ed form to Φ form as exemplified by "a pirated version" to "a pirate version"
Get PDFThis study sets out to discuss a mechanism of conversion of -ed forms into Φ forms focusing on the example of the change from pirated version to pirate version. Viewed from phonetic and semantic perspectives, specific triggers for changing from -ed forms into Φ forms are as follows : (i) the expressions of "-ed forms + noun" must be idiomatic phrases; (ii) the indispensable presence for noun forms of -ed forms; (iii) the speaker does not give a semantically false impression when "-ed forms + noun" are converted into "Φ forms + noun." Only when these three conditions are satisfied, speakers choose the shortest possible expressions on the condition that they do not mislead the addressees. I will explain this trait as the "principle of least effort, " which manifests itself as the principle of "linguistic economy, " as argued in Yagi・Inoue (to appear). An Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of Focus on Form : With an Analysis of Learners' L1 Transfer
Get PDFThe purpose of the present research is to demonstrate that L1 transfer in Japanese early learners' syntacticization process is essentially related to the development of writing skills. The research shows the following : First, transfer from Japanese in EFL learners' written English appears in nine different categories and takes on different patterns in each of four different groups of students, signifying the fact that all the categories shown below are almost identical with those previously found in Japanese university EFL students. Second, L1 transfer in the high proficiency groups is shifted from direct transfer to more diversified types, as the learners are challenged to construct more difficult, complex sentences. However, the transfer in the low proficiency groups is distinguished by its dominance of literal translation and anomalous use of copula, which continue to remain a trouble spot in the course of study. Third, the group that received form-focused training has statistically shown advancement in the area of syntax. The results also suggest that some of the factors found in this study can become the key to proficiency in writing.departmental bulletin pape
