Induced Boredom Suppresses the Recall of Positively Valenced Information: A Preliminary Study

The mood-congruence memory (MCM) effect in the case of depressed mood is typically evidenced by enhanced recall of negatively valenced information and/or a corresponding reduction in the recall of positive information. However, the impact of the related affect of boredom on memory has been overlooked. A sample of undergraduate and graduate students (n = 28) were asked to either read an interesting story (Low Boredom condition) or complete a tedious vowel-counting task (High Boredom condition) after studying a list of neutral, negative, and positive words. Following the experimental manipulation, the participants were asked to recall as many words from the list as they could remember. The participants in the low boredom (LB) group reported (i.e., recalled words + misremembered words) significantly more positive words than participants in the high boredom (HB) condition. However, no differences were found between groups in terms of the total number words reported, total number of positive, neutral or negative words recalled, or the overall accuracy of recall. Boredom appears to inhibit the reporting and recall of positively valenced information, but seems to have less influence on the recall and reporting of emotionally negative information than what is typically reported in studies with depressed mood. This finding is consistent with a conception of boredom as an affect state that is more closely tied to the perceived depletion of potential positive reinforcement (e.g., novelty, enjoyment, meaningfulness) than the depletion of negative reinforcement (e.g., escape from suffering, loss, failure). Larger implications of the findings are discussed

Draw squares, and you will discover that many competent and rigorous people are around you: Shape priming influences impressions regarding the interpersonal environment

The effects of drawing circles and squares on personality judgments in a metaphor-consistent manner, the round-warm and square-competent associations were investigated. We conducted a study in which participants drew as many circles or squares as possible and responded to a questionnaire assessing their interpersonal environment. Results showed that participants in the round condition responded that there were significantly more warm people around them than those in the square condition, and those in the square condition responded that there were significantly more competent and rigorous people around them than those in the round condition. These findings confirmed the metaphor-consistent effect of shapes on social perceptions

Bulgarian Approbation of the Family Satisfaction by Adjectives Scale (F.S.A.S.)

The main aim of the study is to present the Bulgarian adaptation of the Family Satisfaction by Adjectives Scale (by Barraca, Yarto, and Olea, 2000), as well as to find out whether some social- demographic factors would influence the family satisfaction experience. The family is an important social structure that influences society and that is influenced by society that results in the intimate inner world to every person. In this relation, the satisfaction leaves its traces in the people`s emotions which are difficult to be sized up partly because of the transience of the emotions. So, the Family Satisfaction by Adjectives Scale offers a good opportunity to encompass a large register of emotional experiences in a stable time frame. 287 people were investigated in a range of 21 to 60 years of age (M = 36.13, SD = 9.25) from them 191 women and 96 men. The approbation of the scale gave a very strong internal consistency coefficient Cronbach`s α = 0.978. The given through Eta squared index data showed that the social-demographic factors did not influence the family satisfaction and this supports the authors` statement that the satisfaction is a very personal and emotional experience.Language: Bulgaria

Work-Oriented Men and Women: Similar Levels of Work-Family Conflict and Guilt yet Different Coping Strategies

Balancing family and professional roles has become one of the challenges of the twenty-first century. This exploratory study aims to analyse the guilt, losses, aspirations and difficulties associated with work-family interaction and the career centrality of men and women, as well as their strategies to cope with work-family conflict. Using questionnaire and interview data of 73 Portuguese participants (41 men and 32 women), we showed that the women experienced the most guilt and loss and greater difficulties in balancing family and professional life. Yet contrary to the literature, the women in this sample assigned great importance to their career (even higher than men), but they felt that their potential for success at work was constrained due to the family demands. Prioritizing family over work gives work-centered women a sense of sacrifice, loss and guilt

Aristotle’s Concept of Mental Imagery in Sports

Throughout the past decade, there has been an accelerated expansion of heightening consciousness in athletic performance’s mental facets, which is reflected in the aggrandizement of research concern in cognitive sports psychology. Research on mental imagery has been considerably influenced by cognitive concepts whereby Aristotle, the Stageirite philosopher, delivers the primary systematic account of the significant role of mental imagery in cognition. In Aristotelian psychological theory, mental images perform much the same function that the rather broader concept of mental portrayal plays in contemporary cognitive science. With the assumption that cognition refers to any mental activity associated with acquiring, storing or using knowledge (including competent behaviour), the present paper, endeavors to forge an alliance between Aristotle’s notion of mental imagery, which draws attentions to some form of fundamental mental portrayal of athletic Knowledge, along with the contemporary notion of mental imagery in sports performers

Mindfulness: Age and Gender Differences on a Bosnian Sample

The goal of this research was to examine age and gender differences in mindfulness on Bosnian general population. The study was conducted on a sample of 441 participants from the general population, from twelve cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a measure of mindfulness we used Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire. Results showed that older participants’ scores were higher than for younger participants for all aspects of mindfulness. There was found a statistically significant difference between the three age groups on the subscales of Acting with awareness F(2, 435) = 7.39, p .01 and of Non-judging of inner experience F(2, 428) = 5.67, p .01. We found statistically significant difference for the Acting with awareness between 20-32 age group (M = 28.57, SD = 5.66) and 33-49 age group (M = 31.01, SD = 5.00, t(292) = -3.91, p .001), and between 20-32 age group and 50+ group (M = 30.14, SD = 5,86, t(290) = -2.32, p .05). Also, there was a significant difference for the Non-judging between 20-32 age group (M = 24.77, SD = 5.80) and 33-49 age group (M = 26.65, SD = 5.09, t(288) = -2.94, p .01), and between 20-32 age group and 50+ group (M = 26.49, SD = 4.90, t(287) = -2,71, p .05). According to the t-test results, there was statistically significant gender difference between the subscales Observing (t(432) = -2.259, p .05) and Acting with awareness (t(432) = 2.197, p .05), women scored higher than men on the subscale Observing, while men exhibited higher scores on the subscale Acting with awareness. Results of this research showed that there were found significant age and gender differences for some aspects of mindfulness in the sample of Bosnian general population
