Home Economics is a subject centering around the study of all problems of 
the modern home and family. It places emphasis upon those factors which con­

eastern section of the country by delegat es. Seniors attend the Maine Home Eco­
nomics Association meetings, Maine State Teachers Convention and on occasion 
the Club sends delegates to the American Home Economics Association meetings. 
STUDENT TEACHING 
During the senior year opportunities are provided for students to do their 
student teaching in selected schools of the state under the supervision of tra ined 
supervisory teachers. For six weeks each senior observes , assists and teaches in one 
of the chosen high schools . She shares in the various social expcri ·nces provid ed 
by the school and enters into many community activities. The junior ed ucat ion 
cour ses, with directed observation in the Farmington public schools, prep11re the 
student teacher for the major experience of senior year field te:iching. 
STUDENT SELF HELP 
SLUdents who find it neces ary to have financial assistance may apply for part 
time wo rk. Requests for opportunity to work should be made in the letter of 
application. No student should consider working unless it is necessary as health 
and schoo l work are likely to suffer. Work is not given to a stu lent unl ess she is in 
good health and is capable of maintaining a satisfactory school rank . Freshmen 
should not plan to work during their first semester, juniors during th eir second 
semester, and seniors are unable to work for remuneration during the part of their 
senior year when they are living in the H o me Economics Cotrnge or doing student 
teaching. 
A limited number of students may obtain deferred tuition for a part of the 
course. A few student loans are available each year, especially to upperclassmen . 
GUIDANCE AND PLACEMENT 
Student guidance is stressed with emphasis on ori entation of the freshmen. 
Through the four year s the student will have the benefit of counselling service on 
matters of study, finan ce and social adjustment. 
At the completion of the course, or after they are already in the field , graduates 
will find the College Pia ·ement Bureau and the placement service offer d by the 
State Department of Ed11ca1ion ready to assist them to find satisfact ory teaching 
positions.

ADMISSIONS 
Enrollment in the enterin g class of the Hom e Economics Course is limited 
and selection will be based on: 
1. High school record as showing probable ability to maintain college stand­
ards in all areas. 
2. Standing in upper half of graduating class or satisfactory rating in prescribed 
entrance t'.Xaminations. 
3. Such clements of personality and health as give promi se of success as a 
teacher of homemaking. 
4. Evidence of special aptitude and interest in this type of work. 
5. Interest in teaching and intent to complete the course. 
Students desiring to be considered as applicants for the department should: 
1. Write a letter of application including particular interests and reasons for 
choosing home economics; experiences in high school activities, clubs, hobbies or 
other interests, church affiliation and activities and practical experiences in the 
home. Thi s should be sent to Miss Mabel A. Hastie , Director of Horne Economics, 
with the student's application blank from the last page of this pamphlet.

time to be arranged.

A study of the principles of color and design. Laboratory 
experience is provided for using line, balance, rhythm, emphasis, 
proportion and color in simple problems as lettering, sketching, 
designing, posters, bulletin boards and room arrangement. 
ART APPRECIATION - Elective 2 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
The course provides a comprehensive survey of fine arts and 
crafts from ancient times to the present clay. Some study is given 
to creative art as such and to the schools of painting. Traditional 
influence of the past on art forms as well as those which affect 
contemporary painting, architecture, and industrial arts is noted.

Music APPllECIATION 1 Sem. hour credit- Freshman year - Elective 
To increase the enjoyment of music through better under­
standing is the theme of this comse. A survey of the types of 
voices, instruments, orchestras, and the leading artists in each of 
these fields comprises the material included in the first quarter's 
work. A brief history of music followed by a study of the outstand­
ing exponents of each period, coupled with the study of the music 
of the common people is discussed.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT 2 Sem. hours credit - Freshman year I 
Introductory course for Freshman students. Development of 
personality in the early years. Emphasis on care and guidance of 
children. Reading and observations in nursery school. 
CHILD DEVELOPMENT 3 Sem. hours credit year1.-2 - Junior 
A study of the biological development of the individual, the 
bodily needs of mother and child as well as the psychological needs 
of each. This course includes three semester hours of credit in a 
unit in Child Psychology dealing with a smdy of the child's motor 
and language development, his mental growth and personality de­
velopment together with his reactiorw to play life and his social 
environment. Practical work with children is given students through 
participation in the activitives of a play school for nine weeks and 
through home observation and participation.

PRELIMINARY ENGLISH TEST Freshman year 
Near the beginning of the year, a diagnostic test in English 
grammar and usage is given to all freshmen. Students who fail to 
attain the required standard in this test are required to take a non­
credit remedial course, one hour a week. 
ENGLISH 1 - WRITTEN COMPOSITION 
3 Sem. hours credit - Freshman year 
Designed to give practice in producing various types of lit~ 
erary expression, observing the fundamentals of good English use­
age. Units include exposition, description, narration, argumenta­
tion , and letter writing. Clarity of thought and correctness of 
technique are stressed. 
ENGLISH 2 - ORAL COMPOSITION

Development of clear and correct diction, bodily poise, ease

ENGLISH 6 - CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

A general survey of children's literature with special attention 
to the material suitable for nu rsery school and kindergarten. Prac­
tice in story telling is empha sized and a wide acquaintance with 
children's books, both old and new, is sought. 
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE - Elective 
2 Sem. hours credit - Junior year 
Background information of the writers who have contributed 
to the development of modern American fiction. An acquaintance 
with the lives and representative works of outstanding contem­
porary British and American writers of prose, poetry, and drama. 
Recognition of the many types of writing and of the problems and 
techniques involved in each type. The establishing of criteria for 
judging effectively the literary merit of a work. Extensive reading 
is required. 
PLAY PRODUCTION - Elective 1 Sem. hour credit • Junior year 
A practical course designed primarily for prospective coaches 
of dramatics. Units include history of the drama, elementary act­
ing, stage craft, make-up, the organization and management of a 
dramatics club, and the production of a one-act play. 
JOURNALISM - Elective 2 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
This course aims to instruct the student in forms of news 
writing, newspaper make-up, and principles of good journalism, 
thereby qualifying him to more adequately interpret the school to 
the public as a director of scho ·il publicity, and to serve as an 
adviser of student publications. 
HOME ECONOMICS 
CLOTHING 1 - GROOMING 1 Sem. hour credit - Freshman year 
A course emphasizing the importance of good grooming and 
good taste in dress. It includes a study of care and arrangement 
of hair; care of the skin; a study of color and of other factors in 
relation to the selection of clothing for the individual for -various 
occasions. 
CLOTHING 2 4 Sem. hours credit : Freshman year 
A study of problems of grooming, selection and buymanship 
of clothing for the college girl; elemenlary textiles, and construc­
tion of simple garments. Emphasis is placed on design, color and 
suitability of clothes to individual and occasions. 
CLOTHING 3 4 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
✓ An advanced study of clothing selection, figure problems, 
clothing budgets, textiles and construction. A comparative study 
of ready-made clothing and assembling of illustrative material for 
use in teaching are included in this course. 
CLOTHING 5 3 Sem. hours credit - Junior year 
A study of pattern alteration and of simple drafting problems; 
selectioR and construction of children's clothing; special prob­
lems of construction meeting individual needs for advanced ex­
periences; review of textiles and construction techniques; dyeing 
and make-over problems are included in the course. A coat or a 
suit is made. Illustrative materials are studied and prepared for 
use in teaching. 
CONSUMER EDUCATION 
One and one half Sem. hours credit - Junior year 
One and one half Sem. houn credit - Senior year 
A study of the need for consumer education, the role of the 
consumer in economic life and the development of the consumer 
movement. Studies arc made of consumer goods. 
Junior year - A study of the market and food problems. 
Senior year - A study of household furnishings and equipment. 
CRAITS 2 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
Inexpensive decorative accessories for home and personal use 
are made. Block printing, stenciling, crayonex, embroidery stitches, 
crocheting and knitting are taught with emphasis on good design and 
color and such articles as can be taught in high school courses. 
FINANCE .. 2 Sem. hours credit - Senior year 
Course deals with the study of standards of living; source of 
family income; family and personal budgets; savings and invest­
ments; use of credit-; insurance and simple accounting. Planning 
and management of the income for better family living are stressed. 
Fooos 1 4 Stm. hours credit - Freshman year 
An introduction to the study of foods from the standpoints 
of selection, planning, buying, preparing, and serving of meals, 
with emphasis on the principles of cooking. It also includes the 
essentials in housekeeping duties. 
Fooos 4 3 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
A continuation of freshman foods with deeper emphasis on 
all phases . of marketing, planning, preparation, and serving of 
meals for family size groups. 
FooDs 5 - NUTRI _TION 4 Sem. hours credit - Junior y,ar 
The application of the principles of chemistry and other sci­
ences to the problems of human nutrition and good health. 
Special emphasis is given to child nutrition and to methods of 
presenting nutrition in the classroom. A unit on food preservation 
precedes the nutrition study. 
Fooos 6 3 Sem. hours c, edit - Junior year 
The course is made up of units in food preparation, consist­
ing of experience in the giving of teas, buffet suppers, out of door 
suppers, formal dinners, and banquets; a review of fundamental 
principles of cookery through demonstration method; quantity 
cookery, theory and practice in the dormitory and at the school 
lunch in the high school. · 
HOME ECONOMICS 1 AND 2 - PERSONAL LIVING PROBLEMS 
2 Sem. hours credit - F1·eshman year 
A study is made of the problems faced by students making 
adjustments in a school environment. Budgeting of money and 
time, study aids, selection of extra-curricula activities, social prac­
tices and etiquette, friendships, religion in relation to successful 
living and desirable personality essentials are evaluated. 
HOME HYGIENE AND CARE OF THE SICK AND FrnsT Arn 
2 Sem. hours credit - Senior year 
The home hygiene unit includes both theoretical and labora­
tory work in problems of care of the sick, aged and convalescent 
in the home, including common emergency treatments. The first 
aid unit is a practical course which gives a working knowledge 
of what to do in any emergency before the doctor arrives. The 
work of both units is given under the auspices of the American 
Red Cross which confers certificates upon students successfully 
completing the courses. 
HOME RESIDENCE AND INFANT CARE 
4 Sem. hr,U1 s <1 t dit - Senior year 
A course offering an opportunity for small groups of seniors, 
a baby, and a Director to experience family living in the home. 
Responsibilities are assumed for the meal planning, buying and 
preparation of food, housekeeping, laundering, care of baby, en­
tertaining guests and family fun. A study is made of the baby from 
birth through the first year, stressing physical an.d mental develop­
ment. The study is supplemented with observation through watch­
ing, living with and caring for the baby in the home. 
THE HOUSE - PLANNING AND FURNISHING 
3 Sem. hours credit - Junior year 
A study of houses in relation to family needs. Selecting and 
planning an efficient, attractive, and convenient house; study of 
building materials; furnishings for the house on a moderate income; 
selection and arrangement of furniture; floor coverings and textiles 
for the home are units studied. 
HOUSEHOLD PHYSICS AND EQUIPMENT 
3 Sem. hours c1edit - Sophomore year 
An introductory course in household physics in which mech­
anics, heat, electricity, and light are considered. F1actical appli­
cation is made of the principles of physics to the equipment found · 
in the household. Operation and care of the various types of 
equipment, and standards by which each should be chosen, are 
emphasized. 
HOUSING One and one half Sem. hours credit •· Junior year 
A course dealing with the various aspects of housing includ­
ing housing in relationship to family needs, heaRh, safety, and 
citizenship; legal procedures and transactions connected with 
building and housing. 
RooM IMPROVEMENT 1 Sem. hour credit - Senior year 
Emphasis is placed on making a house attractive with a min­
imum expencliture of money. R~novation, refinishing, and uphol­
stering of furniture aI?,d the making of room accessories are exper­
iences provided.

This course includes the general principles of biology, sys­
tematic survey of plant and animal phyla, Mendelian laws and 
their implications, anatomy, physiology, and hygiene.

Introduction to and study of inorganic chemistry. Energy -
matter - elements - compounds - atomic theory •· valence - equa­
tions - nomenclature - oxidation - reduction - ionization - and sol­
utions are topics included as well as uses of inorganic salts in the 
body. 
CHEMISTRY II 5 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
A classroom and laboratory study of such topics as hydrocar­
bon - alcohols - ethers - esters - aldehydes - ketones - organic 
acids - cyclic compouds - carbohydrates - fats - proteins - vita­
mins - digestion and digestive enzymes - blood and lymph - meta­
bolism - endocrine glands and hormones - urine and feces. 
MICROBIOLOGY AND COMMUNITY HYGIENE 
3 Sem. hours credit - Sophomore year 
An intro duc tory course including the study of bacterial types 
as to general harac teristics and physiology in relation to human 
welfare. The "Community Hygiene" aspect of the course will in­
clude such topics as water contamination, examination and pur­
ification, air contamination and examination, milk, its contamina­
tion and examination, and the contamination and examination of 
food.

to date with the news, by means of newspapers, magazines and

ECONOMICS Two and one half Sem. hours credit • Junior year 
The subject covers the fundamental economic principles and 
the problems of modern economic society; production; the modern 
exchange system; value and price, and public finance. Particular 
attention is paid to the application of economic principles to cur­
rent problems, such as labor relations and government regulation 
of business. Present economic policies of leading nations are 
studied and compared.

A sociological treatment of the family, dealing with its origin, 
structure and functions, including reliable data which should 
prove of practical help to young people seeking guidance in the 
choice of a marriage partner and in the necessary adjustments of

secondary schools.

GENERAL STATEMENT 
Farmington Normal School is best known through the work of its 
regular course covering a period of seventy years, but for 23 years it 
has been offering training in the Household Arts. 
In 1911 a one year and a two year Domestic Science course were 
offered-the one year course being offered to graduates of the regular 
course. 
In 1924 a four year course was introduced and all shorter courses 
withdrawn. Through an act of the Legislature of 1928 the privilege of 
granting appropriate degrees to graduates of four year Normal School 
courses was given to the Normal School trustees of the State of Maine. 
Students graduating from the Home Economics Department in June 
1928 were the first to receive the degree of Bachelor of Science in Home 
Economics. 
Graduates of the two year course, desiring further preparation may 
receive credit for work previously completed. Every effort will be made 
to arrange programs which will meet indiv,idual needs. 
NATURE OF HOME ECONOMICS 
Home Economics is a subject centering around the study of all 
problems of the modern home and the family. It no longer deals with 
cooking, sewing and cleaning as the major problems of the home but 
places greater emphasis upon those factors which contribute to happy 
family life and worth while community participation. The course in­
cludes a study of the mental and physical health of the family as in­
fluenced by food, clothing, shelter, •intelligent child training, psychology, 
recreation, scientific home management and social and economic 
problems. 
The curriculum aims to provide for the future Home Economics 
teacher a well rounded prog-ram including such technical and related 
subjects and such cultural and social studies as are needed by the 
teacher for her profession and for the highest type of citizenship. One 
hundred twenty-four credits are required for graduation. No provision 
is made for electives, except for teachers of experience, as -it is believed 
that the entire program constitutes minimum essentials for the young 
Home Economics teacher. 
The home provides the most valuable practice field for gaining 
exper,ience in the various phases of Home Management and for mas­
tering the techniques of cookery and sewing. 
During the course an effort is made to help each student to de­
termine her need for various types of practical experience. Such ex­
perience may be gained through a series of home projects. Experience 
is later provided in the Practice House during the Senior year. 
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 
Candidates for admission to the Home Economics Course will be 
selected from graduates of Class A high schools. Selection will be 
based on: 
1. Entrance admission age-17 years. 
2. High school record as showing probable abHity to master the 
academic subjects. · 
3. Such elements of personality as give promise of success in 
teaching·. 
4. Some evidence of special aptitude and taste for th~s type of 
work.

Personal interviews at the school are · urged in advance of registra­
tion. 
A regist.ration fee of seven dollars is requil'ed of every applicant 
accepted. This fee will be credited to th e student as payment of her 
laboratory fee for the first semester. No refu nd of this fee will be made 
in case of cancellation of res ervation after August first. 
UNIFORMS 
Outfits requ ired for Foods and Ch emistry classes may be pur chased 
at cost aftet arrival at the school. Pl ain black oxfords with low, rubber 
he els, an d black sto ckings are requir ed for use in the Foods cla sses. 
Gymnasium outfits should be ordered by each student before school 
opens. Order blan ks, giving full h1fonn ation , will be mailed to each 
st udent afte r she has been acce pted for admission to the school. Any 
part of a hi gh scho ol uniform, similar to that required , may be used.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT 
Students who find it necessary to have financial assistance may 
apply for part time work . Requests for opportunity to work should be

Work is no t given to a. student unless she Is in good physical concl!tlon

the lar g number of students needing self help no student should expect 
to hnve more than half time work for two of th e four years. Fresh­
men should not plan to work their first semester a.nd seniors are un­
able to work for remuneration during the half of their senior year while 
living in the Practic e Home. 
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS 
The schoo l has dormitory accommoda.Lions for all of its stude nts. 
Room assignments In dormitories are made in the Ol'der cf applications. 
A Student House for Juniors and Seniors fm•nishes additional op­
portunities for self government for maturer students. The cost of board 
an d room is increased to $5.75 per week during the Junior and Senior 
years. 
A regist ered .school nurne, living in one of the dormitories, devot es 
her time to the promotion of the he alth of the students.

half of the year. Here each student has an opportunity to apply what

cluding a baby. Major emphasis is placed upon the need for efficient 
planning of work, the value of co-operation and the •impol"tance of

Training are offered during 
the second semester of the 
Junior Year. A play school 
for children between the ages 
of two and five years is con­
ducted for ten weeks, in con­
nection with these courses. 
Here students have an excel­
lent opportunity to observe 
and participate in the care 
of pre-school children. 
STUDENT ACTIVITIES 
The development of a well rounded individual n ecessitates the 
cultivation of a breadth of interest in worth while things. Students 
are encouraged to participate in the activities of the various clubs and 
org·anizations of the school. 
SCHOOL GOVERNMENT 
The government of the school is a cooperative effort of faculty and 
student to maintain a type of training· for good citizenship. Faculty 
members and students- serve together on eight committees which create 
and put into effect the various policies of administrative government. 
Every student and every teacher is a committee member. Autocratic 
school government is abandoned and the students are taught and 
trained to assume responsibility for their personal conduct and for the 
conduct of the entire group. 
HOME ECONOMICS CLUB 
All students of the Department participate -in the activities of this 
club which has 100% membership of Home Economics students. 
Through its monthly meetings educational programs and g·ood times 
are provided. The students undertake many worth while enterprises

HOME ECONOMICS BASKET 
BALL TEAM 
THE ATHLETIC 
ASSOCIATION 
This Association aims to pro­
vide various forms of wholesome 
recreation for every student. 
The majority of the students of 
the Home Economics Depart­
ment are members of the Asso­
ciation and take an active pare 
in the following activities: Hik­
ing·, Tennis, Hockey, Captain 
Ball, Winter Sports, Basketball, 
Volley Ball. Deck Tennis and 
Newcomb. Usually two students 
from this department are chosen 
to serve on the Athletic Council 
and to serve as members of 
cheering squads. 
Students of the Department 
are eligible to membership in the 
following organizations of the 
school: Modern Authors Club, 
Dramatics Club, Debating and 
Public Speaking· Club, Choral 
Society and Orchestra.
