An Attendance Intervention: Using Technology to Involve Teachers and Parents
No full textAn attendance intervention was performed at a school district in Maine, which also tested the effectiveness of using technology for implementation. Computer technologies track student attendance rates, and efficiently communicate issues to stakeholders with minimal administrative overhead. All students at the Oxford Hills School District received the intervention during the FY2013 school year and attendance rates were compared against prior years. Results were somewhat inconclusive, but suggest that attendance gains might be achieved with further refinement of the intervention

Many students are graduating high school without the math skills necessary to enter into college level, credit-bearing courses, and this has become a national dilemma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate college readiness in mathematics. The participants in this study consisted of 162 students from three years (2010 – 2012) of Mountain Valley High School graduates. Participants were contacted individually via Facebook, a social media network, and provided a link to an online survey, which they were asked to complete voluntarily
Intentional Family Engagement in Early Childhood Programs
No full textCurrent research in early childhood education has shown that not only does family engagement benefit students and teachers in their daily interactions, but it also sets a lifelong pattern of engagement in a child’s classroom and school. This article presents findings from a qualitative study of how early childhood teachers intentionally encourage family engagement at their centers. These teachers’ responses reveal that although early childhood programs are using a variety of ways to encourage family engagement, there appears to be a lack of clear and consistent written expectations on the topic for both teachers and enrolled families at each center
Testing the Longevity of Pedometer Interest in Physical Education for Second Grade
No full textThe purpose of this study was to determine the length of time that a pedometer will motivate a second grader to be more active. Data were collected and analyzed using the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time (SOFIT) which is based on the activity levels of the students. The results show that pedometers had no impact on a second graders activity level

From traditional studies of theatrical history and adaptation to explorations of Shakespeare\u27s plays in the circus, musical extravaganzas, the cinema, and drama at large, the collection embraces a number of performance spaces, times, and media. Shakespeare in Performance includes essays looking not only at sixteenth- and seventeenth-century stagings of the plays in England, but at productions of Shakespeare across time in the United States, France, Italy, Hungary, and Africa, underscoring the multiple embodiments and voices of Shakespeare\u27s art and including a variety of cultural approaches. No full textStudents that participated in small group instruction that utilized clear and focused instructional strategies outperformed the students that did not have access to focused, small group instruction (Kamps, et.al, 2008). This current quantitative study supports small group and focused instruction to improve student growth in the area of letter naming fluency and letter sound fluency for students performing below average in these areas. Results indicated that all students included in this study increased their performance on both letter naming fluency and letter sound fluency. Educators should implement consistent, small group instruction that is focused on a specific skill to improve student growth in letter naming and letter sound fluency
What is the Impact of Daily Math Homework on Students in First Grade?
No full textThis study examined the impact that daily math homework has on first grade students. Teachers, parents and students in this small, rural northeastern school district participated in surveys and interviews to share their opinions and experiences related to homework. Teachers were surveyed and asked questions about their beliefs and practices regarding homework. Results indicated that teachers only support homework if it is a review, or practice of previously taught skills (Cooper, 2001). Teachers also indicated that they do not have a homework policy guiding a homework expectation (Aloia, 2003). Parents were asked questions about homework from a family’s perspective. Results showed overwhelming support for homework at the first grade level. More than half of the students interviewed expressed enthusiasm for doing schoolwork at home
