The Sitting with Jane Art Trail: Celebrating Jane Austen, Basingstoke, and Literary Tourism
No full textTo mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, the non-profit company Destination Basingstoke commissioned artists to design Austen-themed, book-shaped benches that would be placed in and around Basingstoke, England, during the summer of 2017 and sold at auction in September to raise money for charity. Over twenty artists, many of them local to the area, contributed to designing and painting twenty-four book benches, and companies in the Basingstoke and Deane Borough sponsored twenty-two of the benches. The public art trail, appropriately named Sitting with Jane, was a part of the Hampshire Culture Trust’s “Jane Austen 200—A Life in Hampshire,” a year-long series filled with exhibitions, walks, talks, and performances devoted to honoring the writer

Using Technology to Build Math Fact Fluency for Learning Disabled Students and Their Non-Disabled Peers.
No full textSignificant numbers of students enter sixth grade without basic math fact fluency. Using quantitative methods, this research examined the math fact fluency of learning disabled students and their non-disabled peers using a program known as Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology (FASTT Math). Participants in this research were sixth grade students. This classroom community consisted of 40 students and 8 of those students had an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for math. Data was collected and analyzed on weekly basis with students who used the FASTT Math program 3 times per week

Play and Social-Emotional Behaviors
No full textThe purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the relationship of children’s behaviors during free play and teacher-directed play. Play is an important aspect of children’s development and is decreasing in today’s early childhood programs (Ashiab, 2007). Observations and a social-emotional behavior checklist were used to determine the types of behaviors visible during play in two kindergarten classrooms from an Upper New England elementary school. Twenty students were observed during free play and teacher-directed play. Observations were then coded based upon the types of play and what behaviors occurred during each type of play. Results for this study show that free play choices were of child interest, while teacher-directed play were academic based. Free play resulted in less aggressive behaviors due to children being more engaged in choices that were of interest to them. Further research is necessary to better understand behaviors that occur in various play situations

Fedco, founded in 1978, is a worker-consumer cooperative in Maine known for promoting the ideals of cooperation, transparency, and the common ownership of seeds. These archives contain thousands of pages of Fedco’s seed catalogs. As one of its editors noted, “We give our readers things to think about.” Annual themes have included the role played by soil bacteria—the microscopic heroes that make life on this planet possible; the contributions of plant breeders and seed keepers; poetry by Walt Whitman, Vergil, and Russell Libby, among others. Editorials often stress the negative impact multinational corporations have on the genetic diversity of food crops, and provide annual updates on genetic engineering and the consolidation of the seed industry. Bits of humor are throughout, some of them in possibly the catalogs’ best feature: original art, and engravings from old seed catalogs and horticultural books. It is, in the words of Fedco’s founder CR Lawn, “More than a marketing tool.

Fire severity and regeneration strategy influence shrub patch size and structure following disturbance
Get PDFClimate change is increasing the frequency and extent of high-severity disturbance, with potential to alter vegetation community composition and structure in environments sensitive to tipping points between alternative states. Shrub species display a range of characteristics that promote resistance and resilience to disturbance, and which yield differential post-disturbance outcomes. We investigated differences in shrub patch size and stem density in response to variations in fire severity, vegetation community, and post-disturbance reproductive strategies in Sky Island forested ecosystems in the southwestern United States. Patterns in shrub structure reflect the effects of fire severity as well as differences among species with alternate post-fire reproductive strategies. Increased fire severity correlates with larger patch sizes and greater stem densities; these patterns are observed across multiple fire events, indicating that disturbance legacies can persist for decades. High severity fire produces the largest shrub patches, and variance in shrub patch size increases with severity. High severity fire is likely to promote expansion of shrub species on the landscape, with implications for future community structure. Resprouting species have the greatest variability in patch structure, while seeding species show a strong response to disturbance: resprouting species dominate at low disturbance severities, and obligate seeders dominate high severity areas. Differential post-fire reproductive strategies are likely to generate distinct patterns of vegetation distribution following disturbance, with implications for community composition at various scales. Shrub species demonstrate flexible responses to wildfire disturbance severity that are reflected in shrub patch dynamics at small and intermediate scales
