Accessing the Extreme: Adaptive Opportunities for High Adventure Programs

    Get PDF
High adventure recreation for those with a disability might seem to be a wild idea, one that does not fit with the mental image of outdoor recreation. However, it does not have to be such an unusual concept. It is worth investigating how high adventure programs could be made adaptable to the needs of those with a disability. In taking a slightly different approach to a thesis by looking at a gap in a business sector and proposing suggestions for an existing or new organization to take and apply – there can be an expansion of the market offerings to close the gap

The Effects of Brain Gym Exercises on Letter Identification

    No full text
Children’s school readiness is being impacted by social transformations and the decline of physical activity (Strasberger, 2011). Several qualitativestudies support the positive effects of physical and Brain Gym (BG) exercises on cognitive functioning (Watson & Kelso, 2014) and potentially schoolreadiness. This quantitative study examined whether the outcomes of Pre-Kindergarteners who practice BG exercises before a letter identification assessmentdiffer from those of Pre-Kindergarteners who do not. The Treatment group had the biggest increase in the number of lowercase letters identified. Changes inthe number of uppercase letters identified varied by children’s school readiness. These results suggest that for some Pre-Kindergartners, their ability toidentify letters may be enhanced by performing BG exercises before a letter identification assessment

Full Day Play vs. Part Day Play

    Get PDF
Early education is an essential part of development (Jalongo, Fennimore, Pattnaik, Laverick, Brewster, & Mutuku, 2004), however, there is much debate about what type of program will best meet the needs of young children. Programs have great variation with children attending as little as 12 hours a week to children attending 40 to 50 hours a week. A qualitative research design was used to analyze playful learning within a high quality early education center examining possible differences between a full day program and a part day program. The focus of this study was on the amount of time children spend playing at a center, and how long they are using materials as the curriculum used intends. Results suggest that young children can become fully engaged in their learning when presented with intentional activities and interesting materials, regardless of how many hours they spend in a classroom

Can\u27t Stand Still : Taylor Gordon and the Harlem Renaissance

    No full text
Born in 1893 into the only African American family in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Emmanuel Taylor Gordon (1893–1971) became an internationally famous singer in the 1920s at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. With his musical partner, J. Rosamond Johnson, Gordon was a crucially important figure in popularizing African American spirituals as an art form, giving many listeners their first experience of black spirituals. Despite his fame, Taylor Gordon has been all but forgotten, until now. Michael K. Johnson illuminates Gordon’s personal history and his cultural importance to the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, arguing that during the height of his celebrity, Gordon was one of the most significant African American male vocalists of his era. Gordon’s story—working in the White Sulphur Springs brothels as an errand boy, traveling the country in John Ringling’s private railway car, performing on vaudeville stages from New York to Vancouver to Los Angeles, performing for royalty in England, becoming a celebrated author with a best-selling 1929 autobiography, and his long bout of mental illness—adds depth to the history of the Harlem Renaissance and makes him one of the most fascinating figures of the twentieth century. Through detailed documentation of Gordon’s career—newspaper articles, reviews, letters, and other archival material—the author demonstrates the scope of Gordon’s cultural impact. The result is a detailed account of Taylor’s musical education, his career as a vaudeville performer, the remarkable performance history of Johnson and Gordon, his status as an in-demand celebrity singer and author, his time as a radio star, and, finally, his descent into madness. Can’t Stand Still brings Taylor Gordon back to the center of the stage.https://scholarworks.umf.maine.edu/publications/1034/thumbnail.jp
