    Developing a Creativity Curriculum Intensive for Small Business-Owners

    This project involved both the development and implementation of the Dare to Create Launchpad creativity curriculum intensive for an intimate group of small business-owners. The purpose of this project was to receive feedback from participants to determine if it would be a successful and viable way to engage small business-owners in the Creative Problem-Solving process. In addition, this curriculum aimed to provide a platform for building community and making space for participants to become creatively energetic in the way they perceive future goal/wish/challenges. The development and implementation of this curriculum and the positive feedback from group members confirmed that this program can be a valuable offering for small businesses to experience

    Bridging Alchemy the History of Science and Popular Culture in Museums

    The only decentralized trade which carries the ember of the metallurgic narrative is that of the alchemist. Alchemy survived the ancient and medieval periods, adding to the character of intellectualism, art, history, culture, philosophy, and economics. This eventually led to the more formal field of chemistry, similar to astrology as a catalyst to forming astronomy. As scientific practices and theories continue to clash with traditional views in modern times, it is of value to view alchemy by observing how people balanced beliefs, fascinations, concepts, and inadvertent discoveries in science. This thesis proposes to tell the story of alchemy as a precursor to chemistry through a museum exhibit. Alchemy was a field that was a less specialized practice than today’s science, and can be considered an interdisciplinary expertise. A combination of mysticism, experimentation, literature, and mixing over the cauldron reveals the lost practice as bridge from the imaginations of natural philosophy to the scientific method

Everyone Needs a Hero: Why Can’t it be You? is a course designed to help people transform their lifestyle and unlock the amazing person they’re meant to be. This paper will be an outline of the steps to sell the course. The basis of unlocking the inner-hero is character development. Whether it be family, business, socially it contributes to our entire world. Tying to each person’s self-esteem, it can evoke self-actualization and propel many to eminence. Everyday is training day.     My Master’s project is focused on the development of a virtual music festival geared towards giving exposure to local musicians in the Buffalo Area. Buffalo has an immense pool of talented musicians across various genres along with an avid passion for music which is present in nearly every aspect of the city\u27s culture. This depth of talent would allow for a virtual music festival for the citizens of Buffalo where they can be introduced to artists of various genres and cultures creating a sense of unity and a break from the current struggles of the pandemic.     Analyzing Instruction in Mathematics via Teaching for Robust Understanding

    The NSF-funded AIM-TRU project involves studying Professional Learning Communities as a mechanism for supporting teachers engaged in deepening their content knowledge and refining their instructional practice. The presentation will describe the professional development model (learning cycle) that is at the center of our Professional Learning Community’s work. The PLCs meet monthly to explore the OER Formative Assessment Lessons (FALs) using the Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) framework as a lens for their study (map.mathshell.org). Video case studies provide opportunities for teachers to study episodes of student\u27s reasoning and communication that took place while completing FALs. (tle.soe.umich.edu/MFA/) Discussion structures based on the TRU dimensions support enhanced content and pedagogical knowledge. The work shared in this presentation is based on a multiyear partnership between Math for America, SUNY Buffalo State, Montclair State University and DePaul University. The project both creates video case studies of select FALs and uses those video cases to prompt reflections on practice based on the dimensions of the TRU framework (Schoenfeld, 2016). Our research focus is on teacher learning within the community (Wenger, 1998) and how the reflection and analysis structured along the five dimensions of TRU fosters deep mathematical conversations and pedagogical insight. Early findings from professional learning communities in Chicago, New York City and Buffalo provide support for the learning cycle being an effective tool for professional development within the mathematics teacher community.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/fsrcf_nss/1007/thumbnail.jp

    Creativity in Podcasting

    This master’s project is the creation of a podcast using elements and tools of creativity in not only the overall creation, but the foundation of individual episodes. Torrance Incubation Model, 20 Creativity tools of Cyndi Burnett, and other creativity tools will be used to enhance the efficacy of the podcasts. The podcast will be aimed at young adults 20 – 30 years of age. Using humor, the podcast will feature regulars and guest speakers specializing in various topics that will enhance the life skills of those listening. A website will provide information on upcoming episodes, guest speakers, archives, and resources to further learning. The Resources will include blog posts, links to websites, videos, and other podcasts, and additional materials to download

    The Potential of GIS to Visualize and Map Sewage Discharge Reports

    Alexander Krest, GEG525: Fundamentals of GISFaculty Mentor(s): Professor Tao Tang, Geography and Planning Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) are detrimental events that at times release hundreds of millions of gallons of untreated and partially treated sewage per month into WNY waterways. These discharges pose a multi-dimensional threat, impacting local economies, regional ecology, and public health, among other things. Unfortunately, despite a couple highly publicized events, there is still a lack of attention paid to this issue. In 2013, New York State passed Assembly Bill A10585A, more commonly known as the Sewage Pollution Right to Know Act, which requires publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities to report discharges of untreated or partially treated sewage to the DEC. While this legislation is a step in the right direction, the sheer number of incidences, coupled with varied reporting strategies and messy database configuration make the prospects of working with this data quite intimidating, especially for those not accustomed to the field. Looking at sewage discharge reports for Erie County for the month of September 2019, this project aimed to gauge the potential of displaying this data through GIS applications for public, municipal, and scientific consumption. The results of this undertaking produced a map that--while relatively easily understandable when compared to the traditional Excel format in which the data is often presented--was limited in the scope of true representation of sewage discharges.     Dance and Design

    Salvatore Giangreco-Marotta, ALT490: Senior SeminarFaculty Mentor(s): Professor Joy Guarino, Theater, Professor Naila Ansari, Theater The focus of the Dance and Design project was to develop a personal choreographic process by consciously incorporating elements of design into the dance composition, resulting in the strengthening of the themes and ideas of dance pieces. Dance and design share many overlapping ideas because they are both forms of communication. I initially wanted to see if applying design elements to dance composition would translate between the two art forms. I researched elements of choreography and design. I then simultaneously incorporated the design elements in the choreographic process and created a presentation that symbolized both the design elements and the respective dance piece. The principles of design applied were Proximity, Color, Contrast, Typography, Repetition, Alignment, Hierarchy, Emphasis, White Space, and Balance. Some of the elements are already considered when choreographing, while the others influence and strengthen choices in choreography. During my junior year, a graphic design class inspired me to see similarities between dance and design. Dance and design have always been connected. Partnerships like the one between choreographer Martha Graham and designer Isamu Noguchi is a great example of how design elements can influence dance. I have found some choreographers who also explore the connection between dance and graphic design, but not in the way I have done.     David Figueroa, ENT422: Machine Design IIFaculty Mentor(s): Professor Jikai Du, Engineering Technology Baja SAE® (Society of Automotive Engineers), which began in 1976, sponsors annual competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are tasked with designing and building an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. Each team\u27s goal is to design and build a single-seat, all-terrain, sporting vehicle whose structure contains the driver. SUNY-Buffalo State College has been competing in the Baja SAE for over 20 years, finding new concepts to make our new vehicle better each year. This year\u27s competition has currently undergone an alternative format because of Covid-19. This alternative split the competition into two separate competitions: (1) Baja SAE Knowledge Event (completely virtual), and (2) Baja SAE Validation Event (virtual & in-person). Due to SUNY\u27s Covid-19 policy, we are only taking part in the Knowledge Event, for which we have transformed our vehicle design from a RWD to a 4WD. Our vehicle\u27s 10HP engine powers our Gearbox, which provides speed and torque conversions to the Front and Rear differential to activate all 4 wheels with the support of a Driveshaft. The Driveshaft in between the Gearbox and Front differential has a component known as a Switch-Out, similar to a Transfer case but much lighter.     The role museums have in society is an ever-changing one. As institutions of knowledge, culture, and humanity, they are subject to the same evolutions as the people they represent, educate, and serve. Thus, as digitization movements have swept the world, efforts to bring museums into the digital age have increased. This paper discusses digitization in the museum context, addresses the digitization of collections and exhibitions, and examines how digitization tools open those resources for public access – in particular for people with disabilities. The aim of this topic is to demonstrate how said digitization can best be utilized for the benefit of both the institution and the public they serve
